Lil’ Legend Studio has a ton of great painting tutorials and they are always easy to follow and get your minis on the table with awesome quality.

This time around though, we’re focusing on getting your Horus Heresy minis ready for the tabletop! Now that the new edition is almost here, it’s time to get ready and your forces painted. Let’s jump into the tutorial!

How to Paint Horus Heresy Imperial Fists: Lil’ Legend Studio Tutorial

We’re going to go for a Grimdark yellow here that can be achieved by all skill levels! Let’s see how to do it.

Step 1:

To start, he sprays the model black and then does a zenithal highlight with Eclipse Grey and then does a further highlight with Graphite, both from Scale 75. Next, break out the Opaque White with a thinner and do a final highlight to develop the volume on all the armor from the top down.

Step 2:

Now, he starts on the yellow from the Scale 75 line. Because this is over a black primer, he does two to three layers everywhere on the armor. After that, he then adds a 50/50 mix of white into the yellow and does a highlight.

Once that’s dry he does one part thinner and one part Iyanden Yellow Contrast Paint. He does one coat over all the armor and then does a further coat on the upper layers of armor to create more contrast.

Step 3:

For this step, start with Reiksland Fleshshade from GW and he adds that into the darkest parts of the armor, this helps knock off some of that greenish color. Next, he breaks out the brush with Thamar Black and paints in the shadows to help define them, just be careful here.

After that, he takes Red Leather and does all the leather and straps with it.

Step 4:

Now he moves to the face and paints that with Cadian Flesh as a base coat. then for highlights, he adds some colors from his palette and starts highlighting with the mix. For all the lenses and little highlights, he breaks out the Jorildyn Turquoise and hits all of them. all the pauldrons are painted with Deathless Metal and the silver is painted with Emerald Alchemy.

Step 5:

Now it’s time to weather the model. He takes a little sponge and dabs it onto the armor where he wants it to look weathered, just wherever you want it. to finish off before the transfers, he just does a gloss varnish.

Decals:

For this, he uses Micro Sol & Set. For this, you put the decals in warm water until it comes off the sheet, he then puts the Micro sol on the piece and once it’s on, he uses a Q-tip to smooth out any of the irregularities. Super simple.

Overall this took him about 45 minutes, so not bad at all to get some great-looking marines!
