A Beast of a Waaagh! Orks Horde 40k Army Throwback

robs ork showcase walTime to blow the dust off another 40k army collection in today’s throwback- this time its Rob’s massic Orks Waaagh from 5th edition that would make ol’ Ghazzy proud!

Just when you think you have enough Orks, you actually need more Orks. How do you play Orks in 40k? You apply Orks to the problem. Check out this dope converted and painted army that Rob crafted way back in the day. Some of the very first posts on this site featured tutorials on these very conversions and paint jobs!

A Beast of a Waaagh! Orks Horde 40k Army Throwback

robs ork showcase 1We’re blowing the dust off of this hand-painted Ork army back from when Rob owned it. From a zoomed-out view of the army, you can tell there are a ton of bodies (as there should be) but it doesn’t do the detail on each model much justice.

robs ork showcase 3Painted up in Deathskullz blue, every Waaagh! should have a big bad Warboss to lead the charge. He’s also got a couple of Nobz and Big Meks closeby to help keep order in the massive blob squads of Boyz.

robs ork showcase 4For the mechanical side of the list, Deff Dreads and Killa Kans hit the table with some sweet weathered blue paint and some splotched rust effects.

robs ork showcase 6Another detail that’s easy to miss is the checkered patterns across different units in the list as well as each unique paint job on the rockets of the Storm Boyz. That translates into hours of hobby love that really puts armies over that cosmetic “hump” from others.

So What’s In the Whole Army?

robs ork showcase 8Lastly, the all-star unit for the Orks in 8th Edition are the Lootaz. These guys combined with a couple of well-placed Gretchin squads can really give the opponent a serious headache. But so far, we’ve only just scratched the surface on everything in the army!

There are TONs of custom conversions from two super battlewagons with Deff Rollaz to individually converted and painted “gnoblar” grots!

For Rob’s old collection he hobby up all of these:

  • 30x (or so) Gretchin mostly converted from Gnoblars with Goblin heads (Plastic Grot kits came out too late for this guy), and three Runt Herds.
  • 1x Custom Converted Snikrot Model and 15 commandos with gasmask heads.
  • 6x Killa Kans
  • 3x Deff Dreads
  • 12x Boyz with Rokkits
  • 9x Boyz with Burnas
  • 3x Boyz with Big Shootas (in addition to six already in squads)
  • 3x Squads of 12 Nob Bikers (total 36 Nob Bikers) each complete with 5 Power Claws, Waaaagh banner, Rokkits, Pain Boy and other combi weapons.
  • 60x Slugga Choppa Boyz with Power Claw Nobz
  • 60x Shoota Boys with 6 Big Shootas and two Claw Nobz
  • 30x Stormboyz
  • 6x Deff Koptas
  • 1x Nobz Squad of ten armed like bikers.
  • 5x Battlewagons
  • 6x Trukks
  • 2x Kustom Battle Fortresses made from multiple Battlewagon Kits
  • 1x Big Mek Stompa with converted Lifta Droppa, Shield Generators, and other weapons (washed and drybrushed)
  • 1x Normal Stompa
  • 1x Magenitzed Stompa with extra arm to make Goff Claw Stompa.
  • 1x Custom Converted Ghazkull made from an Ogyrn, and black reach bits.
  • 1x Zagstrukk
  • 2x Big Meks with Kustom Force Field. One a complete scratch build.
  • 1x Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun

TL;DR- A lot of Greenskinz.

For those of you who are starting a horde army, just remember…It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as you’re having fun painting and playing with what you’ve got. Slowly grow that collection and paint as you go! Nothing this big is every thrown together overnight.

Do you like the Deathskullz Clan the most? How do you have your Orks painted? Do you have any dope conversions in your Ork army?
