A new Vanguard Start Collecting type box, that is more in line with the 40k Combat Patrol sets, is here for the Maggotkin in Age of Sigmar
The Maggotkin of Nurgle was confirmed to get their own battletome update for AoS 3.0 during the last Warhammer Online Preview. Now it looks like that is not all they are getting as a new style of Start Collecting Combat Patrol type box dubbed ‘Vanguard’ is coming for the Maggotkin in Age of Sigmar!
Now we know the pricing, and as we suspected, it is less than a 40k Combat Patrol, but more than the Start Collecting box sets.
Let’s quickly rehash what we know so far then break down the new image and what it might mean.
New AoS Maggotkin of Nurgle
The Maggotkin of Nurgle are receiving the first non-Dominion battletome book for Age of Sigmar as it’s been 3 years since they received a battletome, so it feels about the right time for them to finally get an update.
We’ve also seen some Rumor Engines that hint toward some Nurgle-looking hints. So, if you play them, be on the lookout for those bits in the new previews below!
Rotbringer Sorcerer
This sorcerer, an amalgam of human and fly, is a truly unsettling masterpiece of Nurgle’s dubious generosity. It’s also a brilliant update of a classic model, and it fits in perfectly with the existing Nurgle range.
First and foremost, A brand new model comes to help out Nurgle’s forces in the Mortal Realms. Perhaps the Rotbringer Sorcerer will act like the AoS version of the Malignant Plaguecaster from 40k?
Luckily as it turns out, the new Battletome is right around the corner, which probably means the rest of those new battletome rumors for AoS were true as well because this listed this as first out of the gate for 3.0.
Maggotkin of Nurgle Battletome
Mark your calendars for December, when we expect the new battletome to arrive – just in time for Grandfather Nurgle to spread his sickening gifts to the world. Keep a single, rheumy eye peeled for more news about the Maggotkin, and we’ll keep you informed.
December is very close! Nurgle’s followers are so close to the finish line, as they’ve now been waiting multiple years for their update!
Facing off against an army dedicated to Nurgle should be daunting, and now it feels that way. The various plagues and contagions have more impact, and the troops are just as hard to put down. Even more so if you bring along their most powerful daemon, the so-called Loci of Fecundity.
During the stream they hinted at pumping our mortal wounds if you get diseased by a Nurgle unit, even after they die, they will continue to chip away.
Now let’s take a look at this new Aos Maggotkin Vanguard Combat Patrol style box that has been revealed!
New AoS Maggotkin Vanguard Combat Patrol Box Revealed!
Revealed by Warhammer Community, this new Start Collecting Combat Patrol type box dubbed Vanguard is coming for the Maggotkin in Age of Sigmar!
The Grandfather is always waiting, because in the end, all things return to him, including articles about stunning boxed sets. Not wanting to miss out, he has unleashed a festering canker-sore into our world, in the form of Vanguard: Maggotkin of Nurgle, a complete starter army in a box much like Warhammer 40,000’s Combat Patrols.
We had already seen a teaser image of this new set (above), and it brought up some interesting questions about the pricing and value of the new Maggotkin Vanguard box as well. We suspected the pricing for it would be somewhere between a Start Collecting box, and one of the 40k combat patrol box sets based on the value inside.

Listed in the burgundy price group, the new Vanguard box looks to retail for $125 with other regions’ pricing also listed as well.
So breaking down the value of the contents of the box we now have:

MSRP: $192
Savings with Vanguard Box: $67
That savings puts the new Vanguard box value in a similar range to the 40k Combat Patrol boxes (check out all their breakdowns here)

Another thing to note if we compare this to the current Start Collecting for Maggotkin which is still currently available on Games Workshop’s site as well as Amazon…
The only difference is the addition of 10 Plague Bearers and the Spoilpox Scrivener replaced the Lord of blights, which isn’t a huge difference. It is however nice to see Daemons get added to a bundle for new Maggotkin players so they get a better idea of the full range without having to buy into it all.
Perhaps best of all is the fact that we will probably see the first of the new Age of Sigmar Vanguard box sets starting with the Maggotkin very soon. With this being in the 2021 holiday gift guide, we would expect the see this hit pre-order for an early December release (fingers crossed).
