Age of Sigmar 3.0 Previous Rumors
Way back when Warhammer Community announced that a Morathi supplement book was on the way, they had this to say:
The Realmgate Wars. Malign Portents. The Soul Wars. Wrath of the Everchosen. The vast, ongoing story of the Mortal Realms has encompassed many great events. To break it down, the Stormcast Eternals ushered in the Age of Sigmar, driving back the hordes of Chaos and allowing civilisation to return to the realms in the form of great cities. Nagash raised hordes of the dead to claim the realms for himself, ancient Stormvaults full of long-buried secrets were opened, and most recently, Chaos and Death have been knocking chunks out of one another in the Eightpoints.
Now it’s time for the next chapter, a narrative event that will define the future of the Age of Sigmar. Broken Realms is here.
All of the story arcs named red above ushered in new editions of the game (including the 2016 General’s handbook which I guess you could consider a 1.5 patch to the game too…)
In the same way that we saw new model kits, then supplements, then a new Edition in BOTH 40k and AoS (Malign Portents, then Soul Wars for 2.0), we could be in the “supplement lead up” phase for Age of Sigmar 3.0 shortly.
It’s also worth noting that Age of Sigmar (titled AoS 2.0) was also released back in 2018. As we have a few months to take us into 2021, but then we will be right around the 3-year mark from 2.0 (and SIX years from 1.o), putting us in a great spot to see a new edition of Age of Sigmar.
Now with Broken Realms starting to wrap up, and Kragnos assumed to be the last one, AoS 3.0 might come right after!
Spoiler alert: it looks like that was the case!
In the meantime, we know you have a lot of questions, so we convinced Jes, Phil, and Ben of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Studio team to share their thoughts about creating the new edition.
First things first there are a few things worth pointing out from the video:
- There is still a double turn.
- Chosing to go second gets you more CPs, meaning there is more strategy involved in going first or second.
- Warscroll battalions are changing a bit, the mentioned Core Battalions have solid benefits.
- Command points will interact with different abilities during a phase for less downtime in the phase, making the game more engaging from start to finish.
Another huge point is that the new CORE rules for AoS 3.0 will have no room for ambiguity or interpretation and are more watertight than previous editions. This might lead to a more “competitive” AoS than previously, but it will be up to the player base. While it’s normal for people to be excited about finishing their projects, the AoS team, was very vocal claiming “This is the best edition of AoS yet”. We will just have to wait and see if the community agrees when it comes out!
During the stream, there was also mention of a new 3.0 starter box, but there were no hints at contents. We can assume Stormcast will be on thanks to their new releases already teased.
Something wicked this way comes indeed, but you’ll have to hold tight a little longer to learn more about this mysterious menace.
This final teaser is extremely mysterious and doesn’t really give too much away. There isn’t even any room for speculation other than it being something in the swamps of Ghur. They did however say that the newsletter they email out will have another hint at this mysterious teaser.
We got the newsletter and it looks like there are 14 new stories available to read for free that hint at who the new bad guys may be in this edition:
- The Clobbering
- Cursed Gift
- The Price of Treason
- Thicker Than Water
- In The Deep Dark Mountain
- The Hateful Stasis
- The Squint
- The Golden Son
- Dark Offerings
- Enlightenment
- The Path of Futility
- The Joust of Kings
- Marked for Death
- Sacrifice
