These 3 40k army lists hit the meta by surprise last week. It’s fun to bring homebrews that give top armies a run for their money.
While competitive tournaments will always have players using the top-meta lists for their factions, there are a few players that aren’t afraid to take units others might overlook. Here are the top three meta-breakers from the WarGamesCon presents event at Game Castle.

Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
Blood Angel/Guard Soup- Matthe Milam
Looking at this Guard/Blood Angel soup list, Matthew brought quite a few named characters. With a Smash Captain and Dante leading the charge, Sanguinary Guard and an Ancient followed close. With Blood of Baal out, Sanguinary Guard got two incredible stratagems allowing them to reroll wounds on all their boltguns as well as effectively doubling the damage of their encarmine swords. A Whirlwind also hung back to provide a little bit of covering fire.
Next, Corbulo, Mephiston, and the Sanguinor were thrown in a Supreme Command with a Relic Spartan being brought. This was just a tanky lascannon platform in essence. While the characters might have been jumbled up in different detachments, almost all of them were supposed to be hovering around the Sanguinary Guard for incredible aura buffs.
Finally, for some CP, Imperial Guard were brought in a Battalion with a single Tank Commander for a nice buff of S8 firepower. This list definitely had a wrecking ball unit to deal with quick as well as some nice backfield firepower.
Necrons- Tyler Parker
This Necron list used the idea of target saturation to pull out its wins. With a Battalion bringing most of the CP, the main powerhouses of the list came from the melee aspect of the C’tan Shard of the Deceiver, a massive ten-man sword and board squad of Lychguard, a Monolith, and a Seraptek Heavy Construct.
Looking into the Seraptek, it’s capable of completely mulching a Castellan in one round of close combat. The main two problems with the unit are that most of its damage is found in melee. Plus, it has to get the charge off to be able to swing first…and at the cost of 625 pts, two Knight Gallants can almost be taken for roughly the same price. As for the Monolith, most Necron players have probably repurposed them as paperweights right now. With its steep cost and lack of an invuln, it didn’t deter this Tyler from bringing it!
Adeptus Sororitas- Clifton Jackson
Sisters hit the field without their entire army model-line being released. Bringing a whopping five Rhinos, these Sisters all had a sweet ride to get into battle. A couple of Repentia hit the table as a glass-cannon shock troop as well as some Seraphim for an alpha-striking unit. While a few other characters supported the girls, the tank-popping firepower came from three Exorcists sitting in the backfield taking up a quarter of the list’s overall points by themselves.
