By Wesley Floyd | April 17th, 2020 | Categories: 40k Flashback, Space Wolves, Warhammer 40k

Space Wolves Space Marine Ragnar hor walSpace Wolves are hot once again thanks to Psychic Awakening. Now that they are back let us take a throwback to their old 2nd edition codex from the 1990s.

We’re blowing the dust off of the old Space Wolves rules from 2nd edition. If you’re a seasoned Space Wolf fan, you might even remember having one of these books from back in the day. For newer fans, you can look back at the old artwork and see how far your faction has come through the years.

Space Wolves 2nd Edition Codex: 40k Throwback!

space wolves flashback codexBAM! This baby can fit so many Space Wolves in it.

Codexes back then were a lot more colorful and were actually softback. This thing is chock full of great fluff, covering the battles on Prospero, the Great Crusade as well as all the way back when Horus chose poorly and fought for Chaos. It also goes into length on the Fortress of the Fang, Bjorn, the Wulfen, Leman Russ, and all the great Wolf Lords.

The book also featured wargear cards like Nite Wing (Njal’s Psyber Eagle) the Wolf Helm, and Frostfang, just to name a few!

space wolves flashback units 1Some older units that can’t be found in the Space Wolf codex were also spotted here. Durfast was a single-wound Marine that had a better BS/WS than most of his weight class.

Interesting side note: GW looks to have recently been pulling old 2nd edition artwork as inspiration for re-inventing 40k characters with new models. We saw this with Mephiston when he came back to the scene as Primaris. Who knows, in the future, we could be seeing Njall come to the table in a pose similar to the one above!

space wolves flashback units 3In the way White Dwarf usually does things, they also gave a written battle report between Space Wolves and Orks.

space wolves flashback units 4Bjorn’s old model also made an appearance with his paint job definitely showing his age by GW’s standards today.

space wolves flashback units 5As for other pages in the book, we’ve got Leman Russ with his Wolves as well as other awesome characters.

space wolves flashback units 7We’ve also got a close-up look at ol’ Logan’s face. Check out that Imperial bling in his right ear. Oh, and for those who don’t know, Terminator armor used to be BUSTED back in the day. You rolled your save 3+ on 2D6…

space wolves flashback units 8To top it all off, there’s a battlefield shot of Space Wolves going up against some old school Nids. That big bug next to Bjorn is a Carnifex, lol. So, so, so many improvements have been made since this 2nd edition Space Wolves Codex.

What’s your favorite 2nd edition codex? Have you been playing Space Wolves through all these years? What was the first faction you ever played?
