More rumors are popping up this morning with talk of more starter boxes on the way for Warhammer 40k. Come see the latest 40k faction pairings.

Accord to BoLS, there’s word of more starter boxes coming for Warhammer with some odd-pairings faction wise in the sets that we wouldn’t normally expect. Let’s dive right in.

New Rumors: More 40k Starter Boxes on the Way?

  • Look for Box Sets to line up with Codex releases
  • Box Set releases will be more common
  • They will contain unusual match-ups
  • Factions include Grey Knights, Sisters of Battle, Orks, Tyranids, and Space Marines.

If you’ve noticed the trend that we have, it seems like Box Sets from starters, to Kill Team factions have been becoming way more common since the start of 8th edition. It looks like around the time a Codex releases, there’s a Box Set right in front of it like with the upcoming Orks and Speed Freeks.

Here are just a few examples:

forgebane

Remember when Forgebane came out just before the Necron Codex? It also featured two brand new models.

Tooth & Claw

Tooth and Claw just came out as well. This was all right before the Space Wolves codex, and the rumored Genestealer Cult codex in early 2019. On top of that, Space Wolves vs. Genestealer Cult isn’t exactly what people think of when someone mentions a Box Set.

Once again, however, new models were in this box as well.

40KDarkImperiumENG01

Dark Imperium wasn’t necessarily extremely close to a codex release, but this was at the start of 8th edition. Primaris Marines vs. Deathguard. This box had a whole slew of new units and models to choose from the majority of which were supplemented later that year with Multipart codex versions.

Looking at it from a different perspective, the Box Sets the rumor is talking about may not even be for 40k. Have you considered more Kill Team sets?

Look at the Kill Team: Rogue Trader set. No one would’ve ever thought about Rogue Traders going up against some Nurgle-infested crewmembers. Yet we’ve got it!

These two Kill Teams may not necessarily be a “Box Set” but they are released at the same time and definitely go together. Bottom line, these rumors could even branch into Kill Team or even Necromunda. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Looking Ahead

sisters of battle

If the Rumors are true, we could have some really creative Box Sets ahead of us. Going off of the factions that were talked about in the rumor, Something like Sisters vs. Tyranids would be sweet.

Blood Angels DID just get wiped off their home planet. Maybe some Sisters were going out on a search party for Blood Angel survivors and came across a Tyranid ambush. Then BOOM! a Box Set!

Moving to Grey Knights, they have definitely taken the backburner in 8th edition. It would be nice to see a little revamp in that faction as they have just been pummeled into the ground after back-to-back FAQs. The first army you think that would go against Grey Knights is Daemons, but what if they fought something like Orks in a box set. It would definitely be different and unexpected.

These are just a few examples of what may be in store for us hobbyists. There’s definitely been a theme that we can’t deny from these Box Set releases. They’ve been more and more common and show two unlikely factions going up against each other.

What do you think about these rumors? What Box Set combos would you like to see? Would you like to see more 40k or more Kill Team action?
