Lots of new talk over the weekend about new Space Marine models for 8th edition that may be coming with the Death Guard we have already seen!

The rumor mongers have been pretty quiet as of late, but it seems like the silence may be broken. Since we drew attention what looks to be a picture of the new 40k Starter set minis two days ago, the internet has exploded with all sorts of CSI bigfoot breakdowns and rumors about when and what is supposedly coming for 8th edition 40k.

Remember kids, these are all RUMORS,  so don’t forget to add salt.

Just two people playing 40k? Let’s take a closer look…

8th Edition StarterLet’s take a look at the zoomed in version of the same pic. Those Ultramarine colors really start standing out!

Sure it’s blurry but those models look very tall if they are on 32mm bases don’t they?

But that’s only half of the starter, who are they fighting?8th Edition Starter Close UpWell the easy-ish way to find out is to zoom in a little more. When you do so you see this very uniquely shaped mini right in the center. Have we seen any of those shapes before?

And that’s when the internet went nuts:

First off Mini Wars had this to say:

Warhammer 40k 8th pre-orders go live on June 3 and goes on retail sale on June 17, the starter box for two players typical of all editions will be Ultramarines (new rescheduling) vs Death Guard.
We have time to save XD

Then we saw a CSI bigfoot breakdown of the image above from Elric over on La Voz de Horus:

But what if we already had a picture of one of the new plague drones and we had not been able to locate it? DeadFingers left the photo that could be a sample of the two armies of the new starter box:

And BoLS chimed in with the following release rumors as well about the other side of that starter set, even more new Space Marines:

The Boxed Set Contents

Latest rumors building on yesterday’s set say look for this:

Initial pre-orders June 3rd, or June 17th (conflicting info)

  • Ultramarines vs Death Guard
  • $120
  • Chaos Cultists
  • Death Guard Plague Marines
  • Death Guard Terminators
  • Chaos Lord
  • Nurgle Drones
  • Mairne Tactical Squads
  • Assault squad
  • Devastator Squad
  • Librarian
  • Captain
  • Gameplay accessories (dice, tokens etc…)
  • Rulebook (softcover)
  • Campaign book w/missions

So how accurate is this exactly? We can’t say one way or the other, but don’t think this is the last rumor surrounding a release date or the contents of the new starter set. In the Big Release Dates article we put out back in February there were two dates in May, and three in June:

  • May 6th & 20th.
  • June 3rd, 10th, & 17th.

So we still don’t know what they have planned for May or June, so both months are a possibility. Does Mr. Muñoz actually have some inside information? Is the release going to be June 17th with a 2 week pre-order window.

Now consider this: Multiple sources have revealed to Spikey Bits that Warhammer Corporate stores have two days of 40k activities planned for May 6th and 13th, but we have no further details on if those are 8th edition 40k related OR perhaps something for the 40k Anniversary of the White Dwarf.

Will Games Workshop be able to keep up with their claim to putting out news every single day leading up to the release? Is the new starter box going to be Ultramarines vs Death Guard?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
