We have pictures of the upcoming Silver Templar rules coming in White Dwarf 456. From Warlord Traits to Relics and more, here’s a full look at everything for the newest Chapter supported by GW.
According to GW:
Fans of the Warhammer 40,000: Conquest partworks series will no doubt recognise these particular Space Marines! Known to be among the first dedicated Chapters of Primaris Space Marines created during the Ultima Founding, the Silver Templars are the stars of this month’s instalment of the ever-popular Index Astartes series. You can read all about the Chapter’s background as well as their famed focus and fury – which also happens to serve as their battle cry! You’ll be able to field them in battle with a new Chapter Tactic, two Relics, three Warlord Traits and a pair of Stratagems unique to the Silver Templars!
New Space Marine 40k Rules For Silver Templars SPOTTED
Looking at Warlord Traits first:
- Accomplished Duelist: This one is nice because you always fight first no matter what it seems. Plus, you get to reroll all of your wound rolls if you charged, were charged or heroically intervened.
- Precision Commander: You can essentially give the Salamanders Chapter Tactic to a Primaris Core Unit within 6″. Whatever that means.
- Spiritual Synergy: You can’t pick a relic to make it even more spooky, but each wound of a 6 does a mortal wound in addition to normal damage. Most HQ units have at best, 3-shot boltguns that are the best candidate for this weapon (or maybe a power sword if you didn’t give them a melee weapon relic). Overall, it just seems like you’re not going to have the dice output to proc mortal wounds.
As for Stratagems:
- The Swordsman’s Strike (1/2CP): Depending on how big the unit that you select is, it could cost 1-2Cp. But you essentially can pick a friendly unit in the shooting or fight phase. As long as they target a character, they can add 1 to hit rolls. That’s really not terrible. Especially if you catch something like a Cryptek off guard with some Intercessors. It can get you over that awkward hump of killing a character with non-melee units. Pretty good but probably never worth the 2CP. Keep things cheap.
- Claim Runes (1CP): This Stratagem is really wordy but you essentially can beef a Primaris unit in combat to +1 Strength and -1 AP on their attacks. If your opponent thinks they can pick off an Assault Intercessor Squad real quick, you can spend a CP and surprise them with a boatload of S5 -2AP chainsword attacks. That’s pretty solid.

Chapter Tactics & Relics
For the Chapter Tactic, it’s kind of a non-bo with the rules we just covered above. Bond Martial lets Silver Templars auto-wound on a hit of a 6+ and can reroll a hit roll for each unit.
But looking at the Warlord Traits we just covered, it makes Precision Commander a bit less attractive (because they’re already rerolling a hit roll) and Spiritual Energy may not even proc mortal wounds if you spike your hit rolls and auto-wound with some dinky combat knife attacks.
Now let’s get into Relics:
- Armour Of Zanaris: Not too shabby. You ignore AP up to -2 and have a 6+++ FNP. It can only be put on a Primaris model.
- Banner of Echoes: Ancient model only. This is a once per game +1 Attack ability to Silver Templar Primaris Core unit is within 6″. This just looks way outclassed by the Armour of Zanaris. You can also find a handful of different ways to add attacks to units all throughout the game with Blood Angels and you’re not restricted to just Primaris. If you’re trying to go melee/attack buffs, just play Blood Angels maybe.
Honest answer: Silver Templars look a little meh. They have some rules that are straight-up counter synergistic to each other and whatever they do well, other Chapters just do better. But that is sight unseen from the new codex book, that may just ramp these rules up to 11 when it releases.
