How to Play Fyreslayers: Lofnir & Vostarg Lodges

We’re back with a  review of the theFyreslayers battletome and its 4 different “Lodges” (Vostarg, Greyfyrd, Hermdar, and Lofnir) that lets you build around your play style.

This week we will focus on the Lofnir and the Vostarg lodges. To check out the Greyfyrd and Hermdar lodges, look at our first Fyreslayers article here.

How to Play Fyreslayers: Lofnir & Vostarg Lodges

First, though let’s review the abilities that all Fyreslayers lodges get:

Ur Gold Rune: Pick one and roll a D6 on a 1-5 get basic ability on a 6 you ALSO get the enhanced. Each Rune can only be used once per battle.

  • Rune of Fury: Basic add 1 to hit rolls for melee weapons. (Enhanced adds 1 to Attacks)
  • Rune of Searing Heat: Basic is unmodified 6 to wound deal a mortal wound. (Enhanced rolls a D6 for every unit within 3” of your units, on a 2+ they suffer a mortal wound)
  • Rune of Awakened Steel: Basic is melee weapons get -1 Rend. (Enhanced is an additional -1 Rend)
  • Rune of Fiery Determination: Basic is all your units gain 6+ Ward Save. (Enhanced is 5+)
  • Rune of Relentless Zeal: Basic is add 2 to all Move. (Enhanced is adding 2 to charge rolls)
  • Rune of Farsight: Basic is add 1 to hit rolls for throwing axes. (Enhanced is adding 1 to wound rolls)

Fierce Counter Attacks: Command ability, use at the start of enemy hero phase, pick one friendly Auric Hearthguard, Hearthguard Bezerker, or Vulkite Bezerker unit within 3” of an enemy that made a charge move that turn, and not within 3” of a unit that has not made a charge move that turn. They gain the strike first effect. A unit can only receive this command once per battle.

Grimwrath Oaths: For each Grimwrath Berzerker in your army, they get one oath; you cannot duplicate oaths.

  • Against priests add 1 to hit and wound rolls and increase the damage of the weapon by 1.
  • Can become the retinue of an Auric Runefather or Auric Runeson
  • Can run and charge in the same turn. Can re-roll run and charge rolls
  • Add 1 to hit and wound rolls if they are within 12” of friendly allied units.
  • Ward saves of 6+ if within 3” of enemy units it becomes a 5+.
  • Unmodified hit rolls of 6 deal 1 mortal wound in addition to other damage.

Blaze of Fury: Heroic Action: Start of the hero phase, you can choose this action instead of the normal ones, until the end of your turn the enhanced effect of the ur-gold rune applies to this hero. Each hero can only use this ability once per battle.

Fyreslayers Lofnir Lodge 2,000 Point List:

Duardin Army fyreslayers age of sigmarNow let’s see what kind of flavor taking the Lofnir lodge will get you: Add 2 to Wounds of Magmadroth units and up to 3 Magmadroth units can be given mount traits. Also, Auric Runeson on Magmadroth are battleline.

  • Auric Runefather on Magmadroth: 360 Points, Leader 1 of 6, Behemoth 1 of 4
  • Auric Runeson on Magmadroth: 320 Points, Leader 2 of 6, Behemoth 2 of 4, Battleline 1 of 3
  • Auric Runeson on Magmadroth: 320 Points, Leader 3 of 6, Behemoth 2 of 4, Battleline 2 of 3
  • Auric Runeson on Magmadroth: 320 Points, Leader 4 of 6, Behemoth 2 of 4, Battleline 3 of 3
  • Auric Runemaster: 125 Points, Leader 5 of 6
  • Gotrek Gurnisson: 485 Points, Allies
  • Molten Infernoth: 70 Points, Invocation
  • Total 2,000 Points

This is the army you take if you don’t want to paint a bunch of models and love fire lizards. Having the Runesons on Magmadroths being battlelines makes this a very formable army. Really there is nothing in this army outside the Runemaster your opponent is going to want to go toe to toe with. However, you are lacking the bodies to put on those all-important objectives. Also, if you lose a model, it’s going to hurt as you have a whopping total of 6 units that can score points.  However, you have a ton of monsters to score bonus points with.

While Gortek may be slow, you have mobile units to take the fight to your opponent while he catches up, and your priest is there as a dispeller and to summon the Invocation. Your main struggle would be against opponents that can set up in reserve as they can take objectives in your backfield from you with the right troop placement.

For this army, you can’t really take any battalions or anything, but you get the bonus mount traits so that you can put one on the Runefather and two of the sons. For an artifact, I am going to take the Axe of Grimnir to make my Runefather more of a beatstick.

The last thing we need is our large Magmadroths getting bogged down so any damage input they can get it a win. For the command ability, I am going to take the Spirit of Grimnir and hope I get those enhanced abilities

How to Play Fyreslayers: Vostarg Lodge

fyreslayersNext up, we have the Vostarg Lodge: Add 1 to hit and wound rolls for attacks made with melee weapons by Vostarg Vulkite Berzerkers that made a charge move.

  • Auric Runesmiter: 135 Points, Leader 1 of 6
  • Auric Runefather on Magmadroth” 360 Points, Leader 2 of 6, Behemoth 1 of 4
  • Battlesmith: 150 Points, Leader 3 of 6
  • Auric Flamekeeper: 90 Points, Leader 4 of 6
  • Grimwrath Berzerker: 105 Points, Leader 5 of 6
  • 30 Vulkite Berzerkers with Fyresteel Handaxes: 510 Points, Battle line 1 of 3
  • 10 Vulkite Berzerkers with Fyresteel Handaxes: 170 Points, Battleline 2 of 3
  • 30 Vulkite Berzerkers with Bladed Slingshields: 480 Points, Battleline 3 of 3
  • Total 2000 Points

Where the last army was all about the fewest models you can take, this one is all about reinforced units owning the battlefield. It packs a punch, gives you plenty of troops that can take and hold objectives, and you can take a unit and deepstrike them to put pressure on your enemy.

The Runefather can be a great distraction piece or can support any of your berzerkers and help them finish off anything they might not be able to take out in one go. You also have the models to be able to take command of the objectives, though once you start moving forward with one of your big blocks of troops, it’s hard to turn them around so make sure your opponent can not get behind you or tie your unit up.

For my battalion, I am going to take the warlord battalion, because if I were to go with the battle regiment, I am still looking at a three drop army so I think it would be wasted. Getting the bonus enhancement lets us beef up our heroes as well. Starting with the Runefather, I am going to take the Axe of Grimnir, along with the mount trait to the Flame Scale Youngblood to give him a bit more damage potential.

For the command trait, I am going to give my general the Fury of the Fyreslayers to give my units a chance to get into combat all that much quicker. For the bonus enhancement, I am going to give my Grimwrath Berzerker the Draught of Magmalt Ale so that he can turn into a one-man killing machine for a turn and maybe surprise your opponent.

There you have it a list for every lodge, I think they are all fun factions that let you mess around with the army in different ways. I do wish there was a little bit more variety in the models but if half-naked crazed berserkers on fire lizards are what you want, then this book offers it to you.
