The Tyranids are swarming monsters that scour the galaxy for biomass. Their only goal, as far as anyone can tell, is to consume, create more Tyranids, and begin the cycle anew. In the new edition of Warhammer 40,000, the biggest hive fleet ever seen has begun to close its salivating maw around the galactic west, ready to carve a path to the tasty centre of the Imperium.

They showed off all the units, but we’ll focus on the army-wide rules. If you want to download all the cards, you can here!

Free Tyranids Index Cards 2First, synapse is changed quite a bit, but it will really let your units be much harder to battle-shock. Shadow in the Warp is actually insanely strong against certain armies. This can take enemies off of objectives, and even if you battle-shock a few units, this can really be a game changer.

Free Tyranids Index Cards 3We’ve seen this rule already, but these are huge; you can either go anti-infantry, anti-tank, or anti-character!

Tyranids Stratagems

Free Tyranids Index Cards 4Rapid Regeneration is huge as, most of the time will give you a 5+ FNP (when in Synapse range), for only 1 CP.

Death Frenzy can be a great way to destroy enemy units, even if they destroy you first. Adrenal Surge can be fantastic to get a ton of attacks through when you go against something that is super tough.

Lastly, Overrun will let you consolidate 6″, or make a normal move up to 6″!

Next up, if you are playing Invasion Fleet, Synaptic Insight is fantastic, as it will give two units another adaptation. Endless Swarm lets you regenerate models, and with D3+3, you should, on average, get five models back!

10th Edition 40k Tyranids Psychophage Rules (June 2nd, 2023)

The new rules come from Warhammer Community.

40k Tyranids Psychophage Rules

That Anti-Psyker ability combined with Devastating Wounds means that you’re causing mortal wounds to PSYKERS on each Wound roll of 2+. Farseers, Infernal Masters, and Living Ancestors will all be quaking in their boots.

If you’re going against psykers, this will really shine, as on a 2+; you deal two mortal wounds! Even against big infantry units, it should still be quite helpful (especially against Space Marines with D2).

40k Tyranids Psychophage Rules 2

The Torrent ability means this vile belch of psychocorrosive ash automatically hits its target, while Ignores Cover prevents them from hiding in terrain. Once you’ve inflicted some harm – or got an allied swarm to do it for you – the Psychophage goes into a feeding frenzy, like a shark detecting a drop of blood in the water.

A strength six flamer is always going to be strong!

40k Tyranids Psychophage Rules 3

It may seem like the Psychophage is a fussy eater, but with the weapons at its disposable, it’s quite happy to eat anything that’s foolish enough to get close, not just psykers. Just be sure to get some of the smaller critters to grab toothbrushes and help with all of those teeth afterwards.

This is actually insane when you think about psykers, as you’ll be hitting on a 2+ and doing mortals on a 2+.

Tyranids Neurotyrant Warhammer 40k Rules (May 15th, 2023)

The new rules come from Warhammer Community.

40k Tyranids Neurotyrant Rules

The vast, infallible judgement of the Hive Mind has seen fit to swell the mind of this creature to immense proportions, and all that grey matter makes it both a formidable psyker and a perfect node.

The model itself is really cool, and we’ll have to wait and see what the smaller brain bugs do, unfortunately.

40k Tyranids Neurotyrant Rules 2

Their unique cerebral structure acts as a focal point for the Shadow in the Warp, increasing the mental pressure exuded by the Hive Mind until it reaches an excruciating level, dominating their prey with Psychic Terror.

This is huge, as it’s a full army-wide NERF to your enemy, and with more LD tests, this should have a considerable impact.

40k Tyranids Neurotyrant Rules 3

Each Neurotyrant acts as a potent Synaptic Relay, enabling two units within 12” to act as if they are within Synapse Range until the start of your next Command phase, no matter where they end up. Your deadliest melee units can stretch their legs and hunt down troublesome enemies.

This really lets you run your combat units forward without much regard for Synapse units in range, which is always nice. However, we were hoping for a datasheet or some attacks, but it looks like this is all we’ll get this time around.

Tyranid Gaunts 40k Rules: Barbgaunts (May 13th, 2023)

The new rules come from Warhammer Community.

New Tyranid Gaunts 40k Rules

The Heavy ability makes them ideal for plonking down in sight of an objective to rain fire down on your enemies, while Blast makes you even more dangerous against larger units. Any infantry that survives the initial attack will also find their advance disrupted.

With a big unit of these, they will get an insane number of shots (on average, you should get 3.5 per model, so five would give you 17-18 attacks). Then, with the blast rule, the number can get really crazy. So, while they don’t have AP and only D1, they could still be able to take out tons of infantry.

New Tyranid Gaunts 40k Rules 2

Yep, those bio-cannons fire chitinous projectiles that slow your foes down.

This is pretty huge and can really slow down those melee-heavy armies; with -2 to both move and charge, they will have a rough time getting into combat.

Neurogaunts

New Tyranid Gaunts 40k Rules 3

These little critters scuttle across the battlefield in massed swarms, each carrying a parasitic neurocyte upon their backs. Individually they may not seem up to much, but a big enough unit may be able to drag down a Space Marine or two.

Well, all Tyranid swarms need some cannon fodder, and these are looking to fit the bill, but only one attack in combat and no shooting makes them nothing more than models on the table to get objectives and disrupt the enemy, however, they do have one nice rule.

New Tyranid Gaunts 40k Rules 4

They may look like bayonet or shovel fodder, but they have a little trick up their spindly chitinous sleeves – they can increase the Synapse Range of your leader-beasts, such as the Hive Tyrant and Winged Tyranid Prime. It turns out those weird things on their backs are synaptic conduits.

This is interesting, as you can run them up ahead of your big bugs and treat them as a middle ground between your super fast combat troops and your leaders.

10th Edition Warhammer 40k Tyranids Datasheets

New Tyranids 40k rules 3

Genestealers have helped shape the galaxy of Warhammer 40,000 from the early days of Space Hulk, lurking in the nightmares of Terminators ever since. They’re now twice as hard to put down, with one extra Wound each, while the Scouts 8″ core ability gives them a free move of 8″ after deployment. They’re perfect for scuttling over to a key objective, where their rending claws get full Wound re-rolls thanks to the Vanguard Predator ability.

With two wounds now and a 5+ Invulnerable save, they should be much harder to kill. Then, they can move 8″ before the battle, have four attacks at WS 2+, AP-2, and re-rolling wounds. They should be able to dish out some serious punishment while being a be harder to kill.

New Tyranids 40k rules 4

Tyranid swarms are capable of shockingly cunning strategic manoeuvres, and none exemplify this better than the Swarmlord. This apex bioform is a military genius on par with the galaxy’s best generals, spawned only when the Hive Mind needs to overwhelm particularly tough targets.

The Swarm Lord has an impressive statline, strong weapons, a great save, and plenty of special rules. He gets you an extra CP every turn, can increase enemy Stratagem costs, and extends your Synapse range.

So overall, quite strong and perhaps a must take depending on points.

New Weapon Rules

New Tyranids 40k rules 5

The rupture cannon’s revolting payload gets even stronger in the new edition, to keep up with the tougher vehicles it’ll encounter, and it can put out some seriously eye-watering damage numbers. Better yet, the new Heavy weapon ability makes it more accurate, provided your Tyrannofex can stay put and plant its feet. Er, claws.

At Strength 18 and BS 3, this should rip through all kinds of tanks! Oh yeah, and each wound is -4 AP and 2D6 Damage! It looks like heavy weapons are getting quite strong in the new edition.

New Tyranids Stratagem

New Tyranids 40k rules 6

A swarm of Tyranids at full tilt is an endless tide of chittering creatures, replacing fallen bodies almost as soon as they hit the ground. These units are marked by the ENDLESS MULTITUDE keyword, which ties into the new-look Endless Swarm Stratagem. Termagants, Hormagaunts, Gargoyles, and the new Neurogaunts featured in the Leviathan boxed set all have this keyword. For just a single Command point, you can bring back up to six fallen critters – or take advantage of your Synapse network to target two units at once, and resurrect up to 12 models in each of your turns! That’s a lot of wasted firepower for your opponent.

For 1 CP, resurrecting up to 12 models is pretty insane, even if they are just Termagants; 12 models is a lot no matter how you look at it!

Warhammer 40k 10th Edition Tyranids Detachments Rules: (April, 7th 2023)

Faction 10th Edition Rules 2

The Tyranids begin their adventures in the new edition as an Invasion Fleet, focused on swift evolution and overwhelming offence. The Invasion Fleet’s Detachment rule is Hyper-adaptations, which provides three different abilities you can choose from each battle, depending on what you’re fighting.

Swarming Instincts adds the Sustained Hits 1 ability to your attacks against INFANTRY and SWARMS, landing an extra blow whenever you score a Critical Hit – that’s the new term for rolling an unmodified 6 on your Hit roll. This will be your go-to adaptation to handle an enemy horde or a stoic wall of elite infantry.

It looks like each sub-faction will have three options, and you pick one before the game starts. For Nids, we also learn what Critical Hits are (6’s to hit, pretty obvious, but hey), and Sustained Hits give you exploding 6’s. However, we really don’t know exactly what the other two will give you quite yet.

10th edition 40k announced 5The datasheets look a lot different, but Toughness seems to be staying in the game despite the rumors otherwise!

Building armies is much simpler as well, very similar to the Arks of Omen detachments. As you can also see, they have an OC number, which means how good they are at grabbing objectives.
