Double Trouble at 40k Quebec City Open

shadowsword

Tales from the Quebec City Open! Five games of doubles, lots of pictures and tons of fun! Come check out this event’s winners!

As I write this, the the first edition of the Quebec City Open is just over, and it looks promising for next year!

Now I was running the tournament, so I don’t really have a tale to tell like I usually do, however I did keep a close look at table 1 because it was the closest to the judge’s booth where I spent my time. Unlike some other tournaments, the game on table 1 is not always the strongest seed. This is to prevent teams from playing on the same table all day.

The format of the tournament is a doubles, with each player of a team fielding 1000 points, with very little comp rules. We were also using straight up GW rules with the draft FAQs and erratas.

Here’s table 1 in all it’s glory. Everything from the mat to the terrain are 1) from gamemat.eu and 2) awesome.

Game 1 : Renegade Artilley vs Tau/Eldar

A bunch of carriage and expandable zombies paired with FMCs of the Tzeench variety, facing Jetbikes and Warpspiders, paired with a 5-suit stong Riptide wing. There were 3 teams of this almost identical build of Tau/Eldar/Cancer, and it’s quite good.

Not a lot of pictures from this game as there was a whole lot to do organization wise.  Despite getting pummeled by artillery for the better part of 4 turns, the Tau/Dar came out on top with a minor win.  They will later go on to claim best Generals for the tournament.

Game 2:  Eldar vs Eldar/Space Marines

Quebec City1 2

Round 2 features some heavy hitters, having both maxed out on game one.  The Eldar list takes the “no comp” policy to the limit, fielding a Sonic Lance Lynx, 2 Warp Hunters, and a Culexus in a bunker.  The Eldar/Space Marines list is a little bit more out of the box, but still features the classic bikes and Wraithknight , while the Space Marines fields Centurions and some Grey Knights Nemesis Dreadknights.

The Eldar-only team proceeded to wreck the bunker on turn one, and snowballed from there to get another 25-0 victory.

Game 3: Orks vs Chaos

Quebec City

Round 3 is one of the most photographed because it features 2 teams sitting at a 1-1 reccord.  The Orks list includes Stompa and Nobs, pretty standard list. The Chaos list is one of the nicest builds out there, featuring a Cyclopean Cabal, Kharn, a Hound Star and some Nurglings to electro-displace with the star.

Because there was no time limit on that round as it was the last one of the day, these guys played for roughly 4 hours, screaming and laughing all the way through.  The Chaos team will later go on to win best Painted for the event.

Game 4: Eldar/Tau ( another one! )  vs.  Imperial Guard/Tyranids

Quebec City

Not a lot of pictures of this game, as again, there was a lot to do to get other tournament going.  The Nids and Imperial Guard were getting back into the game after not playing a lot, and they went hipster on the Genestealer Cult army, playing IG and Nids before it was cool.   As cool as it was, it was no match for the Eldar and Riptides who destroyed them.

Game 5: Eldars vs Renegade Artillery.

Quebec City

These two teams were already featured, this was the true finals of the event.  Team Canhammer, playing Eldar, needed only 3 points in the game to secure Best Generals.  The Renegades only suffered a minor loss in their first round and were looking at Best Generals also, if they could stop the yet undefeated Eldar.

Sadly for the Renegades and Daemons team, the Eldar were not about to be stopped.  The Sonic Lance did the lord’s work on the Infantry and extinguished all hopes of the Chaos Forces to claim a prize.

And just because I truly think they’re awesome, here are some other gamemat.eu mats we got for the X-Wing event!
