GW Shoots Themselves in the Foot Over 10th Edition 40k

10th-Edition-40k-warhammer-rumors-1GW may be setting itself up for failure with 10th Edition 40k with a huge backlash, just like they got from Age of Sigmar.

There have been basically endless rumors about 10th edition of Warhammer 40k, and people are already getting either really excited or quite upset over them. However, the most recent rumors about toughness (we’ll talk about later) seem to have gotten the most blowback for any rules, rumored or otherwise, in a long time.

Before we get into the possible issues, be sure to take a look at all the latest on the new releases and reveals as we dive into the previous rumors in an attempt to divine more 10th edition.

Editorial: GW Shoots Themselves in the Foot Over 10th Edition 40k

The latest rumors seem to indicate the gameplay for 10th Edition will become a lot similar to Age of Sigmar.

Problem is, when GW rolled out AoS back in July of 2015, it was basically a disaster. They got rid of the entire fantasy ruleset, went away from rank and file, and just didn’t do anything to smooth over the transition. People left in droves, and it took a seriously long time to get people actually into the AoS ruleset.

So, if  GW is planning on something as big as getting rid of toughness and multiple waves of models, etc., for Warhammer 40k, we feel like they really need to do a better job on their reveals.

Here is why so much may be riding on it.

There Will Be a Firefight…

Unfortunately, GW just doesn’t do a very good job of actually revealing important details. Almost every time there is a new release, they accidentally “confirm” every rumor with the very first Warhammer Community post.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with confirming a single rumor, the problem is that now confirming just a single rumor confirms all the other rumors out there in some people’s minds, as the GW leaks are so prevalent now!

Just think about that points sheet we saw for World Eaters that had Jakhals on it. At first, the community as a whole thought it was a fake because it had units on there we had never heard of.

Then, all of a sudden, GW confirmed all the units for World Eaters, and people went crazy over all the World Eaters rumors out there, just assuming they were all true now…

So now, hearing that there will be no toughness, multiple waves for new armies, Indexes, etc., in 10th Edition Warhammer 40k, hobbyists are already getting upset.

The problem is that if Games Workshop confirms just even one shred of any of these rumors, it could send hobbyists into a frenzy of confirmation bias that may have dire results on everything from customer attrition right down to the GW stock price.

Plus, who remembers the colossal debacle that was the 9th Edition Indomitus box set release?

Any way you look at it, Games Workshop has to make sure they release all information better for 10th edition 40k.

Multiple Waves of Releases For New Armies

So we have heard rumors that new armies (Votann, World Eaters, and Imperial Guard) will receive multiple waves of models and updated codexes fairly early on.

This, again, is frustrating. but it could be great because who doesn’t want new models? The problem is all of those players just bought the codex ($55) and built an army around the current models.

So, if you have to buy two codexes within six months to a year, you could be spending $110 on just rules to play the army, then they will most likely make the newer models better in terms of rules, so you’ll be tempted to buy them.

As we said, getting new minis is always awesome; it really just depends on how GW does the rollout and maybe somehow rolls out free rules on the app or something with your old book code.

Huge Rule Changes

This is probably the biggest part of the possible issue. When we look at how they rolled out AoS, they did a terrible job, if we’re being honest. Now, if they actually take out toughness from the game, it would be one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in 40k in years.

We understand they want games to play faster, but if they don’t do a good job of introducing changes like this, people will potentially be very mad. Remember, these are all just rumors right now, so don’t get too upset.

gw sorry andy eddieGoing forward, we hope that Games Workshop is very clear and concise with what we will and won’t see from 10th edition 40k and avoids any issues with the actual retail rollout of the products that we, unfortunately, saw with 9th edition (as well as recently with new release items in 2023).

Anyway, you look at it; GW should not make any drastic changes to Warhammer 40k without real fanfare via clear and concise announcements.

People are already upset, so let’s see how Games Workshop handles the big gameplay changes and reveals…
