Another off-meta 40k army list emerged in the Maryland OPEN GT Tournament featuring the return of Necrons!
9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and just goes to show that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.
So Necrons Did Well At The 40k Maryland Open GT

Maryland OPEN GT: Steven Christopher- Necrons
The Chronomancers are one of the Crypteks variants but help a unit reroll charge rolls to get into melee. They also have the nice bonus of a unit of Cryptothralls that don’t take up an org slot and help keep the Chronomancers in play. The Lord helps models reroll 1s to hit and move slightly faster up the board when within 6″ of the character.
Troops see 55 Necron Warriors for a giant wall of metal bodies that can lay out a ton of shots over the course of the early turns. Not to mention that on the front end, they are relatively cheap at 13 pts per body.
Elites bring in extra Crytothralls which act as some extra protection for characters, plus some Flayed Ones for a bit of melee power, and 10 Lychguard for a more elite melee option.
Fast Attack sees 10 Canoptek Scarab Swarms join the fray, adding a whopping 40 wounds to the table for only 150 pts. While they don’t do much damage or have a great save, if you use them correctly they can really bind up some units worth way more than they are while the rest of the list can focus fire the bigger threats.
Finally, the return of Necrons is of course heralded by the Silent King himself! He is just as much a powerhouse as he was a few months ago. For 450 points, you get a giant suite of supportive buffs and abilities, all while being pretty good on his own when needed to lay down the hammer.
Steven went for a pretty standard Necron list that was popular early in the edition but fell out of favor for the last few months. He shows up and has proved that they still have the potential to be top tier, finishing 4-1 and 6th place overall at the massive event.
Even better they got great results from the player who piloted it! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.
