The Leagues of Votann don’t just mine ore—they mine wins, too, if you know how to play them right. With their stoic toughness, high-tech firepower, and some of the best Objective Control in Warhammer 40k, these sturdy squats pack more than just grudge-fueled attitude.

In this guide, we’re cracking open the latest Index rules, covering key changes, unit roles, and tactical plays that actually work on the table. If you’re looking to make your Votann army hit harder, last longer, and stop sitting on shelves collecting dust, you’re in the right place. Let’s get your Kinhost moving—and winning.

New Leagues of Votann 40k Rules

Warhammer Commemorative Series Leagues of Votann The Ancestors WrathThe Leagues of Votann are all about calculated firepower, stubborn grit, and holding grudges—literally. These Kin don’t rush in; they advance with purpose, lay down brutal mid-range shooting, and punish anything foolish enough to get in their way. With a mix of durable units, tech-savvy wargear, and judgment token mechanics that reward target prioritization, the Votann play a slow burn that turns into a blazing wipeout.

That said, their strength lies in synergy and positioning, not flashy movement or overwhelming speed. Mistakes get costly fast, and while they can take a hit, they’re not invincible. Play them like a blunt hammer and you’ll miss the nuance that makes them shine.

Strengths:

  • Punishing ranged firepower with judgment token mechanics
  • Durable units with strong board control
  • Efficient trading and objective holding
  • Unique tech options with powerful buffs

Weaknesses:

  • Limited mobility; not built for fast repositioning
  • Vulnerable if caught out of formation or focus
  • Requires thoughtful sequencing and target selection

If you’re into armies that play smart, hit like a freight train, and make your opponent feel every bad decision they make, the Leagues of Votann might be your perfect grudge match.

Leagues of Votann Codex Army Rule

Votann Army Rule

The Kin don’t rush into a fight—they pick their battles like they’re balancing a ledger. Kâhls and their trusty Theyns size up the field, crunch the numbers, and decide which poor soul is worth turning into scrap. This little calculation trick? It’s called “casting the Eye of the Ancestors”—basically, they judge you, and then they wreck you.

And yeah, it really works. This rule lets them blast high-value targets off the board early, and when they hit, they hit hard.

Leagues of Votann Oathbound Detachment Rules

how to play leaguesLeagues of Votann detachment rule changes.

This is a huge glow-up. You’re not just getting bonus CP early—you’re also starting the game with four enemy units marked with two Judgement tokens each in a 2,000-point match. That means +1 to hit and +1 to wound right out of the gate, which seriously helps smooth out the army’s sometimes meh Ballistic Skill.

Now, about those old detachment rules…

New Leagues of Votann 40k rules 2Old detachment rules.

The Oathband Detachment turns holding a grudge into an art form. With Ruthless Efficiency, you laser-focus on one target, and in return, you get three free CP at the start of the game. That’s not a small edge—it can totally shift the tempo in your favor.

But here’s the twist: you’ve gotta decide who’s worth the wrath. Tagging the enemy’s scariest unit means a bigger payoff if you bring it down, but it’ll take more firepower—and time. Go after something softer, and you rack up CP faster. It’s all about choosing the right kind of petty.

Stratagems

New Leagues of Votann 40k rules 6 warhammer 40k votann 10th edition

Judgement tokens aren’t just there to make your Hit and Wound rolls better—they’re also fuel for some seriously spicy Oathband Stratagems. If an enemy has the nerve to shoot at your allies, that’s bad enough. But if they decide to take a shot at you? Yeah… the Kin have a little something called Reactive Reprisal for that, and let’s just say it’s not a polite conversation.

Since you need a Judgement Token on the target to pop it off, you’re already getting bonuses to hit—and maybe to wound too—which means this strat can absolutely ruin someone’s day if they poke the wrong bear.

Void Armour is also a big stratagem, but with a recent NERF, it hasn’t been quite as strong.

New Leagues of Votann 40k rules 3

Hearthkyn Warriors are like a walking Votann unit toolbox—loaded with options and ready to mess with whatever’s giving you trouble. Sharp-eyed Kâhls will spot the HYLas rotary cannon now in the mix, snagged right off the sprue from Kill Team: Gallowfall. More dakka, more fun.

These days, it feels like every army’s basic troops can grab an objective and keep moving, forcing your opponent to come knock them off it. Hearthkyn take that and crank it up: tons of tasty wargear combos, a buffet of weapon choices, and a beefy Toughness 5 to keep them standing.

The Autoch-pattern bolter pumps out two shots but skips rapid fire, while the EtaCarn plasma beamer is showing off the first D3 sustained hits—yep, roll a 6 to hit and you might get three bonus shots. Spicy.

New Leagues of Votann 40k rules 4

The Land Fortress is basically a brick with guns—think Land Raider-level tough but with way more grudge behind it. It rolls in, drops off your Kin, and sticks around to ruin tanks and heavy hitters with its big, mean friend: the heavy magna-rail cannon.

At Toughness 12, rocking a 2+ save and 16 Wounds, it’s definitely chunky. But no invulnerability means it’s not invincible, and with the kind of absurd weapons floating around these days, it might not be parked on the board as long as you’d like.

Weapon-wise, the Cyclic ion cannon is no slouch, kicking out around six shots on average. But the real menace is the heavy magna-rail cannon—Strength 18, -4 AP, and a casual nine average damage (with a ceiling of 12). Yeah, it slaps. Add in a bunch of shots, solid support rules, and the ability to buff its passengers, and this thing’s doing a lot more than just sitting pretty.

Why Play Leagues of Votann?

Leagues of Votann YaegirsGrudges, Firepower, and Unshakable Resolve, oh yeah, and Cthonian Beserks going wild!

The Kin don’t rush—they advance with purpose. This army isn’t about flashy moves or reckless charges. It’s about choosing the right target, hitting it really hard, and daring anyone else to step up. With solid mid-board presence and brutal ranged weapons, the Leagues of Votann excel at board control and punishing anything that pokes the grudge-bear. But don’t think they are slow, they have units like the Hernkyn Pioneers and plenty of transports!

And the best part? The longer the fight goes, the more efficient they get. Thanks to Judgement Tokens, your shots get deadlier the more annoyed your army gets—basically, every action your opponent takes could just dig them deeper.

Brutal, Efficient Weaponry

Leagues of Votann kill teamTrans Hyperian Alliance paint scheme.

Plasma beams. Rotary cannons. Railguns that ignore invulnerables and casually delete units. Votann don’t mess around.

Their arsenal is all about delivering reliable, high-impact firepower from mid to long range—and the more Judgement stacked on the target, the more those guns overperform.

Hearthkyn squads bring a buffet of weapons. Thunderkyn bring the pain. And the Hekaton Land Fortress? Yeah, it will ruin someone’s day.

If you’re into armies that reward positioning and target prioritization, this one’s got your name etched into a Kin data-slate.

Savage Stratagems and Tactical Synergy

Boarding Patrol Leagues of VotannThe Leagues aren’t flashy, but they’re far from boring. Their stratagems are all about timing and efficiency:

Reactive Reprisal – Someone shoots you? Cool, now they get shot back—with bonuses.
Ancestral Sentence – Double down on grudge-marked enemies with even more accurate shooting.
Grim Legacy – Make sure that even in death, your Kin take someone with them.

These tricks don’t just look cool—they matter. Every strat works hand-in-hand with Judgement mechanics to make sure your target doesn’t just die… they get absolutely overkilled.

Don’t forget your Einhyr Hearthguard either! With deep strike they can go anywhere you need them and destroy enemy units and capture those key objectives.

What You Need to Know: Index Rules and Army Identity

Leagues of Votann KâhlWith the new Index rules (and a decent change from 9th Edition), the Leagues of Votann are finding their groove as the ultimate “don’t-mess-with-us” army. Are they fast? No. Are they flashy? Definitely not.

But if you want an army that turns math into murder, rewards smart play, and makes your opponent regret their deployment, welcome to the grudge match.

Just don’t expect mercy. The Kin sure don’t.

Do Leagues of Votann Have Transports?

leagues of votann all modelsAbsolutely! The Leagues of Votann don’t just roll into battle on foot—they bring their own sweet rides!

They’ve got two beefy transports in their roster: the Hekaton Land Fortress, which is like the Warhammer equivalent of showing up in a tank on steroids, and the Sagitaur, a sleek, fast vehicle perfect for when you need to get your squad somewhere fast and look good doing it.

So yeah, the Votann aren’t walking if they don’t have to—they’ve got the heavy-duty wheels to get the job done in style! The Hekaton carries more troops and brings some wild firepower, but the Sagitaur lets you break units up and zip around the board.

Hekaton Land Fortress

Hekaton Land Fortress warhammer 40k votann 10th editionThe Hekaton Land Fortress is the Leagues of Votann’s ultimate blend of battle tank and armored transport, commanding both fear and respect on the battlefield. This bad boy is packing an array of heavy weapons, like the heavy magna-rail cannon that delivers a devastating punch at 30″ with an eye-popping 18 Strength and up to D6+6 damage.

If that’s not enough firepower for you, it also comes with blast weapons like the cyclic ion cannon and Hekaton warhead, so the Hekaton’s arsenal isn’t just big—it’s versatile.

Now, onto its more practical feature: its transport capacity. This beast can carry 12 Leagues of Votann Infantry into battle, and if your squad’s rocking Exo-armour, they’ll take up two slots each. Exo-frame models?

Those hefty guys will need three. So, whether it’s bringing your troops into the fight or acting as a mobile fortress, the Hekaton Land Fortress is a rolling wall of guns and armor, but it lacks an innate Invulnerable save and can be the victim of mortal wounds.

And don’t forget—thanks to its Fire Support ability, anyone hopping out after a ride gets a little help taking down targets the Fortress has already hit, allowing for re-rolls on Wound rolls. It’s basically a party bus with guns.

Sagitaur

Sagitaur warhammer 40k votann 10th edition

The Sagitaur is the ultimate rugged ATV for the Leagues of Votann—perfect for scouting missions, swift strikes, and surviving whatever nasty alien threats the galaxy throws its way. Despite being relatively compact, this thing packs a surprising punch, capable of taking on enemy battle tanks with ease thanks to weapons like the HYLas beam cannon or the Sagitaur missile launcher (which can dish out some serious pain with 12 Strength at 36″ range).

When it comes to transport duties, the Sagitaur is built for speed and efficiency. It can carry up to 6 Leagues of Votann Infantry, making it great for quick expeditionary teams. However, no room for the big boys in Exo-armour or Exo-frames—they’ll have to find another ride. But here’s where it gets cool: you can split a Hearthkyn Warriors unit into two 5-man squads at the start of a battle, one hopping in the Sagitaur and the other in another transport or deployed separately.

With its Blistering Advance ability, the Sagitaur lets your squad disembark even after it has Advanced, giving you the flexibility to keep moving while still acting like a regular squad—just no charging that turn. Perfect for keeping the fight mobile and dynamic, it’s a tough, multi-tasking little beast!
