Forge World FAQ: Atrapos New King of the Knights?

atrapos

Are the Dominus Class still the king of the Knights after the Atropos got an FAQ update from Forge World? Let’s compare the two to find out.

The Dominus-class Knights raised the bar for damage output and survivability compared to older models of Knights. Yes, they’re more expensive but at 28 wounds, class-exclusive weapons, and a brand new codex to back them up, they’re almost at the top of the food chain.

Now that it is on par keyword and stratagem wise post Knight FAQ,  the Forge World Atrapos just seems to do a little bit better in almost every category than the Dominus.

Dominus-Class Knights

knight Valiant

Knight valiant

Taking a look at the Knight Valiant, it’s a bit of a monster at T8 and 28W. It can do a flat 10 damage +D3 mortal wounds with only one gun and completely hose anything down in holy promethium with the other. We can’t forget the 5++ against shooting either. There’s absolutely no argument that this is a strong unit, from close in Valiants to even their standoff Castellan brothers.

The Valiant even has access to relics and stratagems from a new codex. But is it the strongest?

It totals up to be 583 points. (Almost the same as a Knight Crusader before the Imperial Knight codex came out).

Cerastus-Class Atropos

Atrapos

Are the Dominus Class still the king of the Knights after the Atropos got an FAQ update from Forge World? Let's compare the two to find out.

The Cerastus is a Knight hunter. The model has two ranged guns with one that doubles as an insane melee weapon. It’s like having a Reaper Chainsword that shoots other Reaper Chainswords. On top of that, it can possibly heal a wound every turn and has a 4++ against shooting and a 5++ against melee. The best part about this is that you can rotate ion shields for 1CP to give it a 3++. Now consider this, it costs 3CP for the Dominus-class Knights to rotate their shields and that only goes to a 4++.

On top of having survivability, the Atropos can advance 2D6, and if you are House raven still shoot etc. Add in the Landstrider Warlord trait for fun and you can advance and assault an extra 2″, making your overall threat range in one turn over 30″.  Keep in mind though you have to make any of the FW knights your warlord to get a trait, you can not play the Court Stratagem to give them one, as it is locked to the Knight Codex specific classes still.

The only real “edge” that the Dominus-class has over the Atropos is that it has 1 more wound (But that’s literally meaningless in Knight-on Knight combat) and a little bit more dakka from the Siegebreaker cannons, Shieldbreaker missiles, and meltas- if it gets to shoot them.

The Atropos totals up to be 555 points. This is still cheaper than the Dominus and gives the player more options. However, It does lack the Infantry/Elite melting capability that the Valiant with the Flamer has.

Ultimately, The Dominus Valiant and Cerastus Atropos are both beasts on the tabletop. They can both lay waste to almost anything in their path. But being that the Atropos is a Forge World staple and geared toward Knight hunting, it looks like the Atropos is still at the top of the food chain for Knights. (We aren’t considering Warhounds, Imperator-class titans, etc.)

What do you think about these two Knights? Have you played both of these in 8th edition? What was your experience? Let us know in the comments on our Facebook Hobby Group.
