8 Different Ways To Paint Yellow Miniatures: Painting Tutorial

Painting Yellow featurePeachy is back with another awesome painting tutorial; this time, he’s showing eight different ways to paint yellow on miniatures.

Peachy has recently joined the Painting Phase and started making excellent YouTube tutorials! They also have a really cool Patreon, so if you want to show some extra support and get great rewards, go check that out by clicking here!

This week, he’s focusing on a color many people struggle with, but it should be easy with these steps (and multiple strategies)! Let’s see how to do it.

8 Different Ways To Paint Yellow Miniatures: Painting Tutorial

Painting YellowHe will be painting Puppetswar minis from their Patreon this time, so be sure to check them out, as they have some amazing minis and STL files!

Strategy 1:

Painting Yellow 2This is the simplest one! He sprayed the whole model in Sunset Yellow, AK Pretorian Yellow, or Daemonic Yellow from the Army Painter. And that’s it! Just paint the rest of the details around it, and you have a half-decent yellow.

Strategy 2:

Painting Yellow 3Now, if you only have a black spray at home, he starts with watered-down Averland Sunset in a few coats. This will look decent, but it takes a lot of time. Like with the model before, you then go back in and color the rest of the details!

Strategy 3:

Painting Yellow 4Now, we’re getting into more Grimdark style. He starts by heavily drybrushing Averland Sunset over all the textured areas. This has built-in shading, is super fast, and will get you a decent yellow.

Strategy 4:

Painting Yellow 5Now, we’re getting into contrast paints. This is best suited over a white undercoat; for the color, we will be using Imperial Fist Contrast. This method is quick and looks amazing with minimal effort. You simply just apply this all over; just be careful about pulling. If you need yellow, this is just so fast and easy.

Just know this is very bright compared to the spray.

Strategy 5:

Painting Yellow 6Now, it’s time for an airbrush; you use the same colors as above; keep in mind you’ll lose the contrast effect, but it is still very vibrant and easy. All you have to do is spray the whole model.

Strategy 6:

Painting Yellow 7This method he got from eBay Miniature rescue and Goobertown Hobbies. You start with a pink primer (he used Pixie Pink from AP) and then white zenithal spray afterward. Once dry, he waters down Imperial Fist with water 50/50. This makes the pink an orange-type color and the white a nice yellow.

You can also just drybrush on the white if you don’t have an airbrush or rattle can. Overall it is pretty quick and gives you a much different look.

Strategy 7:

Painting Yellow 8He starts with a black undercoat and sprays Phalanx Yellow over the top with the airbrush; he really doesn’t like this method as it takes so many coats and doesn’t look that impressive.

Strategy 8:

Painting Yellow 9This time, they are going with the stippling technique inspired by Richard Gray. First, you stipple on watered-down Mournfang Brown (about three coats). Next, you take Zamessi Desert, do about three coats of it, and finish it with Yriel Yellow. After that, he applies Darkoath Flesh contrast paint to the whole thing and, to finish it off, hits some glazing with Yriel Yellow to bring out the yellow in raised areas.

Applying Shades to Yellow:

Painting Yellow 10Some of the models already sort of have a shade, but for the ones that don’t, we’re going to spice them up a little. He’s going to start with an all-over shade of Fuegan Yellow. Once it’s dried, you’ll have to go back and bring the punch back; this model he’s using is the Averland Sunset model, so that’s the color he’s going with.

Painting Yellow 11Next up is recessed shading. This seems to take longer at first, but you don’t have to do as much cleaning up. He uses the same color and hits the recesses instead of the whole model.

Painting Yellow 12Now, we’re going to highlight. There are a few ways to do this: either drybrush the model or edge highlight. The next thing to consider is the color; you can use a bone color or a yellow highlight. It really just depends on the look you want.

There you have it, a bunch of ways to paint yellow! Be sure to check out the video below for all the details.
