40k Orks came in first at a major event over the weekend. It looks like their codex definitely skyrocketed them into the competitive scene.
Orks have notoriously been powerful at low-point games, but then drop off as the games get larger. However, it looks like Orks are a constant threat in any sized game. The Renegade Open GT had all of the meta lists that you’d see anywhere, yet Orks still managed to overcome their beatdown and pull off a win!

Three Clans pulled together to pummel the lists that think they could go toe to toe with a WAAAGH! With three Battalions total, let’s break down each one.
Evil Sunz used speed to their advantage. Bringing mostly Shoota Boyz, they were running up the field and hosing enemy units down with enough dakka to make their head spin. With a Weird Boy in the list and a hefty blob of Slugga/Choppa Boyz, we can’t help but think these guys were Da Jumped 9″ away turn one.
Meanwhile, Kommandoes infiltrated areas of the map so the player would have total area control. (Orks are very good at taking up a lot of space for cheap).
Bad Moons Lootas were taken as a part of another cheap Battallion full of Grots. Their Clan Taktik lets them reroll 1’s when shooting and can even spend a stratagem to shoot again. Bad Moons Lootas were able to fling lead like nobody else on the table.
Finally, another cheap Battallion full of Grots was taken just for another handful of CP, and of course their shield potential.
It looks like the best stuff in the codex might have been the older units after all. Not a single vehicle was taken in the list. This player went for body count and bucket-loads of shots. Slugga/Choppa Boyz in your face turn one, as well as four massive squads loaded out with different kinds of dakka, is harder to deal with than people thought.
Great job on the win and paving the way for Orks in the meta!
