How To Counter The New Indomitus 40k Necrons

Indomitus Skorpekh Destroyers 2We’re about to see a bunch of Necrons on the table in the next few months, so if you’re wondering how to counter them, here are some suggestions.

Necrons have a bunch of new models on the way. For the most part, we haven’t even seen the rules for all the new things beyond the Indomitus Box. But from what we have seen, here are some solid ways to counter pick them on the table.

Countering The New 40k Necrons

necron skorpekh destoryer 2

skorpekh destroyers datasheetLet’s take a look at the Skorpekh Destroyers. They’re T5 with three wounds and are surprisingly quick at an 8″ movement. They slap in melee but have no interaction in the Shooting Phase at all and have no invuln save. That makes them a prime target for some long-range firepower.

knights helverinsThe Helverins are an outstanding choice for these guys. They have 60″ range guns which is more than enough to stay out of reach from these guys. For every unsaved wound the Skorpekh Destroyers take, it’ll be a dead model. The weakest part about the guns on the Helverins is that they only have -1 AP, but a 4+ Sv on a unit of three models is still pretty good odds at wiping a couple out. Especially when you consider that a single Helverin has 4D3 shots. On that note, even though the Skorpekh Destroyers are going to be a bit tankier against small-arms fire (being T5), the cannons on the Helverins won’t care and will still be wounding on 3’s.

Necron Warriors white

necron warrior datasheetWarriors got a model makeover, looking way better without that weird green LEGO-style plastic rod on their weapons. They also got a new wargear option being a S5 -2AP profile. Although they trade A LOT of range over the Gauss Flayer counterpart. But for these guys, we have to look at the new varying shot rule for Blast weapons against hordes in 9th Edition. 9th edition blast weaponBecause you get the most value out of a 20-man Warrior blob (i.e it’s easier to reanimate, harder for your opponent to get a kill point, and harder to lose models from morale in 9th) these guys may be a great target for Blast weapons.

mortars

wyvernMortars are going to outstanding not just for Necrons, but for any horde. They are considered a Blast weapon and you’ve got two ways of going about this. You can take three squads of three Heavy Weapons Teams for the Imperial Guard as an affordable method. Or, you can take a couple of Wyverns and also reroll failed wound rolls for the weapon. If you point a single Wyvern at a full-strength Warrior squad, that’ll be a guaranteed 24 S4 shots rerolling wounds that don’t need LOS.

If you’re a Necron player and you’re reading this, you may want to consider something other than footslogging it up the board.

Iyanden GuardiansAnother great option may be some Guardian Defender delete blobs. Since anything can go into Strategic Reserves for the right amount of CP, Guardian Defenders being used as a reactionary unit may be very popular. These guys are cheap T3 bodies that have a 12″ Assault 3 S4 gun that has -3 AP on a wound of 6+. If a player keeps these in reserves and brings them down on a Warrior squad that got too close to a table edge, the Warriors may not even get a save if the Eldar player rolls hot. The chief thing to watch for is a Cryptek standing closeby. That 5++ invuln aura is a real “gotcha”.

Hopefully, this has given you some ideas to play around with before your next game against Necrons in 9th Edition. It’s safe to say that we’re about to see a lot of new Xenos and Primaris units on the board and if you didn’t get an Indomitus box, you can at least be prepared to counter them!
