Adepticon is just around the corner and with it the Long War Doubles tournament to keep bringing the hobby back to gaming in 2018.

The Long War Doubles pits teams of two against each other in three rounds of amazing battles. The missions are very unique, set up for the doubles tournament, and will involve more than simply tabling your opponent. Along with the games, teams are scored for their hobby love and sportsmanship.

Take a look at this summary of what to expect, and look forward to, in the 2018 Adepticon Bringing Hobby Back tournament!

Teams

This is a social, team event that brings people together for fun games and celebration of the hobby. Teams are composed of two players, each with their own 1000 point-battle forged army that can stand on its own. This is limited to two detachments per player. The same army must be used throughout the tournament, including all relics and the chosen warlord, who is from one of the teams. Named characters are unique for the team (only one Celestine can be played per team, for example). Command points are pooled for the entire team, based on how many you bring for each detachment. All stratagems can only be used once per phase but, if keywords are correct, they can be used on either part of the team’s force.

Missions

The three missions for Adepitcon involve various goals, and playing to each of these missions is important for final scores.

The first mission, Choose Wisely, involves prioritizing three objectives: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Each team will be picking different priority objectives that may, or may not, be the same as the other team. Playing to your opponent’s weaknesses and your army’s strengths is key to success here. Emperor’s Will involves controlling an objective marker that is placed in each players deployment zone. Purge the Alien involves defeating more power levels than your opponent. Crusade involves controlling any of three objective markers placed outside the deployment zones.

The second mission, Somebody Set Us Up The Bomb!, involves planting a bomb in the enemy command post and preventing the enemy from doing the same. The bombs are marked by two objective markers, set up just outside each player’s deployment zone. They can be carried by any non-character model, move 12″ maximum, and must remain out of combat in order to arm the bomb.

The last mission, The Floor is Lava (also known as Get to the Choppa!), involves finding the activated portal and escaping the crumbling planet. Portals are indicated by three objective markers in the center of the playing field, but only one can be active at a time – indicated by the roll of a D3, starting on turn two, to see which teleporter is activated. As well, each turn, 6″ of the end of the battlefield become flooded with lava, destroying any units remaining there and counting as impassible terrain.

Scoring

Scoring out of 100 points consists of Battlepoints (54%), Army Composition (12%), Theme (6%), Appearance (16%), and Preferred Opponent (12%). Battle points are awarded in each round of the tournament for success in missions in the primary, secondary, tertiary, and bonus objectives. The Army Composition score is awarded to each player by their opponent after each match. This is a judge of an opponents force based on how it adhered to a theme and the social contract of the Bringing Hobby Back tournament format. If your list is solely based on exploiting rules and combos…you probably won’t score too high. If your list is geared towards everyone having a good time, you will probably have a higher comp score. Theme is based on army composition score awarded by the tournament judge, following similar criteria to the peer-to-peer army comp score. Preferred Opponent is based on sportsmanship and how much fun it is to have you as an opponent.

Appearance is also known as the painting score but takes into account other aspects of the hobby. This is deciding pure hobby love, and awards points for the army being fully painted to three-color standard or more, and how much extra details have gone into getting the army ready. Display boards and movement trays count in this for additional points…so remember to bring at least a movement tray to get those points!

Errata

Things can change quickly in our hobby and game system. All codex options and Forgeworld units, which are current for 40k, are permitted unless that unit does not have a model. If an FAQ or Codex comes out 2 weeks prior to the tournament, it will not be used. All errata will be used, even if it comes out the same day.

This is the most important rule of all, though: HAVE FUN! Everyone should be enjoying themselves in playing these games we put so much thought and love into. Be sure to join the Long War Doubles on Facebook for more information and connect with other players going to the event! The tournament packet is available to download here.
