AoS Shadow & Pain Review: Daughters of Khaine

morathi coverJoin us as we start our AoS Shadow and Pain Review! Today we’ll be taking a look at the Daughters of Khaine but we won’t forget about Slaanesh!

There is a new Sigmar starter box hitting the shelves in time for the holiday season, called Shadow and Pain. It features Daughters of Khane vs Slaanesh and is coming out right around Broken Realms: Morathi. We are going to break down each side first, to see if the value is there for the respective allegiance and then build it up to 2000 points as cheaply as possible. If you’re just getting into either faction, this will help you decide how to get to a full army for cheap (comparatively). This week, let’s kick things off with the Daughters of Khaine.

AoS Shadow & Pain Review: Daughters of Khaine

Shadow and Pain

The cost for the box is $170

Here is what comes in the box: (I am choosing to make two units of 5 Melusai Blood Sisters rather than Stalkers)

  • Melusai Ironscale (Guessing $35) (Guessing 140 points)
  • 5 Melusai Blood Sisters ($54): 140 Points
  • 5 Melusai Blood Sisters ($54): 140 Points
  • Five Khinerai Lifetakers ($53): 90 Points
  • Total: 510 Points ($196)

So, in terms of value for money, if you were to split this with someone, you’re getting about 25% of a force for $85. The savings are solid if you were to buy these pieces individually. If I were getting into Daughters of Khaine I would certainly look to split this box with someone (or two) in order to start an army.

Building to 2000

Let’s build onto these forces though and get them to 2000 points. Starting with the Daughters of Khaine. This is going to be a Melusai focused army because that is what the starter is pushing you towards, which might not be the most competitive, but we will see what the new book is going to bring to the table. It also makes it the cheapest, as we can build out this army using the start collecting boxes. So let’s first add a box and build it that way.

Daughters of Khaine

  • 5 Melusai Blood Sisters:140 Points: Battleline 1 of 3
  • 1 Bloodwrack Shrine: 210 Points: Leader 1 of 6
  • Hag Queen: 100 Points: Leader 2 of 6
  • 1 Slaughter Queen: (Not Going to use)
  • 1 Avatar of Khaine: 140 Points Behemoth 1 of 3

Add the models from your starter set:

  • Melusai Ironscale: (Guessing 140 Points) Leader 3 of 6
  • 10 Melusai Blood Sisters: 280 Points: going to be part of a massive unit
  • 5 Khinerai Lifetakers: 90 Points

Brings your total to 1100 Points. The best thing to do with this snake focused army is, you guessed it, another start collecting box.

  • 5 Melusai Blood Sisters (bringing your total to 20 to get a massive unit discount): 480 Points: Battleline 1 of 3
  • 1 Bloodwrack Shrine: 210 Points: Leader 4 of 6
  • 1 Hag Queen: 100 Points: Leader 5 of 6
  • Slaughter Queen: 100 Points: leader 6 of 6
  • 1 Avatar of Khaine: 140 Points: Behemoth 2 of 3

Daughters of Khaine

The Last Few Points

So you are now at 1710 points and you have your leader slots full and you need to fill out two more battleline units. For this, you will need two more boxes of Blood Sisters at 54$ a pop, but it will take your army to 1990 points and meet the battleline requirements.

  • 5 Melusai Blood Sisters: 140 Points: Battleline 2 of 3
  • 5 Melusai Blood Sisters: 140 Points: Battleline 3 of 3

Total 1990 Points.

To be honest this is a very snake-oriented army that probably will not win much with traditional Daughters of Khaine rules but in the new Morarthi book they might have some bite. (see what I did there…). The best thing to do would be to get two of the starter set to split with someone as you would be getting fantastic value for money on the Blood Sisters and the new Melusai hero. But that is not always an option due to finding someone to split this with as well as the demand that comes for these boxes.

There you have it a somewhat affordable Daughters of Khaine army which depending on the new rules could be competitive without Aelves! We will have to see how it all plays out though, next week we are going to build off the Slaanesh side of things from the Shadow and Pain box set!
