New 40k Core Rulebook & Rules Changes on the Way

buttscribe 40k datacards space marine rulesAccording to these rumors, big Warhammer 40k Core Rulebook changes are ready for print and on the way- check out rules that may be changing!

Before we go further, these are rumors, so… That means take them with as much salt as needed.

So with that in mind, the new changes will bring some things back from 3rd edition and really seem to move along the Space Marine Chapters.

They haven’t confirmed a date yet but did say it is ready to print, but that could still be a long way off theoretically. Let’s check out the rumors from Faeit.

RUMORS: New 40k Core Rulebook & Rules Changes on the Way

chaos rumors new wal hor warhammer games workshop

First up is the possible fact that a new Warhammer 40k core rulebook is done, we seem so far behind on the timeline of releases, we’re not sure how could even be released with delays to codex books, etc.  Perhaps with a FAQ for any codex books that come sooner or later than the new Warhammer 40k core rules themselves be a good stop-gap.

Still, it could be strange to have all the Chapter Approved, supplements, and then a new book tying it all together. We’ll just have to see how that all plays out, as it is not in theory “undoable”

Now, here are the changes that are supposedly coming:

  • All Space Marine Chapters are being redone along with Chaos Space Marines (makes sense since they are getting a new book soon anyway).
  • Dreadnoughts seem like they will be more powerful than ever (described as monstrous creatures and Terminators are 2 wounds.
  • Night Fighting rules will be coming back and have a major effect, like 3rd edition rules, maybe half range.
  • The Psychic Phase is being removed and rolled into other phases. This could really either really speed the game up or slow it down depending on how it’s done. Not exactly sure how it will be rolled in yet.
  • Big weapon reworks are coming and multiple profiles will be updated to make them on par with AP blast weapons.
  • Vehicle explosions will deal more damage than now. this makes taking a ton of vehicles in your lines more dangerous than ever, sorry Guard players.
  • Vehicles will still be able to split fire, but will only be able to target infantry with a larger portion of weapons.
  • Charging from deep strike and outflank will be allowed in more situations, not just specific units.

As we said, these are new core book rumors so we’ll have to wait and see what if any of these come true!

All The Chapter Approved 2022 40k Rules, Missions & Points

all-the-warhammer-40k-updatesHere are all the new Chapter approved Warhammer 40k rules updates, points changes, missions, and Secondary Objectives in the CA GT 2022 book.

We originally saw some of the new changes to Warhammer 40k missions and secondary objectives updates at the US Open Finals. Since then we’ve seen rules and points leaks, a new Chapter Approved GT 2022 book, changes to secondaries, and the introduction of seasons for Warhammer 40k.

So that will be a big change to how new and existing Warhammer 40k rules are balanced and how many updates you will have to keep up with as a player.

Chapter-Approved-40k-wal-hor

Keep in mind before July of 2020 the rules updates in the Chapter Approved book were published in December of each year, so technically hobbyists already bought TWO Chapter Approved books within six months of each other from Dec 2019 to July 2020. Now, that will be the norm.

Chapter Approved War Zone Nachmund Grand Tournament Pack and Munitorum Field Manual 2022

It looks as if they are abandoning the old style of one Chapter Approved book and going to two Warhammer rules update releases per year. So we thought the next one we would see would be summer, now it looks like the beginning and middle of every year will see the packs.

The good news is if you’ve been waiting for some of those big updates like new missions, points changes, and more- they’re all in Chapter Approved 2022!

Along with the campaign book, there will be a new Crusade mission pack, featuring 24 new missions, extra Requisitions, Agendas and Battle Traits, and a War of Faith campaign system that sees your army casting down false idols and their worshippers for greater rewards from your own deities.

All The Chapter Approved 2022 40k Rules, Missions & Points

It looks like there will be no Subfaction soup anymore, so a change like this, will really impact how Warhammer 40k armies are built going forward.

There is one new benefit though that can net you more command points, you’ll have to take a super heavy.

New Be'lakor 40kWarhammer Community unveiled a few changes to how your armies will be built. We saw some rumors about this, but now it is confirmed.

The biggest change to list building are selectable sub-faction keywords such as <Chapter>. Originally these were picked on a unit-by-unit basis, so squads and Detachments could come from different subfactions. This selection is now made when you start to build your list, and the sub-faction you choose now replaces every example of that keyword – meaning your whole army now has to come from the same grouping.

Super-heavy Auxiliary Detachments also encourage a unified army, as they can offer a Command Benefit of +2 Command Points if the Lord of War choice shares a faction with your Warlord (other than Chaos, Imperium, Aeldari, Ynnari, or Tyranids).

Let’s take a look at the new Keyrods rule from Chapter Approved 2022 for Warhammer 40k:

GW Changes How To Build Warhammer 40k Armies & Keywords Chapter Approved 2022

Here’s a closer look at the exact text that spans both columns:

GW Changes How To Build Warhammer 40k Armies & Keywords Chapter Approved 2022

So a slight expectation for Knights Renegades, and a little love for Super-Heavy detachments. However, the new Army-wide Keywords rule for some players will be a little far-reaching as there will be no more mixing of subfactions anymore!

Picking Missions

16 steps to play 2We also covered all the new missions, so obviously, that section is going to be totally different than before. For most friendly games, people just agree on a mission that seems fun, but if you want, they also have a D33 system to get your missions picked. Next, the winner of the dice roll determines who is the attacker and who is the defender, then the defender selects their deployment zone.

Secondary Objectives & Deployment

16 steps to play 3Then you secretly select three secondary objectives and once both players have selected them, you reveal them to one another. One of the big things here is you have to get your reinforcements on the table by the end of turn 3 or they count as destroyed. So don’t forget about them either

Next, when deploying, the defender goes first. However, if you have a model that cannot fully fit in your deployment zone it starts on the edge of the table and cannot do anything in the first turn.

Playing Warhammer 40k

16 steps to play 4To determine the first turn, players just roll-off, with no benefits to either side. Then who wins the roll takes the first turn no matter what. The battle doesn’t end when you have no models, so if there is only a turn left and you’re way up on VPs, but your army gets destroyed, you can still technically win. Lastly, the most points you can score is 90 (45+45 with 15 from each of 3 secondary objectives max), and whoever has more points wins.

It also looks like they are still giving the 10 VPs for a painted army, so technically you can score 100 points.

Chapter Approved Missions Fortifications Changes

Deploy Armies

The last major change comes to Fortifications. These structures have previously chafed against mission deployment, so a new rule has been put in place for players who want to bring their buildings and barricades to the table, which should make deployment easier.

A few changes to how Fortifications will work are also here. This is interesting as you can remove a terrain piece, so you can take a side that maybe has a piece you don’t want, then just throw down your fortification in its place!

All the New Warhammer 40k Chapter Approved Missions

These two new missions as seen at the US Open Finals only have primary objectives listed as the secondary ones were provided via a set of cards at the event (much like you can get a set in the White Dwarf 472).

So from the US Open finals, the games used two missions from the Chapter Approved 2022 Grand Tournament Missions Pack – Secure Missing Artefacts and Recover the Relics both below.

Mission One:

Terrain Set-Ups & Explanation of Types:

Terrain Setup 1 chapter approved 2022 GT Mission pack

Terrain Setup 2 Terrain Setup 1 chapter approved 2022 GT Mission pack

Terrain Piece 1 elements will almost always be “true” line-of-sight blocking pieces (i.e. obstructed windows, solid walls, few lines of sight drawable through the physical terrain pieces themselves).

For Terrain Piece 2 elements, the opposite is true – the physical terrain elements are themselves quite porous, so while Obscuring makes the entire piece line-of-sight blocking, this benefit largely dissipates once your units enter the terrain.

Nerf Halo MA40 pricing and avialabilityThe Best NERF Guns To Buy: Pricing & Availability

For Terrain Piece 3 elements, the terrain will be fairly broken up, reflecting their Dense Cover rules.

terrain explanation chapter approved 2022

They also added an interesting note on objective placement for terrain:

A Note on Objective Placement: For the US Open events, following the guideline of the Grand Tournament Mission Pack 2021, no Objectives may be placed on any of the physical terrain elements. However, there is an “otherwise noted” caveat that they may end up on top of the area-terrain bases for some elements in certain missions. Where this occurs, it has been considered in the overall terrain layout and selection of mission/deployment according to layout.

Mission 3

Tear Dwon the Icons

Tear Down the Icons 2In this mission, you really want to get into your enemy’s zone and blow up your explosives! The more explosives you can have in your opponent’s zone, you’ll rack up the points at the end.

Mission 4

Data Scry

Data Scry 2This has a cool mechanic that you actually can control objective markers even if you aren’t in range with a unit. Obviously, it can still be taken by the enemy, but just very interesting for fast armies.

Mission 5

Abandonded Sanctuaries

Abandonded Sanctuaries 2This mission is all about taking the center of the table and destroying your opponent there!

Mission 6

conversion

conversion 2A lot of the new missions are focused on getting objectives in the other player’s zone. Then, you only get CP if your Warlord is on the table, don’t let them die!

Mission 7

The Scouring

the Scouring 2Scanning objectives is nothing new, so this feels like a fairly standard mission.

Mission 8

Tide of Conviction

Tide of ConvictionThis is another mission all about getting into your opponent’s zone and taking the objectives away from them! Just remember though, you only get CP if you control an objective in your own zone.

Mission 9

Death and Zeal

Death and Zeal 2This one is all about destroying your enemy and grabbing as many objective markers as you can!

All the New 40k Grand Tournament 2022 Secondary Objectives Cards

So here are all the secondary objective cards together with the six new faction ones from Chapter Approved 2022 Warzone Nachmund book that were spotted in White Dwarf 472 on Imgur.

new-seconday-objectives-40k-gt-2022-mission-pack changes 4

So it looks like there is no more taking all the Space Marine secondary objectives, you must take two from the ones below, with further keyword restrictions as noted above!

No Mercy, No Respite:

new-seconday-objectives-40k-gt-2022-mission-pack changes 7

  • To the Last- No changes.
  • Grind Them Down – No changes.
  • No Prisoners – This is still all about non-Vehicle and non-Character models. The main change is that you get an additional VP for doing 50-99 wounds and 2 extra VPs for doing over 100 wounds of enemy units.

new-seconday-objectives-40k-gt-2022-mission-pack changes 5

The Daemon one is interesting because if you can destroy units, or get big mobs to flee, you’ll be getting those 4 points without too much trouble. But against small units with high leadership, this will be basically impossible to score a lot.

The CSM one lines up with what you want to do anyway, get the objectives!

Battlefield Supremacy:

new-seconday-objectives-40k-gt-2022-mission-pack changes 2

  • Stranglehold – No changes from the most recent update in 2021.
  • Behind Enemy Lines – No changes from the most recent update in 2021.
  • Engage on All Fronts – You still score the 2 VPs at the end of the turn but you must have at least 3 models, be a vehicle, or a monster to get the points.
  • Yield No Ground – (Faction Imperial Knights) as pictured above.

Purge the Enemy:

new-seconday-objectives-40k-gt-2022-mission-pack changes 8

  • Assassination – No changes from the most recent update. This was also confirmed today by GW
  • Titanslayer – No changes from the most recent update.
  • Bring it Down – Some big changes are coming with this one as the thresholds are changing for VPs. Here’s the new breakdown for points: 1 VP for each enemy VEHICLE or MONSTER killed with 9 or fewer wounds, 2 VP for each enemy VEHICLE/MONSTER with 10-14 wounds, and 3 VP for each one with 15+ wounds. This makes a big difference because it pushes things like Rhinos and Raiders to 2 VP, and instead of taking 20+ wounds to get those 3 points, you get them for 15+. While it might not make the biggest deal for a lot of armies, others will be super impacted.
  • For the Emperor! – Faction Specific Imperial Guard objective that is super spicy points for doing something you’re probably going to do anyway! This was also confirmed today by GW.

Shadow Operations:

  • Raise the Banners High – No changes.
  • Deploy Teleport Homers – This now completes at the end of your turn as long as they are Troops.
  • Retrieve Nachmund Data – This replaces Retrieve Octarius Data as it seems GW just can’t decide on a name that will stick for this one. This can now be attempted by one Infantry or Biker unit (Which gives more flexibility as now characters and bikers are included) per turn if they are more than 6″ from another table quarter. At the end of your turn, you roll a D6, subtracting 1 if the unit performing the action is a Troops choice. If you roll less than or equal to the number of models in the unit, the action is completed. You score 4, 8, and 12 points for completing the action 2, 3, and 4 times, respectively. This seems like a good change because characters can try the action if you don’t have the Troops left to do it, but them actually pulling it off is pretty hard but still possible.
  • Investigate Signal – The main change here is that you can still attempt this even if enemy units are within 6″ of the center. however, you only complete it at the end of your turn if there are no enemy units still within 6″ of the center of the battlefield. Meaning you have to be pretty sure you’ll blow them away before the turn is over, or you’ll waste the action.

Warpcraft

new-seconday-objectives-40k-gt-2022-mission-pack changes 1

(Basically no changes)

  • Abhor the Witch – No changes from the most recent update in 2021.
  • Psychic Interrogation – No longer requires line of sight to the target.
  • Pierce the Veil –No changes from the most recent update in 2021.
  • Warp Ritual – No changes from the most recent update in 2021.

Chapter Approved Grand Tournament 2022 Points Changes

With the first season starting soon GW has revealed their top picks of the 40k Chapter Approved Points Changes.

They broke these down into four sections, with each one having a lot of point changes. Three of the sections are all point deductions, with only a single panel of points increases.

Points Changes

Whether you’re a fan of trundling tanks or agile aircraft, points are going down. The Balance Dataslate may limit the number of Flyers units you can include, but they’ll all now take up a smaller chunk of your army. And if you love tanks, crawlers, walkers, half-tracks, bikes, or buggies, it’s easier than ever to bring a few more Gladiators or Leman Russ Battle Tanks to the table.

It looks like they want some of the less used vehicles to see more play, which we’re totally fine with! We’ll have to see if these changes are enough to push them into the meta.

Necron Changes

Necrons Points Changes

Necrons were one of the biggest winners in the latest Balance Dataslate. The Crypteks worked hard to upgrade a whole bunch of units with the shiny [core] keyword, resulting in more tactical options for your Overlord. Now they’ve also figured out the alarm clock settings for their tomb worlds, which means more mechanical horrors waking up in time to hit the table.

It’s a good day for Necrons as they not only grabbed all these drops but also the ones above as well. With this many changes, we’ll have to see how much more you’ll be able to fit into your lists.

Space Marine Changes

Space Marines Point Changes

Costs are creeping down on iconic units for some of the most recognisable Space Marine Chapters – particularly Blood Angels Death Company squads, Ravenwing Dark Talons, Thunderwolf Cavalry, and the Corvus Blackstar.

patreon-not-gw-items-Free-gift-sm1Click Here To Get Your Free Gift & Miniatures Crate

We expect there will be more changes than this, but it looks like they are trying to focus on the big chapters. Again, just a couple of changes may not make a huge difference, but getting that one or two extra minis might make all the difference.

40k Chapter Approved Points Increases

points changes 2

Part of the ebb and flow of Warhammer 40,000 is that units have ups and downs. Everyone loves to play with their favourite, fightiest toys, but some are a little overtuned at present. Points increases for a handful of units should see them maintain their power – but give others a chance to torment tables.

Orks are getting hit pretty hard this time around on their most useful units, which you can see below.

Orks 40k Points Changes in Chapter Approved 2022

Let’s check out the 40k Orks Points changes for Chapter Approved 2022 first since we’re here.  These make sense as the overperforming units are getting NERFs and some of the underperforming ones are grabbing buffs.

There are a couple that sting, but that’s just how it goes sometimes.

  • Beastboss on Squigosaur +30 (+21%)
  • Kommandos + 2 (+20%)
  • Meganobs -5 (-14%)
  • Scrapjets +10 (+11%)
  • Squigbuggy +20 (+22%)
  • Battlewagon -15 (-13%)
  • Bonebreaka (-9%)
  • Gunwagon (-9%)
  • Kannonwagon (FW) -20 (-12%)
  • Kill rig +20 (+11%)
  • Killa Kans -5 (-13%)
  • Lootas -2 (-12%)
  • Mek gunz -5 for all versions except mega kannon (-11%)

The Kill Rig was performing pretty well, so that makes sense to get an increase. The Beastboss on Squigosuar was also super powerful, but a 21% increase is pretty big honestly if true. We’ll have to see how that really affects lists in the long run.

Kommandos going up two points a model might be the one that hurts the most honestly. They are good at a lot of things and this just makes the unit so much more expensive.

Then for reductions, the Mek Gunz and Meganobs going down is a bit of a surprise, but not an unwanted one! If you play a Kill Kan heavy list, you probably are loving that change. There are a lot of reductions overall, so hopefully, it gives more variety to Orks Army lists moving forward!

Adeptus Custodes Chapter Approved 40k Points Changes

So the new Blade Champion looks like a fantastic option for his points and his raw melee power. He’s basically only 5 points more than a Shield-Captain now once you give them a shield. Trajann going down 10 points is huge, considering he lost a large chunk of his survivability. Still, we’ll have to see if he is worth the points while losing some of his perks.

3dartguy ruler cropClick Here To Get The New Sci-Fi Ruler Miniature!

Additionally, while a lot of popular units didn’t go up or down by much, Custodes getting access to super cheap Sister of Silence models without breaking battle forged is huge, since it lets you spam more of the best units, and have to waste less point on filling obligatory detachment slots with expensive Custodes. Plus it makes performing actions a tad more efficient.

Custodes Points 2We were hoping they would put the Agamatus points down, but at least they didn’t go up. The Orion and Ares both went down 50 points each, so we might see more of them on the tabletop.

Lastly, it also looks like the Telemon went down 20 points, so pretty surprising and decent there. There are some increases and drops, but nothing too insane overall for Forge World stuff.

Adeptus Custodes Codex Points Changes

  • Blade Champion +10

  • Shield Captain -5

  • Allarus Captain -10

  • Valerian -10

  • Allarus Terminators -5 per model

  • Vertus Bikes -5 per model

  • Land Raider -20

  • Trajann -10

  • Bike Captain -10

Forge World Adeptus Custodes Points Changes

  • Telemon -20
  • Aquilon Terminators -5 ppm

  • Orion & Ares -50
  • Coronus Grav-carrier -30

Misericordia’s for free on everyone except Sagittarum Guard.

  • Tyrannofex 170-155 -15

Forge World

Not covering it all, but the highlights are

  • Relic Contemptor Dread, same points but the twin volkite now costs 15 instead of 5
  • For Imperial Knights, the Questoris Knights Magaera goes up to 500 points from 480. I didn’t know that was the model that was causing problems, but fair enough.
  • Both of the Drukhari Lords of War take drops, the Tantalus going down to 280 from 310.
  • Most of the Orks go down in points by quite a lot, including the Squiggoth and gargantuan Squiggoth.
  • Much sadness for the Tau as no point changes, poor manta.
  • And finally, the army using all the Forge World, the Tyranids with the Dimachaeron going from 255 to 280.

One of the biggest changes may be to Contemptor Dreadnoughts armed with Volkite Culverins that went up 20 points total! This is a big deal just based on the fact of how many people take this combo in their lists lately.  It feels like almost every marine player runs these!

Overall it looks like Orks got the most of NERF bat, and the Necrons probably benefited the most

Updates in general for any game are just good business. That being said it also seems like in 2022 GW will have their hands full trying to monetize these updates while getting hobbyists to adopt their new DLC style pay-to-play path to market without a reliable digital delivery option or platform.

Here’s all the latest on the upcoming rules updates and points changes for Warhammer 40k.
