Tom Hardy presents himself at his Tom Hardy-est in the new trailer from Sony Motion Pictures for the upcoming anti-hero film, Venom.

Finally, we’re presented, after much teasing, discussion, mountains of interviews and behind-the-scenes, with our first look into Venom. With Sony having been kept fairly tight-shut about any details of story and plot, not to mention footage, the secrecy continues on with this new bit of footage. Not too much is shown, especially the titular character. But, we do get to see plenty of action, mystery, and a locked-up alien symbiote. Alongside this, is a biohazard team investigating what seems to be mysterious structure. Perhaps a crashed space station or ship, which could probably explain the alien goop’s origin.

As for Tom Hardy’s character, Eddie Brock, we can see him in what we can assume to be down on his luck, perhaps trying to keep his head low. Our previous info of the story following the ‘Lethal Protector’ storyline seems to ring true, with confirmation of it taking place in San Fransisco. With the added rumors that there will be no spider-man, however, it’s hard to tell how the story will flesh out.

Originally, the story follows Eddie making a deal with Spider-man that they’ll keep out of eachother’s web on the condition that he commit no crimes. Moving to San Francisco to escape his problems, his luck takes a dive and he’s attacked by a group of super-powered mercs. Spider-man comes to confront him about it, and they instead team up to face off against new symbiote-clad enemies, Venom’s offspring.

Many elements seem to be missing here with the lack of Spidey, especially with how Venom will come to be. Perhaps the alter-ego will form natural after Eddie’s contact with the Symbiote.

We can only speculate at this point, but the hype is building steadilly with the secrecy of Venom’s design, and most of the cast being also kept highly secret. Woody Harrelson for example, has been confirmed to be taking part in the film, but with no publicly-stated role. We have our fingers crossed, however, that he could be playing Cletus Kasady, a psychotic murderer who came into contact with one of Venom’s offspring and became the villain known as Carnage. It’d certainly make for a fantastic antagonist! We can only wait with baited breath for its release on October the 5th, 2018.

What are your speculations on the story? Was it a wise decision to not show Venom himself in the trailer?
