Top 3 40k Army Lists: New Years Brawl GT Tournament

best coast pairingsThanks to Best Coast Pairings we are able to look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.

3rd Place: Seth Piper- Necrons

necron wal

new year brawl necron 1For the first list, Seth opted for Necrons and of course took The Silent King. His auras are very strong, and he is pretty good by himself in combat as well.

new year brawl necron 2The second detachment brings a battalion lead by an Overlord and a Royal warden, hinting at a potential Core focused list.

new year brawl necron 3Moving onto Troops, we see a total of  53 Necron Warriors. That means there are plenty of bodies to take advantage of the auras offered by the two HQs and The Silent King. There should also be little to no issue in the first rounds taking the objectives.

Elites have a single C’tan Shard of the Void Dragon. This model is great on its own, it essentially functions as a mini Primarch and will make quick work of nearly any models in melee.

Lastly, Fast Attack has a Canoptek Scarab Swarm and 10 Triarch Praetorians. These offer a small throw-away screen unit to get a unit stuck in melee for a turn and 10 pretty decent more elite troops that can hold their own effectively.

2nd Place: Kevin Hogue- Necrons

necron wraith wal

new year brawl necron2 1The second list by Kevin has an Outrider lead by two Chronomancers. These offer charge rerolls and 5+ invulns to one unit each. They also have the nice bonus of a unit of Cryptothralls that don’t take up an org slot, and help keep those Cypteks in play.

new year brawl necron2 2There is only one Troop in this list and it is a squad of Immortals. These are more elite than the standard warriors and as such offer some heavier firepower in the Gauss Blaster.  The Nightbringer recently got a points bump, but it looks like this event was running the old version of points as it was probably a “too soon” moment for players and the TO alike.

In Fast Attacks, there are 23 Scarab Swarms. These offer great distractions that are great at wrapping up shooting units in melee for a turn or two while the rest of the list can do damage.

new year brawl necron2 3There are also 15 Wraiths. These are similar to Scarabs except they can actually do quite a bit of damage in melee and are much more mobile.

Lastly, of course, they also took The Silent King. He is simply too good to not take.

1st Place: Colin McDade- Harlequins

harlequin wal hor large

new year brawl harlequin 1The Harlequins list by Colin is a single battalion led by two Troupe Masters and a Shadowseer. Shadowseers help protect your troops by making the enemy reduce wounds rolls by one, while the troupe master allows you to reroll wound rolls in the fight phase.

new year brawl harlequin 2

new year brawl harlequin 3Five 5 man Troupe squads are pretty standard choices for Troops, especially when you realize Harlequins only have one troop choice. It also means there are 25 bodies to man vehicles and grab objectives all while benefiting from the HQ auras.

The Death Jester is a great cheap option that can deal some damage to characters and lets you abuse units that flee.

new year brawl harlequin 4For Fast Attacks, there are a total of 14 Skyweavers. These are very efficient fliers that are hard to hit and relatively reliable to deal damage with a bs 3+, not to mention how mobile they are, giving you great board presence and pressure.

new year brawl harlequin 5Finishing out the list are 5 Starweavers to help transport the 5 squads of Troupes. These are open-topped platforms, but even better are only 80 pts apiece. They essentially give the troupes 6 extra wounds and 22″ movement. It’s not hard to see why these are a staple of Harlequin lists.

Harlequins Victory- Congrats to Colin on the win!

What do you think about these 40k army lists from the New Years Brawl GT Tournament? Are Necrons shaping up to be a top army in 9th? How about other factions?
