It’s official, Fantasy Flight Games has announced a miniatures game of infantry combat battles in the Star Wars galaxy!
Star Wars Legion is coming in early 2018, but for now we have this teaser from FFG. This game looks to be very different from the existing Imperial Assault, and a direct competitor all other tabletop games.
If you are lucky enough to be at GenCon this weekend, you will get a taste of Star Wars: Legion at the Fantasy Flight Games booth. For the rest of us, we will have to be content with the juicy teasers in this announcement.
Star Wars: Legion is a miniatures game of infantry battles that will have players leading iconic heroes and troopers into battle for the fate of the Star Wars galaxy. You will be able to build and paint a unique army of miniatures and command them in battle. The Core Set will contain 33 unpainted miniatures, cards, tokens, movement tools, and terrain that you need to get started.
Each match will have objectives that you, as a commander, will have to achieve to crush the Rebellion or free the galaxy from the clutches of the Empire. Heroes, troopers, and vehicles will form the heart of your forces. You will be commanding anything from a Stormtrooper squad to a salvaged Rebel AT-RT. All units can take 2 actions to march across the battlefield, begin an attack, steady their aim, dodge incoming enemy fire, recover, or hold for the right moment to act. Movement is fast and organic and utilizes a jointed movement tool. You will not have to measure distance for every mini as you simply need to measure distance for the unit leader then pick up the other soldiers in the unit and place them in cohesion with the unit leader. This makes movement fast and intuitive, with the added bonus of being able to position your troops to take cover or seize strategic positions.
Combat in Star Wars: Legion is driven by the weapons each soldier wields. For every attack, you will choose the weapons you want your soldiers to use as you adapt to an ever evolving battle. Every unit you control on the battlefield will activate every round and the command system will allow you to outmaneuver and confound opponents.
The Core Set contains 33 miniatures consisting of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Rebel Troopers, Stormtroopers, an AT-RT, and 74-Z Speederbikes. More options will become available to expand and custom an army that fits your play style. Whether that is a hit and run force, a swarm mass of troopers, or vehicle force with improved, Star Wars: Legion will let you build an army that fits they way you want to play.
The customization doesn’t stop there. Every unit has the capability of being tweaked with upgrade cards. You can have Darth Vader throw his light saber; your trooper unit can take bring a heavy weapon specialist; or you speeders can have long-range comlinks. The final step in customizing your Star Wars: Legion army is painting your miniatures. Fantasy Flight Games will be releasing articles and video tutorials to support your painting in the coming months.
