RUMORS: New Horus Heresy Plastic Starter Pricing & Value
Games Workshop released this image below on Twitter of the new Horus Heresy Starter Launch Box Set after nearly a year of speculation…
Yes! That’s the new boxed set for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. It includes a whopping 40 Mark VI Space Marines, a plastic Spartan, and more.
So it looks like the Composite image from last year was spot on! Additionally, the glossy nature makes it look like it makes have been taken right off the back of the box, which would explain the reflection in the bottom left.
Also just to note, these are all going to be priced in plastic, with estimated pricing compared to the latest price increases.
- 40 Mark VI Space Marines $220 ($55 for 10)
- 10 Cataphractii Terminators $140 ($70 for 5)
- Contemptor Dreadnought $70 (based on the Redemptor kit)
- Characters $55 (based on the Space Marine Characters pack)
- Spartan $110 (drop from resin based on the Repulsor Executioner price)
- Rulebook and other potential accessories Potentially $40-50 if not offered separately.
Total MSRP: $595 not counting a rulebook and accessories Rumored Box Price: $300-$400
Total Values if it’s the box is priced at:
- $300: $295 in value
- $350: $245 in value
- $400: $195 in value
Whatever the price comes out to be, even at $300 this could really have the value-packed in there. Especially if the price of the Spartan doesn’t drop as we would expect from the switch to plastic. Plus remember we didn’t add any pricing for the rules dice and templates either if that ends up being a separate product offering as well.

The problem or trap if you will with this box is that GW has already made a statement with Ash Wastes being priced at $300. The question is even if this box has value, will hobbyists shell out $300 or more at launch?
In a lot of ways, the pricing and presentation of this box could be the biggest gamble yet by Games Workshop in a post COVID low consumer-confidence market.
If they do price this at say the $200-250 mark, it could really bring new players into the game, especially if the rules are coming updated along with it.

From the looks of it, there may be a pretty aggressive four-month path to market for the new edition of Horus Heresy starting in June of 2022.
But the good news is that if you want it, you should be able to get the new Horus Heresy start set as the rumor is they are making 100,000 copies of the launch box!
