Is the Death Guard Combat Patrol Worth It?

If you actually need what’s in the box, this one’s a pretty painless way to get a playable core fast. You’re getting a couple of real characters, some chunky elite bodies, and a Rhino, which is a big deal because Death Guard love nothing more than getting to the mid-board without spending two turns doing the slow plague waddle.

But if you already own the key bits, especially if you’ve got spare transports and a pile of plague infantry sitting half-built in a drawer, you’ll get more mileage out of buying only the kits you’re missing.

The Death Guard Combat Patrol rules have a predictable vibe: methodical pressure, durable units, and grinding people down once you get into the messy part of the table. It’s not reinventing the faction, but it absolutely plays to their strengths.

What Can You Play Out of the Box? (Combat Patrol Rules vs 40k Points)

Combat Patrol has its own format, so points are not the main event. If you’re sliding this into a standard 40k game, the Death Guard Combat patrol points usually land somewhere in the 450-ish point neighborhood, depending on current updates and how you kit things out.

What to Buy After the Death Guard Combat Patrol

Poxwrought Vector Battleforce box

This Combat Patrol box gives you a good core, but you’re still short on big guns. Adding tanks or heavier support next is the obvious move if you want this list to start pulling real weight.

So, while this box is a great starting point, it is only 450ish points, meaning you’ll still have the vast majority of your army to collectBut keep in mind, if you can find the Poxwrought Vector Battleforce, that would be worth it as well!

2021 Combat Patrol Contents (Out of Print)

dg combat patrol

The older version of the Combat Patrol dropped back in January 2021 and went all in on Poxwalkers. Thirty of them, to be exact, which was great if you wanted zombies and less great if you already had a pile of them.

The box included Typhus (your funky hive-boss), a Biologus Putrifier, and a modest 7 Plague Marines, decent value if you’re starting from scratch, but a bit of a facepalm if you already owned Typhus and a truckload of zombies.

At a $168 price tag and an MSRP value of $251, it gave you about $83 in savings, assuming you actually needed that many Poxwalkers.

Models Unit Name Value
30 Poxwalkers $111 ($37 for a box of ten this week)
7 Plague Marines $60
1 Typhus  $45
1 Biologus Putrifier $35
 Death Guard Combat Patrol
  Total MSRP: $251
  Savings Versus Box Price: $83

Final Thoughts on the New Combat Patrol Box

dg Lord of Virulence

Between the Terminators, Plague Marines, and a Rhino to haul them around, this Death Guard Combat Patrol feels focused. It gives you models you’ll actually use, not just a box of bodies to paint and forget.

It’s got value, it’s got attitude, and it’s got enough Nurgle stink to keep your opponents six feet away.

Bottom line? If you’re eyeing a Death Guard army, this is one heck of a power-up.

Sorry for the confusion we deal in retail MSRP only. Not secondary market prices that fluxatued wildly based on games workshop production, and whatever is hot in the meta.
