All The Latest Star Wars Legion Points Updates & Erratas

Star-Wars-Legion-Logo-rew-rulesDon’t miss all the new Star Wars: Legion FAQs, Erratas, and rules changes- here are the latest updates and where to download them.

For the first time in a while, we’ve been getting a ton of new Star Wars releases, and we’re excited about it. Let’s start by checking out the latest updates for Star Wars Legion!

More Star Wars: Legion Rules Updates On the Way (June 7th, 2023)

You can see all the changes from AMG here. Just keep in mind these are on AMG’s site but are not effective until 6/15/23. However, if you’re playing some casual games, you could easily get some practice in with the new rules! Let’s jump into the changes.

In conjunction with our STAR WARS: Legion Points Update doc, we’ve added an updated Rulebook, Errata, and Blizzard Force docs.

Maybe the most significant changes came for Blizzard Force, as many people wondered how the force would work with the new changes. There was also a point increase on choke and a change to the card, which has some people up in arms…

Either way, let’s jump into some of the changes.

Star Wars Legion Rules Updates

This might be the most significant change that people are upset about, as this, combined with the points increase, hits Force Choke hard, but it’s still probably viable, just a little worse.

Star Wars LEgion updates

Next up, they took Operative Vader out as an option, but other than that, this looks pretty similar.

Star Wars Legion Movement Rules 3They also made some changes to the core rules, but if you remember, back in December 2022, they made a pretty big change to a lot of the rules, so nothing too crazy this time around. If you want to see all those big changes, you can check that out here.

Star Wars Legion Points Update (June 6th, 2023)

This has been a little delayed, but let’s hope that means AMG took a closer look at what really needed to be balanced instead of rushing it out. From the looks of it, people seem pretty happy overall with the changes.

Just keep in mind these are on AMG’s site but are not effective until 6/15/23. However, if you’re playing some casual games, you could easily get some practice in with the new rules! Let’s jump into the changes.

The changes come from AMG’s website.

Star Wars Legion Points UpdateThe Galactic Empire gets some pretty balanced adjustments, with six decreases and four increases. Maybe the biggest is the Heavy Response Unit going up by 10 points (which is a 33% increase).

However, they had some significant decreases in upgrades, and the Bo-Rifle went down by 10 points, so it might actually make more people play it.

This is decent, as it doesn’t kill the highly competitive and popular Blizzard Force, but they do get some increases in points.

Rebel Alliance Star Wars Legion Point Changes

Star Wars Legion Points Update 2The Rebel Alliance has been a little weak as of late, and AMG gave them all point decreases! So, if you play the Rebels, you will be happy with these changes. Lando gets the most significant drop in terms of characters, and Tauntauns also get a decent decrease (5 points).

The rebels also got a ton of decreases for upgrades too.

Galactic Republic Star Wars Legion Point Changes

Star Wars Legion Points Update 3The Galactic Republic also only got point decreases this go around.  These look to be some of the biggest overall, with multiple upgrades going down by 15 points. Then, Arc Troopers get a 6 points decrease, and the TX 130 goes down by 10 points.

So, it looks like you’ll be able to squeeze in a few more units with the changes, and maybe we’ll actually see Arcs on the table for once!

Separatist Alliance Star Wars Legion Point Changes

Star Wars Legion Points Update 4The Separatists also get decreases across the board, with both Dooku and Grievous (a double decrease with his upgrades) getting their points cut!

Unfortunately, Boba Fett goes up by ten points, and the Black Sun Enforcers also go up in points (and the upgrade goes up by 3 points). However, Swoop Bikers and Gar Saxon go down in points.

Just to note, the Mag-Det Enforcer does go up in points even though the points are not blue.

Star Wars Legion Upgrades Point Changes

Star Wars Legion Points Update 5Last but not least, Force choke doubles in price (5 to 10, but still worth it), and the Quad Laser Cannon goes down by 3 points.

We’ll know soon if this new points update was enough for other factions to seize the day and rise up against the stranglehold that Blizzard Force has on the competitive scene currently!

AMG Drops New Star Wars: Legion Core Rulebook (January, 16th 2023)

They have previewed changes for a while now, but AMG has dropped the new Star Wars: Legion Core Rulebook for free!

We were a little nervous that AMG would go the other route and actually charge for the reworked rules, so it’s nice just to see the download for free! There are a decent number of changes; however, nothing is in red for changes, so we’ll cover some of the changes here, but be sure to read through the whole thing to get all the new Star Wars Legion rule changes.

If you want to read all the rules they already previewed, you can check those out here.

MG Updates Star Wars: Legion Rules & Change Log: (January 21st, 2023)

According to AMG, this is the Changelog for the 2.5 edition of the rules released on January 16th, 2023.

Star Wars Legion rules changes

We definitely like how they are actually doing the changes like this, where they have a change log on their forum.  We’re not sure if this is exactly how they will do it in the future, but it’s nice to see everything changing!

For now, though, these are all the updates. While it seems like a lot, AMG says its really just to smooth out gameplay. From the comments, it really seemed like people wanted more clarification than anything, so nothing too crazy.

As we receive and answer Star Wars: Legion rules questions, we will periodically issue a new version of the Core Rule Book containing fixes and clarifications

However, anytime a company is willing to give the rules out for free and keep them updated, we’re all for it!

AMG Drops New Star Wars: Legion Core Rulebook & Rules Changes: (January 16th, 2023)

Star Wars Legion Core Rulebook

The book seems to be better laid out than before, which is nice. However, sometimes, there seems to be something without context, and then they come back to it a few pages later. Still, we do think it has a better layout overall. Here are some key things changing:

  • Better layout
  • Keywords are broken up into sections
  • Cover has changed a little
  • Ewoks are mercenaries
  • Clamber is gone
  • Panic and suppression have a ton of changes
  • Covert ops took a big hit
  • Passing rules are added in
  • Line of Sight has been updated (to really make more sense)
  • Tons of points have been updated (in a different document, which you can download here)
  • 3D printed minis statement

We’ll take a closer look at some of the changes below, but, real quickly, they did make an official statement on using AMG minis as part of the Galactic Conquest Event Rules.

You can play with kitbashed models as long as most of the bits are from AMG. 3D printed models will not be allowed at AMG-sponsored tournaments.

Tokens can be outsourced; just be sure to check with your TO. However, that being said, at most smaller tournaments, we hope the TOs won’t really care about 3D-printed minis and parts.   This seems to be something to consider if you’re going to a tournament.

You can download the rulebook here, but we’ll take a closer look at some of the changes below.

New Movement Rules Announced for Star Wars Legion: December 21st, 2022

Movement is obviously a critical factor in the game, so we’ll have to see how this shakes things up. Let’s take a closer look. This rules change preview is from the December 21st Transmission.

Star Wars Legion Movement Rules

While the basic mechanics of movement in Legion will be quite familiar to veteran players, there was one item that throughout our observation and playtesting we found to be quite unintuitive in how it affected gameplay. By the letter of the current rules, when a miniature moves, it is required to move down the movement tool with its base centered on the tool. Through strict interpretation and application, this system meant that more often than not units would be “trapped” when hugging tight to terrain like building corners or barricades, because the placement of the tool and the requirement of moving the base down the center resulted in the miniature not being able to round the corner of the building. Instead, the movement rules would require the miniature to take a wide turn to ensure its base did not contact the side of the building. In our observations both internally and externally, no one applied this rule correctly, and instead moved their miniatures based on a common sense approach, assuming the intent was to allow a miniature to move tightly around corners and other areas.

It looks like they want to push the game to newer players by simplifying a lot of the rules. We’ll have to wait for all the changes to make a final judgment, but it doesn’t seem like it should make the game too different.

Star Wars Legion Movement Rules 2

Therefore, we have altered the rules on how small-based miniatures interact with the movement tool so that the moving miniature is simply picked up and placed centered over the movement tool instead. This not only allows for intuitive movement, but it also maintains the importance of the movement tool placement as in the original rules with the tool itself being a strict guide to the miniature’s final position. The movement of miniatures on notched bases remains unchanged.

As we said, this should make it much easier for newer players to move their units around effectively, so it’s probably a good change.

High Ground & Climbing Changes

Star Wars Legion Movement Rules 3

There was another part of the movement rules we knew we wanted to address to make the battlefield more dynamic and exciting, while eliminating cumbersome and unintuitive rules language. Navigating vertical terrain has changed to allow players more freedom to explore and bring elevation to their games of Legion, even for units that don’t have the Jump keyword. Clambering has been eliminated from the game, and abilities or cards that involve climbing or clambering like Expert Climber or Scale have been revisited. Units may now move over obstacle terrain shorter than the height of their silhouette with no penalty. If the terrain is taller than their silhouette, the unit must use a climb movement to move up, onto, or over it. A climb is a speed 1 move that allows the unit to also move a vertical distance up to height 1.

This seems like a decent change and, again, easier for newer players. We’ll have to see what and if profiles change to work with this.

Star Wars Legion Movement Rules 4

In our playtests, opening the “High Ground” to all armies allowed for some very exciting tactics and emergent strategies, as well as really unleashing players’ imaginations to create and utilize exciting new terrain setups that added to the game experience rather than hindering it.

It should make more units viable by giving more units access to the high ground. We’ll also have to see how jetpacks interact with this because it could make them seriously valuable. If they could make a normal move straight up instead of the speed-1 tool, they could be useful regarding things like Line of Sight, scoring, etc.

New Suppression Rules Announced for Star Wars Legion: December 19th, 2022

walker Star Wars Legion

This comes from the December 14th Transmission.

suppression rules

While working on the Core Rulebook and other future developments for Star Wars: Legion, we realized that the suppression and panic mechanics were not delivering the desired impact on the game, especially when it came to objective play and Legion’s scenario scoring conditions. In too many situations, the player’s only option for denying or securing victory points was to outright eliminate the entire enemy unit, because suppression and panic did not affect the unit’s ability to score. Additionally, the intended functionality of panic was at odds with the written rule’s language, leading to ambiguity and problematic interactions.

It’s always cool to get a few more mechanics to stop people from scoring because just having to eliminate the whole unit is quite annoying sometimes.

So, it should be an interesting change.

suppression rules 2

Panic has now been reworked to increase its importance in scenario play and give players additional options for counterplay beyond simply trying to eliminate all miniatures in a unit. When a unit panics it no longer flees from the battlefield. This removes a large amount of ambiguity and deeper rules issues with regards to precisely how players resolve a panicking units’ movement. Now, when a unit panics, it simply cannot perform actions or free actions. Additionally, a panicking unit drops any objective tokens they may be carrying. Then, at the end of their activation, they remove a number of suppression tokens equal to their courage value. Most importantly for many scenarios, units that are panicked cannot be used to satisfy the victory conditions on objective cards. So that lone remaining trooper that’s dug in behind heavy cover with a pile of dodge tokens can now be eliminated from the scenario by the proper application of suppression and panic.

This will make high courage units more useful as they can take away more suppression tokens. Then for scoring, you just have to get a unit to panic and they can’t score the objective!

Passing Rules for Star Wars Legion: (December 14, 2022)

This announcement comes from the latest AMG Transmission.

Star Wars Legion Passing Rules

Throughout the entirety of Legion’s history, armies with fewer activations have struggled against armies with a much higher number of activations. Lower activation armies were forced to either stay in place or engage a much more numerous foe that could “bide its time” by continuously activating “filler” units. We wanted to find a way to even the playing field between armies with a large difference in activations and give lower-activation armies a bit of a boost. Not only would this allow for greater player creativity and agency when it comes to building their armies, it also allows the Factions in Legion to better lean into some of the elements that make them unique, thus opening up even more interesting diversity on the tabletop.

Our solution is perhaps the biggest change of all in the Core Rulebook, and it was a key focus of a huge amount of our playtesting and development work over the last year: a new Pass mechanic has been added to the game. During the Activation Phase, a player may choose to Pass and skip their turn once per round if their opponent has more remaining orders.

Implementing the Pass mechanic in a way that hit a balance between keeping Activation count a potent advantage, but not overwhelming, was an arduous road filled with plenty of pitfalls and lessons learned. Passing allows smaller activation forces to be on a more equal footing through their superior abilities and skills, and not be overwhelmed by a large army of lesser-trained troops.

This is a cool change and something the game needed. It shouldn’t break the game but should make it feel more balanced for elite armies. Larger armies too often just overwhelmed the elite ones. We’ll see how this plays out, but it should, in theory, be a good mechanic. It sounds like they went through a lot of playtesting, so let’s hope it helps the game a lot!

Plus, who doesn’t love taking a bit more meat in their lists, especially after the recently announced points increases?

Star Wars Legion Line of Sight Rules Update & Rulebook Announced: December 12th, 2022

This comes from the latest transmission from Atomic Mass Games. Let’s get into the changes!

Let’s start with the Line of Sight rules, then jump into the new rulebook. since this is their announcement, we’ll let them tell you more about it:

Star Wars Legion Line of Sight Rules

The first of these updated/codifications we are going to cover today is Line of Sight (LOS) and silhouettes. Line of Sight (LOS) and silhouettes have been revisited and clarified to be the same between the tournament and core rules. Previously, LOS was drawn from the head of a miniature or a specific point on a vehicle, and players had to determine if miniatures had 50% of their silhouette obscured. Emplacement Troopers and Creature Troopers also had silhouettes based on the size of the miniature instead of using a standard silhouette.

Star Wars Legion Line of Sight Rules 2

We wished to clarify this and make it easier for players to determine what their miniatures can and cannot see. There are now two standard silhouettes for all trooper miniatures- miniatures in units with small bases all use the same silhouette, and miniatures in units with notched bases all use the same silhouette.

Star Wars Legion Line of Sight Rules 3

Vehicles now have a silhouette from their base to the top of their hull that does not include parts like weapons, antennae, or crew members. This change ensures players no longer have to worry about their Spider Droid’s antennae making it impossible for them to remain hidden, and eliminates the silliness of being able to adjust a vehicles silhouette by moving its turret or positioning its weapons in a specific way.

Star Wars Legion Line of Sight Rules 4

There were certain nuances of terrain blocking LOS that were not intuitive for players. Certain placement of miniatures allowed the “sniping” of heavy weapons or specific characters from units. Which miniatures in a unit can have wounds allocated to them has changed – wounds may now be allocated to any miniature in a unit, not just ones that are in the attacker’s LOS. However, wounds must still be allocated to wounded miniatures first, so no spreading out wounds across multiple Wookiees! This change de-emphasizes some finicky nature of LOS and cover and allows players to be more relaxed with miniature placement.

Star Wars Legion Line of Sight Rules 5

Additionally the rules for which miniatures can suffer wounds from an attack have also been adjusted: Now, when a unit suffers wounds from an attack, if the attacker has LOS to only some of the miniatures in the defending unit, the defending unit cannot suffer wounds greater than the total wound threshold of miniatures that are in LOS.

New Rulebook for Star Wars: Legion

star-wars-legion-boba-fett-daimyo

Since the beginning, Legion has broken its rules up over two important documents, the Legion Learn to Play and the Legion Rules Reference Guide (oft referred to as the RRG). While it is true that these documents do provide all the information players need in order to conduct grand battles in a galaxy far, far away, as the game has grown the initial benefits that once existed for new players of splitting information up has largely disappeared. Instead, with the significant growth of the game and alongside it the RRG, the current rules documents for Legion present far more of a hinderance, especially to new players, as they have to navigate a reference document in lieu of a linear and logical presentation of game and rules concepts that leads players through all the information they need in order to confidently learn and understand the game. With this new rulebook, we have worked exceptionally hard to create a single document that teaches players the game in an intuitive fashion that ensures they will have all of the core rules of Legion by the time they reach the final page.

We would like to see this, as having one place where you can find all the rules is nice. Plus, this lets them look back through the rules and actually update them, which is nice to see the continued support for Legion.

Grogu and Mando

While creating a fully modernized Core Rulebook for Legion we also had the opportunity to really dig into the previous rules language. As with all rules sets, time and experience are incredible teachers and often expose areas where rules language fails or is unclear in guiding players to intent of the rule. As excited as we were to simply create a Core Rulebook that would make learning the game significantly better for new players, we also knew we had a unique opportunity to really dive in and make sure all the rules were as clear and consistent as possible in the hopes of improving player recall and memory leading to less need for players to return to the core rules during play.

That does it for this one, but they promised to keep the updates coming throughout the end of the year, with a drop of the new rulebook in 2023.

New Star Wars: Legion Points Update: December 8th, 2022

On their Facebook they also promised four days of articles about the updates and upcoming changes. One other thing to note, these go into effect on 1/1/23.

A new points update for Star Wars: Legion has arrived! In addition, players can look forward to a series of four articles outlining the latest rule updates coming in January, dropping 12/12, 12/14, 12/19, 12/21.
Pretty cool to get even more info and changes!

Star Wars Legion Points Update 3

Star Wars Legion Points Update
The Galactic Republic is getting a ton of changes, as well as the mercenaries. This makes sense, as they recently received a decent number of minis and expansions. While the Separatists are only getting two changes this time around (and at least in terms of points, we’ll have to see about the next update).

Star Wars Legion Battle Force Rules Updates: July 8th, 2022

They show how to assemble each force, so let’s check out how to build each one, starting with the Shadow Collective, coming from AMG.

Shadow collective

Like all battle forces, the Shadow Collective has a slightly different set of rank requirements. However, the Shadow Collective is unique in that mercenary units DO count towards minimum rank requirements–which is good, since the Shadow Collective is full of them! A Shadow Collective battle force must include at least 1 commander and at least 2 corps units. Because the Shadow Collective is made up of tough and well-trained mercenaries like Mandalorians Super Commandos, the maximum number of special forces units allowed is higher than normal at 4. And no force would be complete without several members of the most infamous rogue’s gallery in the galaxy, several of which need no introduction. To reflect this, players may field a maximum of 4 commanders or operatives in their Shadow Collective army.

It’s nice you basically get 4 separate factions, but they count towards your minimum rank requirements, meaning you don’t really need to just throw them in randomly.

Shadow collective 2

The Black Sun are tough, short-ranged fighters who excel at stopping their opposition with volleys of Precise blaster fire. Failing that, their scatter guns and explosives make short work of anyone who dares to defy their enforcers. The Pyke Syndicate prefer fighting from afar, using their agility to dodge even the heaviest of attacks. Should they be unable to Outmaneuver their foes, their acute Danger Sense will keep them safe.

Ultimately, however, the Black Sun and Pykes are in it for the money, valuing their own Self Preservation over their objectives. When these two corps units aren’t enough, it’s time to send in the Mandalorians. These highly trained Super Commandos are ready to Jump into the fray and Defend Maul’s Shadow Collective. Their Beskar armor makes them all but Impervious to enemy attacks, and their host of advanced weaponry provides them with the tools to take on any foe. If your Mandalorian special forces need some support, the Raiders provide vehicular Reinforcements to the Shadow Collective with their gangs of Swoop Bike Riders and A-A5 Speeder Trucks. While they pale in comparison to the heavy armor of more formal militaries, the Shadow Collective’s vehicles are still quite effective and can perform the role of Field Commander if necessary.

All the units inside seem to gell pretty well with each other, and if nothing else, this is just a super fun force to bring to the table. Even if some of them are in it just for the money, they will still love you for painting them, don’t worry.

Shadow collective 3

Should the need arise, Maul, himself can take to the field, forging mere Allies of Convenience into an effective fighting force. With the Darksaber and Juyo Mastery, Maul is more than capable of eliminating whatever stands between him and the throne.

Separatist Invasion Force:

Star Wars rulesWith just the box itself, you can make a pretty impressive force, but you can also take a ton of really cool commanders in this one.

Star Wars rulesThey also have the cards for free which is just super nice, even though you do get them for free in the box too in printed form!

501st Legion Battle Force:

Star Wars rules 2This force is perfect if you want Anakin to pilot your forces and cut through your enemies.

Star Wars rules 3Obviously, with Anakin or Rex leading them, your units get much better!

Echo Base Defenders Battle Force:

Star Wars rules 4This force can have some of the most iconic characters around, in one of the most iconic battles! You can take Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewy. Pretty hard to beat that!

Star Wars rules 5The cards also make perfect sense with the setting and getting all your corps +1 aim, and additional standby tokens is always strong.

Blizzard Force Battle Force:

Star Wars rules 6Vader makes up a big part of this force, but it also is just super heavy on the Snowtroopers. Which is cool and obviously, you can take some walkers!

Star Wars rules 7They are grabbing a bunch of new cards with plenty of buffs for your troopers!

Star Wars: Legion Shadow Collective Rules Updates

Shadow collectives rulesStarting with how you can build the battle force. Normally you can’t build full mercenary armies, however, this is one of the battle forces that allows you to do that. Plus, they update the loyalties here.

Shadow collectives rules 2You have a decent range of units you can take; obviously, everything in the box can be used for a single force. It’s fairly normal other than every unit included must be mercenaries. Plus, you only have Black sun Enforces and Syndicate Foot Soldiers for your corps, and you must include at least one of those in your force. Some people are upset about no Fett in the force, but it doesn’t really make sense with the lore, so hey, sorry about that. You can download the whole thing here.

Now, let’s check out all the big changes to the game and where you can download the rules for free.
