Top Homebrew 40k Army List: FLG Cherokee Open

40k-homebrew-army-listsAnother off-meta Warhammer 9th Edition 40k army list emerged in the FLG Cherokee Open, check this one out!

9th Edition’s meta is again in flux, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. This just goes to show us that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

However, we aren’t covering all those lists, instead, we will be looking at just one of our favorites this week.

FLG Cherokee Open: Steven Crawley – Thousand Sons

Steven Crawley tsons 1Steven’s Thousand Son’s list did fairly well at Cherokee Open and given the size of the event, there was a flood of “meta” lists there that he had to compete with.

He went for a two detachment set up with the first being a battalion led by Ahriman, an Exalted Sorcerer, and an Infernal Master. All three of which are great psykers. Ahriman is one of the best psykers in the game thanks to 3 casts and fully re-rollable tests. Additionally, he has a hit re-roll aura!

The Exalted Sorcerer on the other hand has two casts and another hit re-roll aura. The Infernal Master has one cast and access to the pacts system.  Troops keep it going with a total of 18 Rubric marines and two Soulreaper cannons, making for durable troops with pretty good firepower.

Closing out the battalion is a Sicaran Battle Tank with 2 Lascannons, making for a great ranged anti-armor threat that can also wipe the floor with 2 or even 3 wound models.

Steven Crawley tsons 2The second detachment is a patrol led by a second Exalted Sorcerer and a Daemon Prince. The Daemon Prince brings in a huge mobile melee threat that can be a serious problem if not dealt with. Troops bring in 6 more Rubric Marines, bringing the total to 24.

Elites close out the entire list with a 10 man squad of Occult Terminators. These are extremely durable models and thanks to their 2 Soulreaper Cannons, they can also lay down some serious hurt long range.

All-in-all this is a pretty standard list for Thousand Sons, but it’s nice to be reminded that they are still certainly viable in competitive settings if the general is good enough!
