Who doesn’t love a good plague daemon? There’s something just so gross and maybe somehow fun about these guys, even if they want to infest all the mortal realms with plague. Get out your oldest dirtiest coat and let’s learn about some lore!
In the World
The plague God Nurgle has many untold legions of followers and horrifying daemons. From lumbering behemoths to the tiniest of Nurglings. The most common and numerous among these pestilent hordes are the Plaguebearers of Nurgle. The shambling, corpse-like daemons are most eager and happy to spread Grandfather Nurgle’s blessing to the rest of the Mortal Realms. But of course, they don’t go around spreading pamphlets. They spread their blessings in battle, killing their mortal foes or infecting them with disease. By the time they are done, more will quickly join their ranks from the corpses of their fallen enemies.
Any mortal afflicted by Nurgle’s Rot is a dead man walking, doomed to a painful death sooner or later. When their soul has been snuffed out and only a corpse remains, a Plaguebearer appears. These daemons will quickly take over the corpse and reanimate into the bloated, sickly beings in service to the Plague God. These lesser yet immortal daemons are doomed to carry Nurgle’s mark and spread his plagues for all eternity. Powerful or chosen daemons can ascend the ranks and become mighty Heralds of Nurgle.
When the Daemons of Nurgle go to war, their rank and file are made up by uncountable hordes of these Plaguebearers. Slowly shambling into the fray with an ungodly resolve. Often surrounded by what seems like a thick black mist. This mist however is hordes of plague-ridden flies ready to shield the Plaguebearers from ranged attacks and pounce on their enemies like a horde of wasps. Plaguebearers wield cursed, bone-like Plagueswords. These blades are covered in rust and disease so one cut is enough to put an end to any mortal given enough time.
On the Feild
On the Tabletop of the Mortal Realms, Plaguebearers are a battleline option for any Nurgle-aligned army. They are a relatively well-priced unit of 110 points for 10 models and are easily reinforced to up to 30 models. Their resilience and defensive abilities make them a perfect objective holder or screening unit while other daemons bring in the hurt. Plaguebearers thrive when in large numbers and when supported by their daemon allies. They are extremely slow, however, with only a 4″ movement speed. This does make them vulnerable to saturation attacks by the foe.
All Plaguebearers are equipped with vile Plagueswords, rusted and poisoned beyond belief. A solid 4+ to hit and a 3+ to wound makes sure that a big horde is capable of taking down any foe with enough slow persistence. They’re also Disgustingly Resilient, allowing you to roll a dice with every wound they take, on a 5+ it is simply ignored. They are also constantly surrounded by a Cloud of Flies. This cloud makes them harder to hit, subtracting 1 from any hit rolls for ranged attacks made against the horde. The Cloud of Flies grows even stronger when the horde is with 20 models or more.
The leader of the horde of Plaguebearers is a Plagueridden, who gets 1 extra attack with his Plaguesword. Plaguebearers can also be accompanied by Icon Bearers and Pipers. The former allows an unmodified roll of 1 for the battleshock test to reanimate fallen Plaguebearers, adding D3 models back to the fray. The latter allows you to re-roll rolls of 1 for battleshock rolls against enemy units.
These shambling corpses are numerous enough to conquer any Mortal Realm in the name of the Plague God.
