Methodical Annihilation

  • What It Does:
    • Re-roll Hit rolls of 1 when attacking the closest eligible target or any unit within Engagement Range.
    • Kâhls, Ûthar the Destined, and Einhyr Hearthguard gain +1 AP on those attacks.

This rule rewards methodical targeting and close-range engagements, turning Hearthguard and Ûthar into devastating front-line threats. A simple but powerful combo is using Einhyr Hearthguard with their ranged weapons to melt closer targets while benefiting from the boosted AP. This rule is perfect for mid-board control, as it incentivizes advancing on key objectives while methodically wiping out enemy units nearby.

Enhancements – Buffing Your Leaders and Units

A picture of a Hearthkyn detachment enhancement

  • Bastion Shield (25 pts): Worsens AP by 1 for ranged attacks within 12″. Great for protecting key frontline units.
  • Quake Multigenerator (15 pts): Suppresses an enemy unit (-1 to Hit) if they’re hit in the Shooting phase. Excellent for softening up dangerous targets.
  • Ironskein (10 pts): Adds 2 Wounds to the bearer, boosting survivability for key characters.
  • High Kâhl (30 pts): Gives a 4+ chance for destroyed models in the bearer’s unit to fight before being removed. Perfect for counter-punching in melee.

These Enhancements are all about keeping your leaders alive and making your enemies regret closing the distance. For example, pairing a High Kâhl with a unit of Hearthguard creates a melee blender that fights back even when being overwhelmed.

Meanwhile, the Quake Multigenerator is excellent for debuffing hard-to-hit units like enemy flyers or elite infantry, ensuring your Votann firepower lands every shot.

Stratagems – Tools for Consistency and Flexibility

a picture of the Hearthband stratagems

  • Brëkkeknots (1 CP): Grants a 4+ invulnerable save to Kâhls, Ûthar, or Einhyr Hearthguard when targeted.
  • Sure of Purpose (1 CP): Pile-in or Consolidate up to 6″ instead of 3″, letting units wrap or advance aggressively.
  • Superior Craftsmanship (2 CP): Adds +1 Damage against Monsters or Vehicles in melee. Great for cracking tough targets.
  • Unyielding Aggression (1 CP): Allows Infantry to shoot and charge after Falling Back.
  • Materialisation Matrices (1 CP): Deep Strike units can deploy 6″ away from enemy units but can’t charge.
  • Fury of the Hearth (2 CP): Grants Rapid Fire 1 to Einhyr Hearthguard ranged weapons, doubling firepower at close range.

The Stratagems in Hearthband give you durability, mobility, and explosive firepower, especially for close-range engagements. A fun combo is using Materialisation Matrices to Deep Strike Hearthguard close to the enemy, then following up with Fury of the Hearth to drown your opponent in Rapid Fire shots. Meanwhile, Unyielding Aggression ensures your units stay mobile and dangerous, even when forced to Fall Back. It’s all about staying on the offensive and adapting to whatever your opponent throws at you.

Competitive Builds and Synergies

  • Einhyr Hearthguard Core: Use Methodical Annihilation to boost their AP and Fury of the Hearth to unleash devastating Rapid Fire volleys. Add Brëkkeknots for survivability and High Kâhl for melee punch.
  • Kâhl and Hearthkyn Support: Equip your Kâhl with Quake Multigenerator to suppress a dangerous target while Hearthkyn focus on clearing objectives and softening up threats.
  • Teleporting Strike Force: Combine Materialisation Matrices for Deep Strike deployment with Superior Craftsmanship for +1 Damage against Vehicles and Monsters. Great for disrupting backlines or removing key threats.
  • Counter-Punch Units: Use Unyielding Aggression to Fall Back, shoot, and charge again, keeping your enemy guessing and your units constantly on the offensive.

This detachment shines when you lean into Hearthguard as your core, with their durable armor and boosted firepower. The ability to teleport units into position with Materialisation Matrices, suppress enemy threats with the Quake Multigenerator, and then finish off tanks or monsters with Superior Craftsmanship makes for a deadly, adaptable force. Whether you’re playing aggressively or counter-punching, the Hearthband Battalion thrives on flexibility and precision.

About Sam Duguid: Sam has been into Warhammer 40K for about half his life, starting back in 2006 with the Battle for Macragge starter set in 4th edition. He got really competitive and even became the Top ITC Eldar Corsair player in 2019, using a sweet list made up entirely of Venoms and Reavers bands.

While Sam is all about the different flavors of Eldar, they also enjoy playing Astra Militarum, Charcharodons, Night Lords, and Knights! When they’re not focused on 40K, Sam loves to get into Warhammer Fantasy, Horus Heresy, Age of Sigmar, Legions Imperialis, Battlefleet Gothic, and even Titanicus.

They’re always looking for any game that they can convince their friends to play with them. Currently, Sam is working on their airborne Astra Militarum army along with several Age of Sigmar and Old World armies.
