magic the gatheringWizards of the Coast has announced the kickoff to the closed beta test for Magic: The Gathering Arena, their online game.

Wizards of the Coast has been in production of their Arena game for quite a bit. Finally, they have an approximate date for when their closed beta will be available to sign up for: November 30. This is an approximate kick-off date, depending on how the next few play tests go. People who participated in stress tests, play days, and the Alpha will be invited back first, then invitations will go out to interested people who sign up via the website.

Arena is looking to bring an authentic magic experience to the computer, bringing the evolving game to life on screen to play with people all over the world. The game should port the rules of the traditional game directly to the computer. The game is set to evolve as the cards do, adding new rules and cards when new expansions come out.

The closed beta signups come with NDA -restrictions, to prevent streaming and screen shares of the early stages of the game. These early stages will include some features of the game, but not all. For example, there will be no in-game economy elements, and no Draft. Game modes will be best-of-one ranked and Constructed matches, at this point, though more options may open closer to the time of the beta. Participants in the closed beta will also not be able to keep the cards and decks when the game goes live. In fact, they have stated that account wipes, in order to test multiple features (including economies), will happen multiple times.
