These 3 40k army lists took the Geekfest-Arcs of Fire tournament meta by surprise. It’s fun to bring what you want and give top armies a run for their money.
The Geekfest-Arcs of Fire 40k tourney brought in a total of thirty players to roll dice in the ITC format. Of all these lists, we’ll be taking a look at three of the most unique army compositions that showed up. (They didn’t do too bad either).
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we are able to look back at the events as if we were there ourselves.
Necrons: Brian Strongman
Rolling in deep with Necrons, Brian brought multiple Battalions spamming Immortals. Due to the fact that Warriors aren’t Fearless anymore, it’s better to take 5-man squads of Troops, and Immortals are just better for the job. A Destroyer Lord, Kutlakh, and a few Crypteks also hit the table leading his force.
Getting into the really unique aspect of this list, he dropped over a third of his list in units that we haven’t seen hardly any Necron players use. Twenty-six Lychguard in total. Lychguard with Warscythes were tasked with hunting more elite units like Primaris with their flat 2-damage melee weapons while the Lychguard with hyperphase swords were a great backbone unit to apply pressure to the enemy’s line.
To top it all off, 200 points were thrown into a Transcendent C’Tan. Considering how many Eliminators are running around in the meta, bringing such an expensive squishy character was a risky move. But with the speed and applied pressure from the Lychguard, it probably didn’t do too bad!
Chaos Marines: Jarett Leblanc
Bringing Chaos Marines out to bear, Abaddon, a Dark Apostle, and a Master of Possession led a Battalion of Cultists with most of the points being dumped into ten Possessed. The random D3 attacks is always a little scary but the rolls are spiked, you can get an absurd amount of decent AP attacks. The biggest trick was getting them into melee without getting shot up. However, to draw some of the fire, two Obliterators were taken and laid down covering fire.
A 2nd Battalion was taken for the CP battery with a couple of Sorcerers and a Lord hanging around fifteen total Marines with a missile launcher in each squad.
Finally, it’s listed as a Battalion, but it looks like it’s a Supreme Command Detachment using Slaaneshi Daemons. The Contorted Epitome is finding its way into a bunch of lists these days as it is a potent Psyker and can prevent enemy units from falling back within 6″. Overall, it’s just a solid toolbox unit to bring. Great job!
Slaanesh: Mark Peori
Mark hit the tabletop flexing all that Slaanesh had to offer. Bringing in two Keepers of Secrets (one being Shalaxi) as well as the Contorted Epitome, these tyrants of Slaanesh led multiple Battalions of Daemonettes. For some line-breaking shock troops, a few Fiends were taken to buy time for the rest of the force to make it to the front lines and start snip-snapping with their claws.
The main goal of this list is to tie up any kind of heavy shooting units. With most of the tank-busting power coming packed into two Keepers of Secrets, these can be blasted away pretty easily. Protection was key. For a small firing base, this list bought a Vanguard of Horrors and a ton of Flamers.
Overall, this army came with almost all of its shooting in the form of auto-hitting flamers. It came loaded with a gross Psychic Phase and an even more horrific melee potential. Great job piloting the fastest Daemon army around.
What do you think about these lists? Do you run one that looks similar? How do you feel about Greater Daemons in 40k compared to AoS?
