These 3 40k army lists took the Fight Before Christmas GT 40k tournament meta by surprise. It’s fun to bring homebrews that give top armies a run for their money.
The top 3 lists from the Fight Before Christmas GT were covered earlier. But now it’s time to look at the lists that took some players by surprise. Although these lists aren’t exactly considered “meta”, they didn’t do half bad and used units that we hardly ever see on the table.
Thanks to Best Coast Pairings, we can look back at the event as if we were there ourselves.
Richard Therkorn- Adeptus Sororitas Sisters of Battle
Richard brought a Brigade of nothing but Sisters! The cool thing is that all the new models aren’t even coming out until (rumored) sometime in February of 2020. However, this just shows that Sisters are already in a good spot as he came in 4th place out of the entire tournament. Celestine led the charge with a few other canonesses. A gunline of Exorcists was made to cover the advance of a bunch of Sister squads toward objectives.
For some speed, Seraphim squads were taken bringing melta pistols on the unit to pop armor after deepstriking. And finally, a small wrecking ball force of a Repentia Superior, Preacher, and Repentia loaded into a Rhino for a quick burst of melee damage on the tabletop. Great job!
Kyle Myers- Dark Angels
Going into this Dark Angels-exclusive force, they’re still being played despite not having Doctrine access or an updated book. Kyle brought in a fast, hard-hitting force with Sammael on his hoverbike at the head. Some Land Speeders armed with missile launchers and a few other tank-popping shots skirted around the map with Sammael while Tactical squads and Scout squads sat on objectives and denied any kind of deepstrike.
For some turn one Aggression, two Nephilim Jetfighters armed with las cannons zipped up the board to pop armor and pull fire from the rest of the force while it advanced. And lastly, some Deathwing Knights also dropped into the field and were (hopefully) able to make a successful charge and get some work done.

George Fava- Dark Eldar
There’s a lot going on in this list and that’s because when players don’t spam 9 Flyers, it turns out that Dark Eldar are normally glass cannons. Bringing two Spearheads and a Battalion, this list looked something similar to the earlier days just after Dark Eldar got their codex.
With a majority of the points being dumped into Talos and being chaperoned by a Haemonulus, these units are able to decimate vehicles with Haywire blasters and mulch infantry in combat with chain flails.
For some backfield firepower, Ravagers armed with D-cannons sat back and focus-fired enemy units like Knights and Land Raiders. Venoms were also brought to skirt up the board and drop boots on the ground for capping objectives. That way, the Talos units didn’t have to stop their path of destruction for a turn to sit on a point. Overall, awesome job bringing a blast from the past.
