Today we’re taking a look at the new Phoenix Home Expansion for Star Wars Armada. This one is going full frontal!
The new Phoenix Home preview is here from Fantasy Flight Games. Checkout my thoughts and plans for the Rebel’s latest heavy hitter.
As the Rebel fleet was growing in strength, it owed much of its success to the efforts of Commander Jun Sato and his modified Pelta-class ship, Phoenix Home, both of which arrive to Star Wars™: Armada in the Phoenix Home Expansion Pack.
There’s a lot of new upgrades that are going to catch a lot of Imperial players completely off guard. I think the Rebel players are already caught off guard with the Rebel’s new version of the Gladiator.
Sato doesn’t allow you to fire at a ship that you can’t already attack. You still need to be able to form an attack pool, which means you need dice of an appropriate range. What Sato does is allow you to replace your long-range red dice with more accurate blue dice or with more potent black dice.
First and foremost, let’s get the main talking point covered. Commander Sato… Need I say more?
Equivalent to the firepower and upgrades as the Gladiator-II Class Star Destroyer, the Modified Pelta-Class Command Ship. The Command Ship is going to be a nice support vessel with mid range firepower, but Sato is what will make this ship a game changer at close and long range.
In my personal opinion, this is the Rebel’s comeback for the Gladiator. Like a lot of Rebel ships, the Phoenix Home has a hard hitting front arc. Throw 2 reds and 2 blacks, with the option to switch out 2 reds for 2 blacks. That would be 2 black dice at medium-long range, or 4 black dice at close range, what else can you asked for? A wider front arc? You have that already…
I think we can all agree on this, the new upgrades goes as follows: You have to trash these cards, or spend the according token to give everyone else some kind of perk. But let’s look at the points… With the exception of Entrapment Formation, where every ship gets to change their speed by 1 during its Determine Course step, I do not see myself spending 5 or 6 points on a shield, or get +1 to my squadron activations.
All in all I think this is going to be a perfect new ship for the Rebels. They’ve taken the Gladiator idea, gave it that nice Rebel twist, one upped the dice rule manipulations, and came back swinging so the others can escape.
Thanks for reading, I would love to hear your opinions on the new Phoenix Home. Do you agree? Disagree? Leave it in the comments below.
