Top Homebrew 40k Army List: Atlantic City Open

40k-homebrew-army-listsAnother off-meta 40k army list emerged in the Frontline Gaming Atlantic City Open, check this one out!

9th Edition’s meta is still settling, but some players are taking lists with units that nobody was expecting. Check out this awesome homebrew list that emerged in a tournament over the weekend. They didn’t do too bad and just goes to show that sometimes it’s more about the general’s skill than what you play.

Frontline Gaming Atlantic City Open: Sascha Edelkraut – Black Templars

Black Templar Neophyte Wal Hor

aco bt homebrewStarting off with this Battalion of Black Templars, by three fantastic HQ choices. The Captain on Bike provides rerolls of 1 to hit to core units within 6″, which happens to be most of the list. Chaplain Grimaldus, provides extra support and flexibility through prayers, while also being a decent beat-stick and being able to deny a psychic ability every turn.

The final HQ is a Primaris Chaplain on Bike, which much like Grimaldus provides extra support and flexibility through prayers, but is a little weaker and more mobile by comparison. He also doesn’t get the extra free deny the chance for psychic abilities.

As for troops, quite straightforward, there is a single Assault Intercessor squad which can serve as some melee bodies to body block, sit on objectives, or move up the board and try to trade for opposing chaff. There are also two Crusader squads that are functionally very similar to Assault Intercessors but are exclusive to the Black Templars. These are slightly cheaper per body, making them better to soak up shots first.

aco bt homebrew 2Moving onto Elites, this is the bulk of the list’s power. Starting with a Bladeguard Vet squad, these are solid melee options that are durable and can dish out a beating if they get into combat. A Primaris Apothecary helps keep all of these import units topped off, making them even more durable and harder to wipe out as the game progresses.

Two Redemptor Dreadnoughts equipped with Storm Bolters, a Gatling Cannon, and a Macro Plasma Incinerator make both dreads very good at cleaving through the chaff and decent at taking down higher armor targets from range. The Terminator Assault squad and Vanguard Vets both serve as some mini smash captains, with most of their weight in offense power. The Termies are more durable while the vets are more mobile. Both of these will pretty much obliterate anything they touch in melee, so the secret is keeping them at full strength and getting into melee.

There is a single Heavy support in the form of a Whirlwind, which provides some extra ranged blast shots to help where you need it. A Land Speeder Storm provides a couple of transport slots, but ultimately is just to fill out the extra points in the list to get closer to the 2k cap.

Overall this list offers a little bit of a different approach but we like it because of their all-in on an aspect of their faction in a response to the meta.

Even better they got decent results from the player who piloted it! It’s also very encouraging when a player is able to play a widely considered “underpowered” army or list style so effectively.

What do you think about this homebrew 40k army list from last weekend that caught our eye?
