It’s almost time for the release of Codex: Death Guard and today we’re going to be taking a look at everything we know about it so far.
Just days away from the release, people are starting to get anxious about the new Death Guard codex. We’ve put out previews of everything we know so far over the weekend, and today we’re going to go over it all.
First up, the upcoming new releases:
- Codex: Death Guard $40
- Codex: Death Guard (Limited Edition/Webstore Exclusive) $80
- Datacards: Death Guard $15
- Mortarion, Daemon Primarch of Nurgle $140
- The Plague Brethren (Webstore Exclusive) $40
- Death Guard Dice $20
Going up for pre-order this week we’re only seeing one new item for the Death Guard. The Deathshroud Terminators will be hitting shelves on September 23rd.
- Deathshroud Terminators $60
And now, for all the specifics on the main man himself, Mortarion.
He’s going to be 470 points with a Power Level cost of 24.
We got a preview of his stats and list weapons in one of the latest Games Workshop teasers. But, what we didn’t get was the weapon details and what they do.
His fabled sidearm Lantern has an 18″ range, Pistol 1, Strength 8, AP-3, 3 Damage. Ability: pick a model, draw a line from Mortarion’s base to your target, and every unit on the line between them are hit by the attack.
Silence is a Plague Weapon: When attacking with this weapon choose one of the profiles below:
- Reaping Scythe Strength User, AP -2, 1 Damage. Make 3 attacks for this weapon.
- Eviscerating Blow 6 Attacks, Strength x2, AP -4, D6 Damage.
His Nurglings also get to attack with Strength 2, AP 0, 1 Damage, and they are a Plague Weapon. Additionally you do D6 additional attacks for this weapon.
Phosphex Bombs have a 6″ range, Grenade 2D6, Strength 5, AP -1, 1 Damage.
Mortarion has the following abilities:
- Death To the False Emperor
- Disgustingly Resilient
- Primarch of the Death Guard: Re-roll failed hit rolls of 1 for all friendly Death Guard Units within 7″.
- Mortarion has a 4+ Invulnerable Save.
- Fly, Daemon of Nurgle
- Putrid Demise: Roll a dice before removing the model from the battlefield, on a 4+ Mortarion explodes, each unit within 7″ suffers D3 mortal wounds unless they’re Nurgle.
Mortarion is a Psyker. He can choose three powers from the Contagion Discipline, he knows three powers in addition to smite, he can cast two, and attempt to deny three.
Mortarion almost seems like a requirement for any Death Guard list that can focus on a host of overlapping mortal wounding abilities, and resistances all anchored by the Lord of Plagues himself. Plus re-rolling plague weapons wounds for free and having access to a stratagem that can get you +1 to wounds is pretty powerful as well.
But what good would Mortarion be without his personal bodyguards?
Deathshroud Terminators are 50 points a model. Each unit consits of 3 models, and each model is equipped with a Plaguespurt Gauntlet (8pts) and a Manreaper (17pts). They are Strength 5, Toughness 5, 2 Wounds, 3 Attacks, the Deathsroud Champion gets 4 Attacks, 2+ Save, and a 4+ Invulnerable Save. You must half dice results when determining how far they advance, but they do have the Teleport Strike ability to help you get them into battle faster.
The Plaguespurt Gauntlet is a plague weapon that automatically hits its target with Strength 3, AP 0, and does D6 Damage. Their Manreaper is Strength +3, -3 AP, does D3 Damage, and it’s a plague weapon.
They also have the ability to have wounds allocated to them from friendly Death Guard with 7″ on a 2+, and give out a +1 attacks bonus to friendlies as well.
Mortarion and the Deathshroud Terminators may be what everyone is talking about but they’re not the only new units we’re seeing coming out for the Death Guard.
Tallyman is a single model unit that costs 60 points, moves 5″, BS/WS 5, Strength 4, Toughness 5, 4 Wounds, 3 Attacks, Leadership 8, and has a 3+ Save. This model is equipped with a Plasma Pistol, Blight Grenades, and Krak Grenades. Festering Zealot is an ability that allows friendly Death Guard units within 7″ to re-roll failed hit rolls.
Seven Fold Chant lets you roll 2D6 every time you use a Stratagem, on a roll of a 7 you get the Command Points back.
The Foul Blightspawn is a single model unit that costs 77 points, moves 5″, WS/BS 3+, Strength 4, Toughness 5, 3 Attacks, 4 wounds, Leadership 8, 3+ save.
This unit is equipped Plaguesprayer which has a 9″ range, D6 Attacks, 2D6 Strength, AP -3, 3 Damage, and it’s Plague Weapon.
The Bilogus Putrifier is a single model unit costing 74 pts. It has Movement 5″, WS/BS 3+, Strength 4, Toughness 5, 4 Wounds, 3 Attacks, Leadership 8, and a 3+ Save.
The Plague Surgeon is a single model unit. It comes equipped with a Bolt Pistol, Bale Sword, Blight Grenades, and Krak Grenades., and allows you to re-roll 1’s for you disgusting resilient saves.
Blightlord Terminators are 38 points a model, wargear not included, and there’s five models in a unit. They can be quipped with a Blight Launcher which has a 24″ range, Assault 2, S6, AP -2, D3, Plague Weapon. They also have access to the Plague Spewer, Bale Sword, and Bubonic Axe.
The Foetid Bloat-Drone is not changing much, with it’s power dropping from 10 to 8. But it is getting access to two new weapon options, the fleshmower and the heavy blight launcher.
The fleshmower is a plague weapon with Strength +2, AP -2, does 2 Damage, and each time a Foetid Bloat Drone fights it can make 6 additional attacks with this weapon.
- Foul stench: Enemy units must subtract 1 from hit rolls when targeting this model in the fight phase.
- Putrescent Fog: Friendly Death Guard Infantry units that are entirely within 7″ gain the benefit of cover when making armor saves rolls.
