It looks like we’ll get a test to see how free rules, in the way of the Tyranids Codex leak, work in terms of increased GW Warhammer model sales.
While most games give out rules for free or have a free rules component, we obviously know that’s not the way GW does things.
With so much of the Tyranids Codex book leaked and so many people quoting it as gospel already, we’ll get to see how things would work if GW went along with how other companies did things. Will this actually increase the model sales or will they fall down? Honestly, it shouldn’t change it much for the Tyranids, but we actually think it will increase them for Warhammer overall…
As people get to see the rules will get more enticed to play the new thing and get in on the fun. If you have to pay $50 for a codex, well, it seems a lot less fun to start the army just in general.
Tyranids Codex Leak Equals Increased GW Sales
We’ve already talked about our reasons why we believe we think they should have free rules, which you can check out here. However, now we get to see what actually happens when a large portion of the fanbase has the rules for free. This will be a great test to see how it all works out.
Who knows? Maybe if GW exceeds their expectations, there’s a chance this becomes the norm (we highly doubt it will, but still…).
Games Workshop always has a number in mind of how much revenue they expect from a given release because they have forcasted it and produced product accordingly. Retailers always know about how well something will do too, so this will give us the numbers to see if giving out the rules for free actually changes the numbers. Either for the better or worse in just a few weeks (or so) we will know for sure from the status of stock levels, and polling retailers worldwide.
There’s a chance this will actually help GW sell more models and we’ll have a good idea of how they did. Plus now that the meta is already sorta starting to form, other unit model kits to potentially combat the new Tyranids are potentially also being bought by players who play other factions as well.
It’s quite an exciting time to talk to retailers about all of this, as Terrivgons, and the Harpy/ Crone kit sold out on day one of the Reddit leak, and others are starting to disappear already like Gargoyles and Warriors.
Why it Might Help
Also keep in mind that instead of spending money on the book, this will free people up to spend more on models, and if you’ve never played the army before, it lets you get all excited about playing them.
Oftentimes buying a codex seems like too much work, so people just don’t buy it and never get enticed into a new army. or as we have seen in the past, the books sell out too.
With having all the rules for free, they then want to play the army, meaning to do so they have to buy minis. Which is what we’ve said all along, give the rules for free, more people will buy the minis. However, this time though we get a test of how real all of this is!
