Yes, Necrons! Warzone Atlanta had some gorgeous armies brought forth from hobbyists across the Country. But there were also some awesome homebrew lists too.
Warzone: Atlanta had a great 40k crowd. While the scene was competitive, some players took to their own experience playing their army and decided to switch things up bringing units their opponents might not have expected. Here are some of the more unique lists we saw from the event!
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we can look back at the event as if we were there ourselves!
World Eaters: Red Powell
Looking at a World Eaters/Berzerker-themed list, the Vigilus formation was taken with Lord Discordants in a Red Corsairs Battalion for a chunky CP battery. Next, another Battalion was taken filled to the brim with Khorne Berzerkers. These were all armed with chain axes and chain swords while the Sergeant toted a power fist.
Because the meta is so shooty, the Berzerkers can’t be expected to foot-slog it across the board and make their points back. Red loaded two squads into Rhinos while two more hopped in some Dreadclaw Drop pods. This is a more expensive Drop Pod but has some nasty attacks and decent auto-hitting shooting. We think this let the Berzerkers drop down turn one and already create pressure and buy time for the ones in Rhinos to catch up.
For a bit of screen-popping firepower, two Rapier Batteries armed with quad heavy bolters were also taken. This was just a cheap chassis for decent shot output. With all the units charging in the enemy’s face, they didn’t really have time to deal with the screen killers.
Necrons: Geoff Osborne
Moving into the Necron force, Geoff took the framework of the more-popular Necron list and made one hefty change. Doomsday Arks and Doom Scythes were brought as usual. However, he dumped nearly half of his list’s points into two squads of six Wraiths. These are fast-moving T5 monstrosities with a 3++ invuln save and multiple wounds. Their only real use is melee but these guys can blink right through terrain as if it wasn’t there and take a real beating in combat.
The best way to deal with these guys is mortal wounds but if the other player didn’t have a Thousand Sons smite list, they were already starting the game off on the wrong foot. Pretty awesome list! Especially considering that it ran off of only six CP.
Chaos Soup: Christopher Gropp
Looking at this Chaos Soup list, some Bikers (for objective nabbing/tarpitting) paired up with some butcher cannon Deredeos and Obliterators. The Deredeos hung back and acted like a medium-toughness firing platform to support the rest of the list.
To add a little speed, two Heldrakes were also brought to help support the Bikers racing up the board.
To add all the tank-popping firepower the list needed, a dual-thermal Cannon Knight was brought with an entire Battalion of cheap Daemons to help screen and sit on backfield objectives. This was a pretty unique Chaos list that opted out of the Lord Discordants and Plaguebearers that we’re normally used to seeing. Great job!
With these three lists spotted at the Warzone: Atlanta list, which one looks the best to you? Have you been experimenting with your faction’s off-meta units?
