Privateer Press has given us a preview of a new themed force that will be released this September… and it is quite Irregular!
If you are fan of Mercenaries, then you are going to love this preview from Privateer Press in their weekly Insider. Themed forces have been Privateer Press’ project for awhile and it appears to be worth the wait. These themed forces will add a massive amount of army-building potential and give models that have not seen much time on the table a chance to thrive in a new list. Now, many Mercenary armies will not look as illustrious as Magnus’ Kingmakers or Rhulic Soldiers, but they are just as devoted to coin and glory.
The Irregulars allows you to take any Mercenary warcaster and non-character warjacks as well as all Mercenary units and Mercenary character solos. Yes, you read that right: all units and character solos. Add to this the ability to add Mercenary battle engines and you have a themed-force with a lot of options. For every 25 points of units and warjacks, you net yourself a free command attachment or small- or medium-based solo without the lesser warlock rule. When choosing solos, review the ‘jack marshal options available to the Mercenaries.
The Irregulars will also benefit from an ability that is not often used: ‘Jack Marshalling. The Mercenaries have a lot of great ‘jack marshals available to them such as: Captain Sam MacHorne & the Devil Dogs, Rutger Shaw, Dirty Meg, Thor Steinhammer, Raluk Moorclaw, and Colbie Sterling. It is important to have a good selection of marshals due to the send benefit of this themed force: Flank. This is a highly powerful ability when used on a swarm of light warjacks and add in that warjacks count toward the point threshold to receive free solos, the synergy becomes glaring obvious.
There is also a benefit to adding heavy warjacks to your Irregular force. For each unit in your army, one heavy warjack gains Advance Move, allowing it a full advance before the game begins. This will aid in getting your heavy warjacks quickly up field and into your enemy’s face.
Mercenaries are going to be very fun to play and the list options they have will guarantee wildly varied theme forces that will appear on the field. One list that is being tested by William at Privateer Press is below:
