What is Warhammer Epic Scale?

Table of Contents & Article Summary show

Epic Scale of Legions Imperialis Miniatures 2Picture this: towering Titans, columns of tanks, and entire legions of Space Marines clashing in battles so massive, regular Warhammer 40K models just can’t handle it. Enter Epic scale 40K, the answer to the age-old question, “What if Warhammer was even bigger, but the models were smaller?”

Warhammer Epic Scale reduces the size of individual models (to around a quarter of their original height) but cranks up the scale of battles. This lets players field not just squads or a handful of vehicles but entire armies brimming with tanks, infantry, and towering war machines. It’s where you can see hundreds of soldiers fighting alongside behemoth Titans without crowding your dining table.

In short, Epic 40K is where your grand vision of full-scale warfare on alien worlds comes to life, offering a more strategic and colossal experience.

A Brief History of Epic Scale Warhammer 40K

Before Legions Imperialis, there was Adeptus Titanicus in 1988, where battles were fought between titanic God-engines. The early days of Warhammer Epic Scale were all about seeing giant machines trade devastating volleys across alien battlefields.

But it wasn’t until Space Marine (1989) that the idea truly grew legs. Now, infantry, tanks, and artillery joined the fray, and we got a taste of the large-scale, combined arms warfare that would define Epic 40K. Over the years, we’ve seen various iterations of the game, including Titan Legions and the simplified but controversial Epic 40,000 in 1997.

Despite a loyal fanbase, Epic 40K took a backseat as Games Workshop focused on mainline Warhammer games. Now, after two decades, the return of Legions Imperialis is poised to reignite the thrill of epic warfare with a fresh take, rooted in the blood-soaked history of the Horus Heresy.

Overview of Legions Imperialis in the Context of Epic 40K

epic scale teaserLegions Imperialis is the latest evolution of Warhammer’s epic-scale experience, focusing on the grand battles of the Horus Heresy—a time when brother fought brother in a war to decide the fate of humanity. What sets Legions Imperialis apart from its predecessors is the sheer variety of forces on the battlefield.

This time around, it’s not just about Space Marines. You’ve got Solar Auxilia (those regular human grunts who still somehow manage to survive in this grim universe), an array of tanks, and of course, the mighty Titans. And while the models are a quarter of their usual size, their detail remains impressive.

In Legions Imperialis, you don’t just command a squad or two—you take control of entire companies. We’re talking massive formations of infantry, battalions of tanks, and even Warhound Titans lumbering across the battlefield. It’s a scale of warfare that perfectly complements the grand, galaxy-shattering scope of the Horus Heresy.

Why Epic Scale 40K is Significant for Large-Scale Battles

So, why does Epic Scale 40K matter? In standard Warhammer 40K, you’re often working with smaller, more specialized forces. That’s great for skirmishes, but when you want to play out the kind of gigantic clashes you read about in the novels—where entire planets are contested—it falls short.

With Legions Imperialis, you can finally bring those legendary battles to life. The game’s reduced model size allows you to field massive armies while still maintaining tactical depth. Want to see rows of tanks, hundreds of infantry, and towering war machines all moving in unison? This is your chance.

Plus, epic-scale battles force you to think like a true general. You’re not just moving a few squads—you’re coordinating entire formations, making strategic decisions that can tip the balance of war. It’s not just about the coolest individual model but how you handle your whole army. For fans of epic conflicts and large-scale strategy, this is where Warhammer goes from grand to absolutely gargantuan.

The Evolution of Epic 40K: A Look at Warhammer’s Epic History

If you’ve ever thought, “Warhammer battles are cool, but I want bigger fights,” you’re not alone. That’s where Epic scale 40K swoops in, taking the galaxy-spanning warfare of Warhammer 40,000 and cranking it up to absurdly awesome proportions. But this didn’t happen overnight. The road to Legions Imperialis is paved with a rich history of titanic battles, massive tanks, and entire armies duking it out in epic scale. Let’s break it down and see how Epic 40K became a reality.

The Origins of Warhammer Epic Scale Games

Before Epic 40K became the battlefield extravaganza we know today, there was Adeptus Titanicus (1988), the game that kickstarted the concept of miniaturized mass warfare in the Warhammer universe. Instead of the small-scale skirmishes of classic Warhammer 40K, this game turned the focus to colossal Imperial Titans, those massive walking war machines that lay waste to anything in their path. The entire premise was to simulate the battles between these gigantic God-engines, and it laid the groundwork for what would soon explode into Epic 40K.

adeptus titanicus (1988): The Beginning of Epic-Scale Warfare

It all started with Titans. Back in 1988, Adeptus Titanicus hit the shelves, allowing players to control massive war machines like the Warlord Titan. The game was set during the Horus Heresy, when the galaxy was torn apart by civil war, giving players the perfect excuse to have Imperial forces face off against one another. The scale of the miniatures was drastically reduced to make room for these giant machines. This meant you could fight out enormous battles without your living room floor looking like a parking lot of full-sized models. Titans ruled the battlefield, and it was glorious.

Epic 40k Space MarineSpace Marine (1989): Introducing Infantry and Vehicles at Epic Scale

While Titans were cool, the real excitement came in 1989 when Space Marine introduced the full spectrum of Warhammer units—infantry, tanks, and artillery—into Epic scale. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about gigantic war machines; you could now control entire companies of Space Marines, tanks rolling forward in coordinated strikes. This expansion of the battlefield made the game more strategic and immersive. For the first time, you could field hundreds of miniatures in one game, allowing you to truly live out those planetary invasion fantasies.

Key Editions of Epic 40K Over the Years

Space Marine (1991) and Its Impact on Epic 40K

Epic Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2By 1991, Space Marine had undergone a few upgrades, introducing even more units and expanding the rulebook to create a more complex and nuanced game. This edition added new factions, new vehicles, and new ways to obliterate your opponents in a way that had never been seen before in Warhammer. It marked the moment when Epic 40K truly started to come into its own, not just as a side game but as a massive-scale strategy experience.

Epic Warhammer 40k Space MarineTitan Legions (1994): Expanding Epic-Scale Titans

In 1994, the game took a giant step (pun intended) with the release of Titan Legions. While Space Marine focused on balanced armies, Titan Legions swung the pendulum back toward the God-engines. This was the debut of the Imperator Titan, a towering behemoth that made even Warlord Titans look tiny. The game introduced larger, more complex Titans and expanded the scale of destruction even further. You didn’t just command infantry and tanks anymore—now you had these world-crushing monsters on the field, and they demanded attention.

Epic 40,000 (1997): Rules Changes and Model Updates

Fast forward to 1997, and we got Epic 40,000, a streamlined version of the game that made it easier to play but—controversially—simplified many of the elements that fans loved. Gone were some of the more complex unit interactions, replaced by a faster, more fluid system. While some saw this as a welcome change, others missed the depth of previous editions. On the plus side, the models got an update, and the streamlined rules made it possible to field even larger armies without drowning in rulebooks.

Epic Armageddon (2003): The Influence of Specialist Games Studio

Epic Warhammer 40k Space Marine 3By 2003, Epic 40K had settled into its groove with the release of Epic Armageddon. Developed by the Specialist Games Studio, this version took the best parts of previous editions—Titans, infantry, massive battles—and combined them with a more flexible army-building system. The game became more community-driven, with frequent updates and input from fans. New factions like the T’au were added, and the game’s balance was finely tuned to allow for massive yet tactically rich battles.

Legions Imperialis: The Return of Epic Scale 40K in the Horus Heresy

Legions Imperialis detailsWhat happens when you take the galaxy-shattering conflict of the Horus Heresy and shrink it down just enough to fit on your tabletop, but still allow for massive battles? You get Legions Imperialis, the latest chapter in the saga of Warhammer Epic Scale games. Whether you’re a fan of clashing titans, vast formations of Space Marines, or simply love the idea of waging war with hundreds of miniatures, Legions Imperialis is here to deliver all the epic warfare you can handle.

Overview of Legions Imperialis

Legions Imperialis armyLegions Imperialis is the glorious return of Epic scale 40K, bringing the grand battles of the Horus Heresy to a scale where entire legions, tanks, and titans can all fit into one epic clash. What sets it apart from other Epic 40K games is its focus on the legendary civil war that tore the Imperium in two. Instead of smaller skirmishes or limited battles, you’re looking at full-blown engagements where massive armies march across the battlefield, titans lumbering overhead, and tanks rolling forward in perfectly orchestrated chaos.

It’s a game where strategy is king, and it’s all about commanding not just a squad but entire companies of soldiers, armored divisions, and god-like machines of war. If you’ve ever wanted to recreate the scenes of planetary-scale warfare from Warhammer’s legendary lore, Legions Imperialis is your perfect battleground.

Inside, you’ll find enough models to field both the loyalist Space Marines and the mighty Solar Auxilia, not to mention the terrifying Titans. You get to wage war across the galaxy with units ranging from nimble Assault Marines to hulking Contemptor Dreadnoughts and Leman Russ battle tanks. And that’s just scratching the surface.

The box also includes the rulebook, dice, tokens, templates, and even measuring sticks to make sure your tactical genius can shine through with precision. Whether you’re a grizzled warlord or just stepping onto the battlefield for the first time, this box has everything you need to start your campaign.

223 Miniatures in the Box: Space Marines, Solar Auxilia, and Titans

Let’s talk about the real stars of the show: the miniatures. Legions Imperialis delivers a jaw-dropping 223 miniatures to bring your vision of galactic warfare to life. You’ll command 106 Space Marine infantry and walkers, from tactical marines to towering Contemptor Dreadnoughts, alongside their armored brethren—five tanks, including the ever-reliable Sicaran and Predator battle tanks.

Yes, the same Titans that make every battlefield shake. And let’s not forget, these aren’t just any miniatures—they’re finely detailed and crafted to capture the essence of Warhammer’s larger-than-life battles, even at a smaller scale. Check out the pricing and value here.

1/4 Scale Comparison to Warhammer 40K Miniatures

Epic Scale of Legions Imperialis Miniatures 2What makes Legions Imperialis stand out is its commitment to detail, despite the miniatures being roughly 1/4th the size of your standard Warhammer 40K models. While you won’t be measuring them in centimeters, the attention to detail on these miniatures is jaw-dropping. For example, you can line up four of these little Space Marines, and they’ll perfectly match the height of a standard 40K marine—stack them up if you want a visual aid.

This scale means you can field massive armies without needing a football field of table space. It also means that you can engage in those epic-scale battles without sacrificing the depth of Warhammer’s iconic aesthetic.

Setting and Theme of Legions Imperialis

New Horus Heresy Expansion 3Legions Imperialis brings the brutal conflict of the Horus Heresy to your tabletop, focusing on the legendary civil war between the loyalists and traitors. If you’ve read about the devastating clashes between the Space Marine legions—think Istvaan III or the Siege of Terra—you’ll finally be able to relive these moments, controlling vast forces of Astartes, Solar Auxilia, and even the massive Titans that stride the battlefield.

The theme focuses heavily on combined arms warfare, meaning every unit, from foot soldiers to war machines, plays a pivotal role in the outcome of the battle. While previous Epic 40K games may have focused on specific factions or units, Legions Imperialis offers a true combined arms approach, where infantry, tanks, and titans all work together to turn the tide of war.

How Legions Imperialis Differs from Other Epic 40K Games

The big difference between Legions Imperialis and past Epic 40K titles is the level of detail and integration it brings to battles of the Horus Heresy. It’s more than just tanks and titans; it’s about the interaction of multiple forces across an expansive battlefield. The rules have been fine-tuned to allow for smoother gameplay while maintaining the complexity and tactical nuance that epic battles demand.

Another key difference? The game’s focus on the Horus Heresy era, which allows players to recreate the most iconic moments from Warhammer lore with a level of precision never seen before in an Epic Scale 40K game.

Compatibility with Other Games

Adeptus Titanicus Returns 5 Legion Imperialis adeptus titanicus is back campaign bookWorried about your Adeptus Titanicus or Aeronautica Imperialis collections gathering dust? Fear not. Legions Imperialis is fully compatible with models from these games, meaning you can easily integrate your existing collections into this new battlefield experience. Titans from Adeptus Titanicus slot right into the game, adding even more destructive power to your armies. See how the new rules and the rulebook work.

And it’s not just the Titans—Aeronautica Imperialis models can join the fray as well, allowing you to bring aerial supremacy to your ground battles. The fact that these games work seamlessly together is a major bonus for any Warhammer fan looking to expand their epic-scale warfare repertoire without having to start from scratch.

Miniatures in Epic Scale: Detailing the Legions Imperialis Models

Legions Imperialis details 4Warhammer’s Epic scale 40K is all about taking massive battles and squeezing them into a smaller (but still wildly chaotic) package. The Legions Imperialis miniatures are a love letter to the franchise’s most iconic units, bringing the scale down to allow for sprawling, grand engagements. But don’t let their size fool you—these models are packed with detail. Whether it’s a Space Marine Tactical Legionary or a towering Warhound Titan, every miniature is built to bring the galaxy’s most devastating conflicts to life.

Comparing Legions Imperialis Miniatures to Standard 40K Models

If you’re used to handling standard Warhammer 40K models, the scale of Legions Imperialis might feel like you’ve wandered into the Warhammer universe’s shrink ray. At roughly 1/4 the size of regular models, these miniatures are designed to allow huge armies to fight it out without overwhelming your table. Imagine lining up four tiny Space Marines to match the height of one standard-sized Marine, and you’ll get the idea. This smaller scale makes it possible to bring the massive battles described in the lore—where entire planets are under siege—onto your tabletop.

Scale Comparison: How Epic Scale 40K Miniatures Are Designed

Epic Scale of Legions Imperialis Miniatures 3Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Epic scale 40K miniatures have been meticulously crafted to ensure that, despite their reduced size, all the iconic details are still there. From the rivets on a Leman Russ tank to the armor plating on a Contemptor Dreadnought, the essence of Warhammer’s larger models is preserved. Every detail is scaled proportionally so that, even at a quarter of the size, you can still recognize the craftsmanship and fierce design of each unit. And while these miniatures are smaller, the effect is grander—now you can field entire armies and truly see the scale of the Imperium’s might.

Space Marine and Solar Auxilia Miniatures

two squads of Assault MarinesBreakdown of the Space Marine Force: Tactical Legionaries, Terminators, and Dreadnoughts

The Space Marines in Legions Imperialis are as intimidating as ever, even when they’re tiny. The core of your force consists of Tactical Legionaries, the backbone of the Space Marine legions, represented by squads of five per base. Alongside them, you’ve got the heavy hitters: Cataphractii Terminators, armed with power fists and storm shields, ready to wade into battle and crush anything in their path. Not to be outdone, the force also includes several Contemptor Dreadnoughts, bringing their twin-linked lascannons or assault cannons to bear, making these smaller forces still feel like absolute juggernauts.

Meanwhile, the Solar Auxilia march into battle as the elite human defenders of the Imperium, bringing with them all the firepower a loyal servant of the Emperor could ask for. Their Lasrifle Auxiliaries fill out the ranks, but don’t underestimate them—these humans come in droves, and their sheer numbers make them a formidable force. Supporting these infantry are the trusty Leman Russ battle tanks, iconic symbols of Imperial power, bristling with heavy bolters and battle cannons. For even more heavy-duty destruction, the Malcador heavy tanks and Aethon Heavy Sentinels make their appearance, ready to crush the traitorous hordes under their tracks.

The Role of Titans in Epic Scale

warhound titans epicWarhound Titans: Key Models in Legions Imperialis

The real stars of Legions Imperialis, though, have to be the Warhound Titans. These smaller cousins of the larger Imperator or Warlord Titans are no less deadly, even in their diminutive epic scale form. Each Warhound comes with customizable weapon options, allowing players to outfit them with an array of devastating firepower, from volkite eradicators to the infamous melta lance. Watching these titans stride across the battlefield, towering over infantry and tanks alike, adds a colossal feel to every game.

New Plastic Weapon Options and Customization Features for Titans

In Legions Imperialis, customization is key, and your Titans are no exception. The new plastic weapon frames offer a range of options for outfitting your Warhounds. Want to tear through enemy ranks with ursus claws or obliterate squads with a natrix shock lance? Go ahead. These options allow you to tailor your Titans to suit your playstyle, whether you prefer long-range annihilation or brutal, up-close combat. The best part? These customizations look just as terrifying at epic scale.

Gameplay Mechanics & Strategy in Legions Imperialis

How to Play Legions Imperialis 2Game Mechanics for Epic Scale 40K

In Legions Imperialis, it’s not just about having a lot of miniatures—it’s about using them smartly. The game is built around detachments, where units are grouped into squads and assigned hidden orders that are revealed throughout the game. This mechanic adds an exciting layer of strategy, as you’ll need to anticipate your opponent’s moves while keeping your own plans under wraps.

Formation Building: Creating Armies with Epic Scale 40K Miniatures

Building your army in Epic scale 40K is all about formations. You don’t just throw units on the table—you create formations of infantry, tanks, and titans that function together as a cohesive fighting force. Each unit has a specific role to play, and coordinating these elements is key to victory. The game allows for some truly massive combinations, so whether you’re playing an all-out assault or a defensive stance, there’s a lot of room to flex your tactical muscles.

Importance of Terrain in Legions Imperialis

How to Play Legions Imperialis 3Terrain is more than just window dressing in Legions Imperialis; it’s a crucial part of your strategy. The interaction between these unit types creates a dynamic battlefield where coordination is crucial. No one unit can dominate alone—success lies in how well you use your forces together.

Super-Heavy Tanks and Support Weapons in Epic Battles

If you love the idea of driving a super-heavy tank into the thick of battle, you’re in luck. From the massive Malcador to squadrons of Sicarans, these vehicles are a staple of epic scale 40K. Combined with artillery and support weapons, these tanks bring massive firepower to the table, leveling cities and decimating enemy lines in ways that would be impossible in standard Warhammer.

Rumors are swirling about upcoming releases, expansions, and even new factions. If there’s one thing the Warhammer community loves, it’s speculation, and when it comes to Epic 40K, there’s plenty to talk about.

Future of Legions Imperialis and Epic 40K

The buzz around Legions Imperialis has been electric since its announcement, and Games Workshop doesn’t seem content to stop at just one core set. Word on the vox-network is that we can expect a steady stream of releases to keep the momentum going. From new units for the Space Marines and Solar Auxilia to potentially entirely new factions, Epic scale Warhammer is getting ready to expand in ways that’ll make your collection feel like just the start.

Planned Expansions for Legions Imperialis: What’s Next for Epic Scale Warhammer?

There’s been no shortage of speculation about what could be next in line for Legions Imperialis. New formations for iconic legions? Check. Expanding the Solar Auxilia with more tanks and perhaps even some air support? Very likely. But the big rumors center around whether we’ll see Xenos factions joining the fray. After all, Epic 40K isn’t just about the Horus Heresy—it’s about the entire galaxy being torn apart in brutal, endless war. Orks, Eldar, and even Tyranids are all possibilities that fans are eager to see on this scale. However, GW has made no attempts to even hint at Xenos… so we can still hope, but don’t get your hopes too high.

More so, if you’re a fan of giant war machines (and let’s be real, who isn’t?), you can likely expect more Titans to stomp their way into the game. Warhound Titans are just the beginning—rumors abound of Reaver Titans, Phantom Titans, and even larger units making an appearance in future expansions. It seems the designers want to keep raising the stakes for these galactic battles.

Using Existing Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis Models

Aeronautica Imperialis 2Already have a small fortune invested in Adeptus Titanicus or Aeronautica Imperialis models? Great news: Legions Imperialis was designed with compatibility in mind. That means your Titans and aircraft can slot right into the game with minimal fuss. The Titans, especially, already share the same scale, so you can field your Warlords and Reavers alongside the new infantry and tanks, instantly expanding your army without having to buy new models.

How to Incorporate Models from Other Epic Scale Games into Legions Imperialis

Incorporating models from Adeptus Titanicus or Aeronautica Imperialis into your Legions Imperialis army isn’t just easy—it’s encouraged. The rules are designed to let you take advantage of the full suite of Epic scale 40K options. So, if you’ve got some favorite Aeronautica Imperialis aircraft, go ahead and bring them in for some high-flying support.

The flexibility of the game’s scaling system makes it possible to transition models across games seamlessly, which also means you don’t have to rebuild your collection from scratch. Whether you’re expanding your Epic 40K collection with new releases or using your older models, the future of Legions Imperialis promises to deliver some truly epic (pun intended) battles.

Final Thoughts: Why Legions Imperialis is a Must-Have for Epic Scale 40K Fans

Contemptor Dreads epic scaleIf you’re a Warhammer fan who thrives on the grand scale of interstellar warfare, then Legions Imperialis is a no-brainer. It offers everything an Epic 40K player could ask for: massive armies, intricate strategic depth, and of course, plenty of Titan-sized chaos. With its roots deep in the Horus Heresy and a gameplay system designed for commanding legions, this is the Warhammer epic scale experience that brings those larger-than-life stories to your table in a very tangible way.

The Future of Warhammer Epic Scale Games

The future of Epic 40K rests in the hands of its community. Games Workshop knows that the Warhammer faithful are the lifeblood of the hobby, and so far, fan response to Legions Imperialis has been overwhelmingly positive. The key to the game’s longevity will be continued community support—whether that’s through fan-made campaigns, homebrew expansions, or simply more people showing up to throw down their tiny armies on the tabletop.

With strong sales and an engaged player base, Epic scale Warhammer is primed for a long and glorious run. And given the massive lore backing it, the game has a treasure trove of stories and characters to draw from. As the expansions roll out, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Legions Imperialis continue to dominate the epic-scale wargaming scene.

Speculation on Possible 40K Xenos Factions in Future Releases

Alright, here’s where the rumor mill really gets churning: Xenos factions in Legions Imperialis. The inclusion of alien races like the Orks, Eldar, or even Tyranids would open up endless possibilities for the game. Can you imagine swarming the battlefield with Epic scale Tyranids, their monstrous forms towering over tiny human soldiers? Or how about leading an Ork Waaagh! across the galaxy with everything from Battlewagons to Gargants? However, since this is based on Horus Heresy and not 40k, the chances are very slim. And, with Gw making no motions to making Xenos in LI, we wouldn’t expect it anytime soon, or if at all… sadly.
