Do you need more hobby motivation? Don’t miss one hobbyist’s look back at his 2019 new year’s resolutions, and bold predictions for the rest of the year!
The days are longer, the weather is getting hotter, and we are all cranking on that old AC unit and hoping it turns on for the year. We are at the halfway point of 2019 (I can’t believe it is here already) and it is time to look back at our new years hobby resolutions and see how we are doing.
- Resolution 1 Playing at Least 2 Games a Month: I am certainly on target for this one, sometimes I am even playing 3-4 games a month! I found a local group that is 5 minutes from my house, and it makes going to their place for games a piece of cake. The bonus, it being at a friend’s house, is we can bring whatever beverages and snacks and we know everyone well. It makes it a lot easier to go there and relax rather than a crowded game store that is half an hour away. I see this continuing for the rest of this year. On Track!
- Resolution 2 Build a 2000 Point Nighthaunt Army and Display Board: This has been my main goal for the year and the airbrush has helped immensely! (see my beginners airbrushing articles) Currently, I am sitting at almost 1800 points of painted Nighthaunts, with my finale battleline unit of 30 Grimghasp Reapers being the last unit I need painting (pre-2019 Generals Handbook). After that I already have some trees and ruins painted up for the display board so I will just need to make one which shouldn’t be too hard. On Track!
- Resolution 3 Use an Airbrush as much as Possible: I use my airbrush every time I paint my models at least a little bit now. (see this article for my airbrush review) I love having it and it is a huge time saver and is great for getting those first coats down. I will say I wish I could do more detail work with it but that might be a goal for a new year. On Track!
- Resolution 4 Paint more Models than you Buy: So, this one is tricky as I have bought quite a few to complete my Nighthaunt army. I have a lot of Nighthaunts left to paint even beyond my 2000 points though so that has started to taper off. That being said by the end of this year I expect I will still have more models than when I started unpainted, so I need to start working on my backlog. Off Track!
- Resolution 5 Play more Underworlds and get Through Silver Tower: This has been a crazy year and I have been playing a ton of Age of Sigmar with a good gaming group. They, however, have no interest in Warhammer Underworlds. On top of that, I am a husband and a father to a 2.5-year-old daughter, and we are expecting a second child this November. (Hurray and Gulp!) This is going to leave very little free time for me to do things like get out and play tabletop games where I can’t keep an eye on a 2.5-year-old and a baby strapped to my back. Thus, I decided to sell my Underworlds and Silver Tower stuff. It’s just way too hard to balance more than one game for me and really my first love in this hobby is Age of Sigmar (My gaming group is excited about Warcry though!). Off the Rails and Not Coming Back!
Well that makes 3 Resolutions on Track and it could be 4 if I can work on some of the blocks of troops done before the end of the year. With there no going back to Resolution 5 I decided to create a 5b if you will that I can work towards.
- Resolution 5b Stay current in the lore: Previously I wrote an article describing the lore up until now, (it’s a couple of months old but can see it here) but I want to continue reading and listening to audiobooks to stay current. Thus, my plan is to read or listen to at least 1 book a month from the Age of Sigmar universe to stay up to date on everything.
There we have it 5 Resolutions that with some dedicated hobby time I can certainly meet, especially if I continue improving with the airbrush. Not to mention those fancy new contrast paints might speed things along a little bit as well…
Moving along let’s see if I hit the mark on any of my 2019 predictions yet.
- Guess 1 was there will be a Kill Team or Mordheim like setting for Age of Sigmar this year: See Warcry so it is certainly looking like I nailed that one. On the Money!
- Guess 2 was there will be more tomes like Legions of Nagash and Beastmen combing armies: I certainly got this with the Skaven (who are broken please fix this book GW) but that is it right now. They have hinted at others but until now it has been standalone battletomes like Fyreslayers, Gloomspite Gitz, etc. Still with the Skaven book being released I am calling this one a win for the good guys and hopefully, we will have a couple more! On the Money!
- Guess 3 was summer campaign focused in the Realm of Light and Shadow: Nothing yet and Forbidden Power was in the Realm of Death so looking like I misread the tea leaves on this one. Bankrupt!
- Guess 4 was the GHB 2019 would combine older armies into newer and that you will see some reworking of older battletomes: Well we are halfway there with the remake of Flesh Eater Courts and Fyreslayers, but I haven’t seen the GHB 2019 yet so going to just take half a win here. Half and Half!
- Guess 5 was new Aelf factions (one light and one shadow), new Slaves to Darkness, and a new Death army outside of Nagash’s control: Nothing yet so going to have to take the loss here unless GW really surprises us this fall… Bankrupt!
- Bonus Guess was Warhammer underworlds season 3 warbands: As nothing from season 3 has been announced yet, this one is still up in the air.
Well there you have it, looks like I am On the Money for a couple of these and the jury is still out on a couple of others. I really did hope GW would move on from the realm of Death that was last year’s base, but it seems like they want to sell more Death models so are sticking around. For kicks and giggles based off of what we know now here is a couple more bonus guesses based on rumors that I think might happen this year.
- Bonus Guess 2: Warcry will come out and be a huge success and GW will release terrain kits for it in a similar way they released them for Kill Team.
- Bonus Guess 3: The being released at the end of Forbidden Power is some sort of Vampire and that will be the new Death faction for the year. (Soulblight)
- Bonus Guess 4: In order, the remaining battletomes to be reworked as promised from Age of Sigmar 1 will be (doesn’t include Sylvaneth): Everchosen (STD), Seraphon, Ironjawz, Free Peoples, Disciples of Tzeentch, Beastclaw Raiders, and then Kharadron Overlords.
That’s it from me back to the kiddie pool to stay cool this summer. Hopefully, you guys are meeting your hobby resolutions for the year!
Let me know what ones you are or are not making as well as your best guesses as to what GW could have in store for us the rest of this year!
