Chaos is getting a load of psychic support coming from the Shadowspear Daemonkin mini codex. Check out what they’ll be manifesting in the psychic phase!
Spotted on Reddit, Chaos is getting a handful of new psychic abilities. How will they compare to the classic Chaos powers? Let’s break down the new powers and see how they match up to the classics!
Malefic Psychic Discipline
- Incursion (WC 7): The Psyker can attempt to summon Daemons in the psychic phase. He also gets to roll four dice instead of three and doesn’t suffer any mortal wounds as a result of doubles on the dice.
- Sacrifice (WC 4): Pick a model within 2″ of the Psyker. That model suffers a mortal wound. Any Legion Daemon/ Daemon Engine model within 18″ of the Psyker heals D3 wounds. If the model that suffered the mortal wound was a Warpsmith, your Daemon Engine heals three lost wounds.
- Mutated Invigoration (WC 7): This one is a little weird. You can pick a Chaos Spawn, Possessed, or Cult of Destruction unit within 18″ of the Psyker. Depending on what unit you picked gives them a different bonus.
- Reroll dice when rolling a Chaos Spawn’s Mutated Beyond Reason ability.
- You can reroll the dice when rolling for the attacks characteristic for a unit of Possessed and their Writhing Tentacles.
- You can reroll one dice when rolling for strength, AP, and damage of a Cult of Destruction unit’s weapons and it’s fleshmetal guns/fleshmetal weapons ability.
- Possession (WC 5): Your Psyker becomes a focal point of destruction! Your Psyker’s AP is improved by +2 and if he kills a character, you can add a Chaos Spawn to your army. If he kills an Adeptus Astartes/Heretic Astartes, you can add a Greater Chaos Spawn to your army. If he manages to kill a vehicle with the explode ability, it automatically explodes and the Psyker ignores the mortal wounds.
- Cursed Earth (WC 7): Until your next Psychic phase, friendly Legion Daemons have their invulnerable save improved by +1 (to a max of a 3+) while they are within 6″ of the Psyker.
- Infernal Power (WC 6): Your Psyker basically becomes a Captain and Lieutenant all in one Psychic power. You can reroll hit and wound rolls of 1 for Legion Daemons while they are within 6″ of the Psyker.
How Do They Stack up to the Classic Chaos Powers?
For starters, we think that Warp Time and Death Hex will always have a place in the Chaos faction. Being able to move in the Psychic phase and completely get rid of an invuln save (Get out of here 3++ Castellan) is too good. These spells, while powerful, are tailored mainly to a Legion Daemon keyworded army. There’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re not a player that is planning on doubling down on Daemon Engines, these psychic powers may not be too great of use for you.
Summoning may be played around with again thanks to the bonus that Incursion gives you. Plus, it’s always fun to imagine your Psyker running through enemies with Possession. But at the end of the day, if you’re not running a bunch of Daemonkin, you’ll probably just rather take the classic Warp Time/ Death Hex combo.
