How to Paint Rough Riders: Army Painter Masterclass Tutorial

Painting Rough Riders 2Thomas, from the Army Painter, will be painting up the minis from the recent Victoria Miniatures Kickstarter, which you can check out here! They will be hitting shelves in November 2023, so if you want amazing calvary, don’t miss out. Now, let’s jump into how to paint the minis.

Step 1:

paint how to Rough Riders 2He starts by spraying the model white and applying Fur Brown on the horse. Next up, he breaks out the airbrush and sprays the legs and underbelly with Tyrian Navy; you can get it on the other parts, but spray from below to create some shadow.

To push the highlights, he then sprays from the top down with Hobgoblin Hue, focusing on the raised areas and places most hit by light. Then to unify your colors, water down Monster Brown into a glaze and hit the horse with this. To reinforce the highlights, mix Fur Brown with Skeleton Bone and highlight the most raised areas.

Lastly, to finish off the horse’s coat, he does another glaze, but this time with Crusted Sore and Pure Red mix.

Step 2:

Now, onto another glaze, this time with Phoenix Flames.

Step 3:

paint how to Rough Riders 5He’s jumping around a bit here; for the saddle and the pack, he does a few coats with Brainmatter Beige and does the same for the scarf. Once dry, he does a Strong Tone Wash on all the areas just painted.

Then paint the lance black. He then applies a highlight to the cloth with Matt White. Now, back to the lance, he thins down some black and washes the grenade tip to give it a gray color and then paints some shadow tones on the lance with Deep Blue.

To highlight this, he uses Wolf Grey and a final focused highlight of Matt White. He also applies a final glaze highlight of Matt White on the lance shaft.

Step 4:

paint how to Rough Riders 6Thomas starts this step by glazing the saddle with Fur Brown and applying a very simple highlight with Matt White to the saddle pack. Next up, he free hands on a checker pattern on the saddle using Crusted Sore. To do this, he draws out his lines and then just fills the colors in.

He then highlights the red with Chaotic Red and then Pure Red. For the face of the rider, he basecoats it with Tanned Flesh and picks out the raised areas with Barbarian Flesh. If you want to add facial hair, he mixes Deep Blue with Mummy Robes and simply paints it where a beard would be. Once dry, he thins down Garnet Pigment Toner and glazes around the eyes and mouth. With Mummy Robes, he picks out the final details on the face.
