Painting Fur & Space Wolves Armor: Ragnar Tutorial

Starting RagnarPoor old Ragnar seems to have lost his head! Let’s see how Wyatt turns this from plain to amazing.

Base Coating

Second Base CoatWith the model primed black, apply a solid base coat of Pro Acryl Dark Grey Blue with the airbrush. The next color is Pro Acryl Faded Ultramarine and this will be used to highlight the armor at high angles, again with the airbrush.

ragnar highlightedAdd in some Pro Acryl Light Neutral Grey to the mix to get a very light blue and do a final highlight. Trying to hit the centerline to pop the blues out.

Painting the Head

Ragnar HeadPrime it with the Synylrez Red Brown to start. Then get your Pro Acrly Shadow Flesh loaded into the airbrush with plenty of Flow Improver. He focuses on the centerline of the face and feathers the paint out from there. This keeps the shadows intact. Next, he grabs Tan Flesh and hits the face from a top-down center focused attack. And that’s it for now, just two easy steps! He finishes the head in another video.

Painting the Cape

Base coat furMoving onto the cape, take some Vallejo Heavy Brown and base the entire thing with a brush. Then, using Pro Acryl Olive Flesh, basecoat the fur and leave the edges darker brown.

Cape RagnarWith the two base coats applied, grab some Pro Acryl Dark Umbeand highlight the middle sections of the fur using the airbrush.

Follow that up with any Black right down the middle of the previous brown, but still with the airbrush.

Finished RagnarWith that, the model is looking sweet and ready for detail work! If you want to hear more of his insights, watch the full video above!
