New ‘Old Foes’ Themed 40k Army Bundles Are a Hard Pass

old-foes-army-bundlesWhoops, it looks like the new ‘Old Foes’ themed 40k army bundles that GW announced as a new week-long promotion are a hard pass at least for now.

Each week Games Workshop said they will be putting out new ‘Old Foes’ themed 40k army bundles, so if you want to grab the first offering (for Necrons or Space Marines) you have to by October 12th. After that, it looks like there will be new ones announced once again for the rest of October at the very least.

To celebrate these epic rivalries, Games-Workshop.com is bringing themed Old Foes army bundles to the webstore, each available for just one week. These are a new army project in their own right, and they bring you within striking distance of a free Sergeant Castus miniature this month.

The idea of these bundles is pretty interesting, but the real question is, will you actually save any money from buying the bundles? Well, that’s what we’re trying to find out! When the announcement first went live, they weren’t on the North American webstore, but now that they are there, we can break it all down.

Let’s see if you can save any cash.

40k Old Foes Themed Army Bundles Pricing & Value

Old foes bundleOne thing to note right away, if you buy the Space Marines one, you won’t quite have enough for the free exclusive SGT Castus model.! So if you’re buying this to get that mini, be sure to add a couple of paints or something to get your order over $240 and not miss out by $5!

space marine combat patrolFrom the looks of it, these “bundles” are just the respective factions’ Combat Patrol box sets with two more kits added. We also expect them to just come with the respective packaging for each as they don’t have any new box art posted on the bundle product listing.

Let’s start with the Marines’ value then check out the Necrons.

Space Marine Value:

themed army bundles

  • Impulsor $75
  • Ten-man Infiltrator Squad $60 (Multi-part kit price)
  • Eliminators $50 (Multi-part kit price)
  • Phobos Lieutenant $35
  • Suppressors $50? Does not have an individual kit yet…Following the price for Eliminators
  • Combat Patrol Price $140

We’re going to stop here for a second because this is just the combat patrol box, which has about a hundred dollars worth of value, but the price is the exact same for this. So, we’re going to sum this up as no value, because you can just buy the box separately if you wanted to, and get pigeon-holed into buying the following two kits:

Total MSRP: $235

Total Value: $0

Well… That’s unfortunate. While you do save money with the Combat Patrol over buying those units by themselves, this bundle is literally just all the contents prices added up. This does get you within $5 of the new exclusive Sergeant, but that’s really it honestly.

Necrons Value:

themed army bundles 2

  • 10 Immortals or Deathmarks $76 ($38 ea)
  • Night Scythe or Doom Scythe $60
  • Tomb Blades $49
  • Overlord $28
  • Combat Patrol Price $140

Again, just like with the Marines, this is just the combat patrol box, which has about $75 worth of value, but the price is the exact same for this. So, we’re going to sum this up as no value, because you can just buy the box separately if you wanted to and not have to get these other two kits:

Total MSRP: $240

Total Value: $0

Once again, the value ranks at a big zero… That’s why we do these though, so you can decide if the bundles are worth your hard-earned hobby dollars! If you want the minis inside, this isn’t terrible because you get value from the Combat Patrols, but that’s really it.

Kinda makes you wonder why all the hoopla for a series of “limited” weekly releases that you can literally purchase a cheaper version of (with technically more value) in the form of the combat patrol boxes themselves…
