The Artemia Pattern Hellhound from Forge World is one of the best out there both for looks and in the game
However the recent price changes on Forge World originally had this model priced at around $60 and is now $84, and some of the parts may not line up on the resin when building this model, especially on the large fuel tank on the back.
Besides the price changes and extra modeling you have to do to build this tank, the Hellhound is a plucky little guy that can be very fun on the tabletop. The paint scheme is our classic grey workup and the tank treads are painted in a unique technique in which you forgo painting them with metal and go straight for some browns, cut the edges with some black, and then some sponge painting to add a little wear and tear with some metallic silver.
The extra modeling work on this model focuses on a little work on the bottom of the tank. To get the fuel tank to fit on the back you need to cut a small chunk of the plastic kit out on the bottom to allow for the tank to fit more flush with the armor panels on the back of the model.
This is a holdover to the old Chimera design that was revamped in the late 2000s.
Currently, the rules for the Artemia Pattern Hellhound are in the Imperial Armour Astra Militarum Index. This tank comes in at 81 points, a savings compared to the normal Hellhound tank at 101 points.
Editors Note: This model’s points have increased by 20 in the 2018 Chapter Approved book, bringing it more in line with the plastic one Games Workshop produces.
The Artemia Pattern also has a more powerful Inferno Cannon, doing 2 damage instead of the normal 1. As a Fast Attack option, this tank is also great for filling out an Imperial Guard Brigade formation.
One last note on tactics with tanks; be careful with infantry sized models that may try to envelop them. A “tri-tip” enveloping maneuver prevents your tank from leaving combat and moving out to ultimately go about securing objectives.
