Harder & Steenbeck Ultra AirbrushThe Harder & Steenbeck Ultra is Rob’s choice by far for the best airbrush for painting miniatures for under $100 and blows away the Iwata Eclipse. He shows you why in this review!

Compared to the Iwata

Harder & Steenbeck Ultra AirbrushThe ULTRA is slimmer and tighter than the industry standard Iwata Eclipse airbrush. The outer components can be adjusted to your specifications, adding more or less pull to your trigger. Using a Harder backflush cap can aid you in backflow techniques with the ULTRA.

This airbrush is great at its price point and can be compared to the other more expensive models on the market today.

Ultra airbrushOverall, the Ultra has some pretty high-quality parts for the price and, overall, has a ton of great seals. If you compare it to the Iwata, it definitely has better-quality parts. So, it only makes sense that higher-quality parts make for a better airbrush!

How it Works

Ultra airbrush 2It actually has a lot of different parts that are adjustable, and you can change out the needle and adjust it to give you a stronger or lighter spray.

The needle tip can be switched out in the ULTRA, which you cannot do with an Iwata. The ULTRA can also be switched out using a 0.4-needle kit as well.

Harder & Steenbeck Ultra AirbrushThe paint pot of the ULTRA does not screw in as in most other airbrushes, which is the biggest downside in a sense. Keep this in mind when handling the ULTRA, as the paint pot can come loose if you are unaware. However, it has the added bonus of making the paint pot very easy to clean.

Testing it Out

Harder & Steenbeck Ultra AirbrushTesting the ULTRA airbrush with some paint is the next step in showing how tight we can make our paint lines and compare it to other airbrushes.

Adjust your air pressure to be very low to ensure that your lines match up and that you get a good test spray before you start. The ULTRA will be used to fix some “coffee stains” on this model.

Ultra airbrush 3Because you have the tension, you can adjust, and you can really get the exact level of pressure you need. Rob just gently pulls back and does it over the coffee-stained area, quickly eliminating the problem.

Ultra airbrush 4Overall, Rob is very happy with it, it speckles just a bit, but that can be changed by adjusting the pressure. For the price, this is hard to beat!
