GW has given an “official” ruling on the 10th Edition 40k Imperial Knight Code Chivalric re-rolls rules for the Tacoma Open.
There has been some heated debate going on right now about how Knights re-rolls actually work in 10th Edition. If you interpret it one way, they get full re-rolls of one for hits and wounds. If you lean the other way, it’s a single roll of one for hits and wounds.
However, things get a little more confusing when you translate the rules from other languages, as they have almost completely different wording in different languages.
It’s also confusing because of the sequence of how attacks work now with the new rules.
Either way, Games Workshop has made an “official” ruling for the Tacoma Open.
GW Rules on Over-Powered 10th Edition 40k Imperial Knight Re-Rolls
So, let’s look at the issue from the beginning for Code Chivalric. First, there are pretty good arguments for either side of the rule. Technically, you do roll each attack separately (like you can choose different weapons to shoot at different units).
However, when you look at the actual ability, it is also easy to see how perhaps it’s a single re-roll.
But… the rule does say Each Time this is selected, you’re supposed to do every weapon separately, and then you are selecting the model to shoot or fight every time you pick a new weapon.
Or, again, it could be considered that you select the unit and take all the shots.
The first part of the attack sequence could make this rule mean a single re-roll, as you are selecting the entire unit. However, #3 is to make attacks one by one, as you are making each attack separately.
Then things tend to get slightly more confusing when you translate the same rule from other languages.
If you look at the French version, it seems to indicate you can re-roll any hits or wounds of 1s. Even though it might not be the result that some players want, this looks to be far more clear-cut than the English version.
This translation isn’t as great, but it is more like the English one, with room for either side to argue.
However, none of these may matter too much now as GW has finally come down with an official ruling for their US Open series.
This image claiming to be a ruling from Games Workshop comes from the Knight Households: Imperial, Mechanicus, and Chaos Facebook Page.
So, if you want to follow the official GW ruling for the Tacoma Open, you will only get to re-roll a single hit and a single wound. So, while people can still argue, this is the “official” GW ruling and may make the most sense to go with a single re-roll until further notice from the actual Games Workshop studio team.
