It’s finally here! The Super Star Destroyer has just emerged from hyperspace to snuff out the Rebels in this massively anticipated expansion for Star Wars Armada!
Clocking in at 220 points, the Star Dreadnought Command Prototype is a 22 hull center-point to the Imperial fleet. This ship has a number of firsts: 6 shields in its forward arc; 3 shots per activation; 4 commands; 5 squadron activations; redundant Brace, Redirect, and Contain.
This ship also has 6 different firing arcs: 4 standard arcs to the fore, aft, and left and right and features 2 new auxiliary firing arcs towards the rear. Also of note, the max speed of this massive ship is speed 2 and has no yaw options whatsoever on its maneuver diagram. This ship is going to add a whole new element of play to the Armada game.
Since this massive ship has 3 attacks per activation, we want to capitalize on the damage potential by adding a Gunnery Team.
The forward firing arc has a respectable 4 red and 4 blue attack dice, and the front and left sides feature 3 red, 1 blue, and 1 black. Getting multiple shots from either of these arcs can be painful to any Rebel ship that dares approach. The left and right rear arcs and the aft section have less power, so a smaller Imperial ship would help to cover these vulnerable sections.
All of the rules regarding the Super Star Destroyer have not been revealed yet, so we are certain that some upgrades will not fit with this ship. But for now, we are going forward with some turbolaser upgrades; Enhanced Armament. This upgrade adds 1 red die to our left and right hull zones, and since the Star Dreadnought Command Prototype has 2 left and right hull zones on each side, we can get 4 extra red dice for 10 points!
Large ships that depend on large dice pools tend to need rerolls to help them hit their targets and Leading Shots is the premier upgrade for just that purpose. This Ion upgrade allows you to discard 1 blue die to reroll any of number of dice in your attack pool.
Since the Star Dreadnought Command Prototype has at least 1 blue die in all of its firing arcs, you will get your rerolls from close to medium range. Long range isn’t in the cards, unless you add 1 blue die with Quad Battery Turrets, but that’s for another build, another day.
Since the Star Dreadnought Command Prototype has 4 commands, it may be a bit sluggish to react to the much faster and nimbler Rebel ships. Having 3 Officer slots, this ship can afford to have some Liaisons. a Defense Liaison allows you to spend 1 command token to change your revealed command dial to a Navigate or Engineering command.
Executor Has Arrived: Star Wars Armada
This ship will be taking lots of heat, so extra shields and damage card removal from Engineering will keep it in the fight longer and Navigation can help with the non-responsive maneuver diagram. This new, huge ship will be the pinnacle of Imperial might on the tabletop in Armada. Start saving up for yours today!
